Great video. I am currently about to do a patio in my back garden. I have a slope coming from garden towards my driveway. Doesn't run down to my house. Would I level off the slope at the bottom with type 1 or just add more mortar mix as I go down the slope? I am leaning towards laying more type 1 and leveling it up a little. Also what is best ratio for mortar mix as I've seen mixed ratios
@tidybrickslandscaping
@tidybrickslandscaping 3 жыл бұрын
Hi john thanks for watching and it sounds like it needs tweaking a bit so best problem solver is stone dust as we say down here basically 10mm to dust easy to move great for levelling just needs compaction with a sprinkle of water so it compacts 4/1 sharp sand mix 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

I noticed you have a step down to the garden area. I am disabled (one leg and a blind brother) and I need a flattish patio area laid and have tried three times to get the fall away from the shed which is north but the real fall of the garden is east to west. I am now going to dig out all the sand that we tried to lay the slabs onto and put in a proper sub base, but I still don't know how to work the fall out coming from the shed to the north to meet up with the grass to the south when the fall is left to right, not top to bottom as the path, which is north to south in drop, has been laid. If you understand what I mean. Everyone I have asked does not want to know because they don't want to deal with a half assed job that was not finished properly the first time around.
@paulf2529
@paulf2529 3 жыл бұрын
Take up everything then either remove sub base or add sub-base to get your levels and falls correct. Worth hiring a laser level to work out your falls etc and get everything set out properly.
@LisaSargent03
@LisaSargent03 3 жыл бұрын
@@paulf2529 How far down do I have to go for the patio? The old footpath is still there, so I can just go over the top of that like the guy did before, but the patio is the problem as it needs to meet the fall in the path and meet the lowest part of the grass.

@tidybrickslandscaping

Tough call I hate riven slabs they’re cheap as to get a perfect finish that’s pretty much impossible the only thing I could say would be if you had a 600 x 600 for instance one end was lumpy and the other end was shallow put the lumpy end at the top regarding levels 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Great work as usual tidy👍 Just wana ask a few questions if that’s ok. I just can’t make my mind up on which patio I i want as it’s going to be close to 95sqm I am worried about the product. Does having your porcelain from Marshall’s really matter as it seems double the price? Im thinking in my head the old saying you in the trade is you pay for what you get and I don’t want to skimp and get the wrong product. Apologies for the questions but I’ve also seen another one of your videos as I watch them all! But the Marshall’s symphony classic grey looks really similar to this one being laid which is the Marshall’s arrento silver just wana know what’s the difference as they really do look the same and vary in price? Thanks again Sean
@tidybrickslandscaping
@tidybrickslandscaping 3 жыл бұрын
Good point Sean a lot of them do look similar and can vary in price this does come down too the arrento don’t give you the primer or grout so it’s cheap that’s that reason I believe I did query the other day about something similar to check. The only product that sticks out in my mind is the natural stone called towngate £30 it’s exactly the same look as the versuro £60 for half the price. I have used other companies products that are cheaper but they chip much easier as they are only cooked for half the time Marshalls cook their products for and there lies your strength in the tile. Check out London stone they have some great porcelain products Hope this helps Sean good luck mate 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Also it's not that easy to use just a level on a big floor like this if you don't know what you doing ,your straight edge should be atleast 3m long so you can get proper lenght ,because if you use a level like in this video it only covers a certain length but when you reach the lenght of the end of the level to where it can reach the tile and you continue on you should have something longer to reach then over that whole line or at least close to so you can check if you don't have any dips under the level .it's nothing to have something level but you should check your level underneath aswell to see if there is any gaps.

Would you ever lay the slabs starting at the side of the patio furthest from the house and work up toward the house going ie against the fall (which in our case is supposed to run away from the house?) This is exactly what our contractor is doing right now with porcelain slabs. Having seen a number of your videos which always lay going away from the house I’m a bit worried about it. Thanks!
@tidybrickslandscaping
@tidybrickslandscaping 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not you’re starting point is always relative to the dpc course the end point doesn’t matter yet plus you might end up with cuts against the house not good 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 hope this helps
@heenalp77
@heenalp77 3 жыл бұрын
@@tidybrickslandscaping thanks! Why are cuts against the house bad? In their defence they have completely taken out the old patio, relayed a new reinforced concrete slab and have put in an extra layer of DPC course between the house and the new slab of concrete. I think they layer the slabs in this way because it’s a raised patio with about a 90 cm drop down to the grass level… I think they wanted the side facing out toward the garden to not have cuts so it would look nicer. Not sure if any of this makes it any better!
@tidybrickslandscaping
@tidybrickslandscaping 3 жыл бұрын
@@heenalp77 there is no need to have cuts right outside back of the house imagine the cut being small like 45mm or less it would look odd and possibly be out of square too small cut one end bigger cut the other end.. You know I see all you guys in U.K. do your outside tiling this way ,we in south africa first do the screed which is to get the whole floor the proper levels then we tile afterwards, not having to stress about dips in floor and also what about movement,where are the expansion joints? Also if tiles lift up you have to remove all the cement underneath as its not a continuous slab ,so you can't use it,also if client wants to maybe change the tiles he had to redo screed over and tiling which would be a waste of money. When you do screed first it allows you to make changes in tiling whenever you become tired of it then at least you have a solid slab and just have to replace tiles with less fuss and money. Just saying !!nothing against your work buddy !
