Honestly, I Just realised I thought of everything but that. Probably Boros or Naya though. However, I put the race class and background first, rolling them randomly, realising that I would enjoy what I got and thought what they experienced and how that shaped them. And then I thought of their attributes and associated them with certain traits. For example "like earth", "like fire" or more concrete Like Healer, Leader, Poet, romantic. She is a Half Drow Paladin of the Ancients that was an Entertainer. And I went for a theme of "emerging from dark to bring the light". She ended Up White but Black is surprisingly Missing at least on the surface. And the gentle sides of Red. As well as the Oath of the Ancients being very Green. Her darkness is more gentle and literal two. Imagine the darkness and dusk that White or Green would bring into the world. That's basically her. More melancholy and mystery than malice and morbidity.

I've got two games going. One, a Blue/Black Drow Scholar Rogue. Never pointlessly cruel, but callously manipulative and all too eager to gather knowledge, lore, and understanding... no matter who she has to hurt or deceive to do it. The other, I'm playing Karlach as Red/Green: she knows all too well what it's like to be in the Hells, that terrible place of Law and Evil, and appreciates her home all the more for it. It's fun to see how different their stories are becoming.

This video is an interesting take on the topic of roleplaying. I feel like too many of us create a protagonist and then roleplay as either cartoonishly good or evil when there are so many shades and niuance between those two. I will try using this system in my next DnD campaign (BG3 is a little too much for my wallet rn lmao xD)

Everything I've described 100% applies to dnd as well. But yeah, I agree. Most times, people do a good or evil run instead of trying to make something more nuanced

I've hit a wall with getting into Baulders gate but this fresh perspective and joining my love of magic with creating a character is just so inspiring. I've went from reluctantly installing again to give it another try, to chomping at the bit to be ready to play (after work that is 😅) Thank you so much!

What great advice. I always fall into that pitfall of RPG, where I end up playing myself. I have to wait a bit to buy the game, but when I do I will definitely take this advice and I like the idea of the diceroll to start with color selection.

Red white Blue made for an interesting sorcerer I played. I didn't create them using the color pie but if I go back it had aspects of the Red Blue with the burden and weight of the weight, but would temp and fight fate and believed they could shape their destiny. The Blue fit on striving to learn ore about their magic and tog get it under control. Did I mention this was a wild magic sorcerer who as a younger person, fireballs their village and left to learn control of the wild magic.

I love working with enemy colours like black and green - it forces me to create a character with paradoxes and/or compromises as a core part of their personality, and because of that I lean towards some sort of personality conflict. I might lose in effectiveness, but in return I get... SPICE! Great video :) it's not my time to play Baldur's Gate yet, but I'll come back here when my time finally arrives.

This is perfectly true for me. I love RPG games but I always fall into either playing how I would choose things or looking up guides for the best builds or endings and doing absolutely everything in 1 play through no matter what. So I never replay a game (maybe I’ll replay it a few years later for nostalgia but that’s it). For the first time ever, I adopted the actual playing a role idea for this game because I thought “Larian and BG3 deserves better from me” and I don’t even like CRPGA games. Couldn’t even get off the island in Divinity original sin 2 because I just couldn’t get into it. But somehow this game made me totally change how I played a game. I made a list and backstory on paper of my character and strictly followed those for my character and wow…I found myself going from fighting the urge to make choices that I thought were best for the choices my character would make, to full on being immersed in my choices and easily following them and because I was doing it that way I couldn’t do everything and I knew I was missing so much stuff I’d have to replay a different character. And I did, I immediately started a new character after I finished my first play through. Something I’ve never done before. It was (pun totally intended) game changing for me and how I come at a game.

In my current D&D campaign that I run, I have implemented a variation of the color system. I take each color and twist its meaning, still following the rules of the color wheel, but taking on a new meaning that then runs away in my world. My gods and demons each take on 2 colors, which gods always take enemy colors and demons take ally colors. My giants and dragons are both 1 color focused, but a Fire Giant and a Red Dragon reflect different sides of Red mana in my world. Giants as a general rule display the potential and inherit beauty of a color, while the Dragons instead display the power and danger of each color. Each of these 4 groups help to build out my world, flesh out the culture, and really keep my players engaged as they deal with the groups, cults, and cultures that surround these 4 groups (My players haven't found the 5th group yet, but it is a little obvious if you look at those 4 groups what the natural 5th group would be.) Edit: Campaign has been going on for a year and a half, and the players still keep theorizing about the world as they explore

I've always played rpgs as "myself" the decisions I make the things I do are always in line with my own personality and curiosity of how things will unfold. I had never even heard the term metagaming until yesterday and I pretty much always do it. I think Ill finish my playthrough of BG3 as myself and then make another character using this method for a second go around.

In truth, there is no wrong way to play , but if you are willing to step out of your comfort zone, you may find a totally new game because of it.

When I’ve played BG3, I made a different character for each romance I wanted to play-through separately. I love creating the backstory of the character and then playing how I think they’d react and what they would do in the situations shown in the game. It’s so cool.

Super interesting! I'm in the middle of my first playthrough right now and my character is a paladin that I would probably plant firmly into Naya colors. Believes in balance and acceptance and wants to save everyone, but the red is sprinkled in with a temper and impulsiveness that tends to lead him into trouble that his party members usually have to drag him out of. Very fun so far!

This video and your channel really make me excited to try this game and DnD in a new way. I was stuck in the slog of min-maxing and meta gaming RPGs. It was no longer fun for me. But now I feel like I’ve found a new way to approach gaming. Currently playing this game with my wife and probably would say her character is WGR or something in that ball park. Once I do a full play through with her I’m excited to just roll for colors and see where it goes.

This is another excellent video and it is almost enough to get me to invest in Baldur's Gate III. I was tickled to see artwork interpretations of some of the characters from "Honor Among Thieves," which prompted me to ask if you have given any thought to what colors would best describe each of the heroes from that adventure? As always I find your thoughts to be insightful and compelling.

Interesting. I will try this concept and hopefully it will help me get through a 2nd playthrough of the game. I found myself playing the same character on my previous 2nd playthrough attempt and it really drained the enjoyment of the run out of things. This could help.

Giving colors to the origin characters. Astarion Red/Black he's a ruthless individual who'll do whatever it takes to survive and he values his freedom after being inslaved by a cruel master for years. Shadowheart: White/Black Shar's church enforces obedience and secrecy she also tends to value nonviolent solutions to problems. Gale: Blue he's a largely neutral character tending to value knowledge over all else and is primarily focused on get rid of the Orb in his chest. Lae'Zel: Red/White/Black Githyanki culture is odd combination of survival of the fittest and complete obedience to Vlaakith something that she is completely devoted to. Wyll: White/Red he's a largely good person helping people and being a hero though he's a bit impulsive and he wants to get out of his pact with Mizora. Karlach: Red she's not that complicated of a character after being forced to fight in the blood war for ten years she values freedom over all else.

I find gale can go down the blue/black route if you don't steer him off course from it due to his overall ambition that drives him and can corrupt him at times if left unchecked.

Even when I use the Color Pie System to create a character, I do sometimes struggle with the micro decisions when roleplaying. Things like urgency, importance and how things match your characters moral compass and motivations are a part of the decision making. In Baldur's Gate 3 you are served with many options for getting your worm removed, and they of course vary in their methods and intentions. But naturally there is a sense of urgency, so how willing are you to ignore the optimal moral choices for the sake of surviving and finding a cure? Those decisions can be tough to make even without roleplaying. But is their a way to follow the color combination given too your character, to help you as a player take those micro decisions for your character?

omg my dm hates me when i have a color pie explanation every new character i make :D with bg3 i'm doing black green Bard with the Dark Urge. lost without memory he comes into the game knowing he has a purpose he has forgotten. he knows these words to invoke spells but remembers not how he learned them. Nothing will stand in his way to finding his lost past. The interesting part is the tinge of red with every kill. That spark of passion. The flash of a grin. Something red awakens within him with every battle. His eyes glint with a hidden Jund side. Maybe he will set this urge free or set himself free from the urge.

@@DiceTry it’s kinda hard to watch the video without that context. Can I roleplay as a hero originally from Neverwinter in this game though? All ive seen is Baldurian.
@DGDDice Жыл бұрын
from what I've seen doesn't look like it which is a shame because I would like to rp some characters like my dragonborn who came from his homeland of tymanther or some other races who came from their homelands rather than being restricted to being baldurian. maybe in the future I hope larian may consider different options of nationality. I hope at least anyway.

I'm new to cRPG, as I've played mostly Pokémon and Monster Hunter (and, sigh, LoL) in my gaming career, so roleplaying was a learning experience to me. My first gameplay was with an EK fighter because I wanted a spellblade character (too bad EK is mostly ass). Trying to understand the not easy nor well explained mechanics of the combat, I got into more meta gaming, which, combined with my item hoarding aspect, completely ruined any kind of immersion i set myself. Spoiling the game well before buying it didn't help either. Also, since I was playing myself, I played as neutral good as I could, though I feel like the game is very binary in that regard. Second playthrough: good Dark Urge. This time i wanted to have more immersion. Thus I made my white dragonborn, named it (proud of myself for this one, as someone who likes Fate franchise a lot) Albion Hollowheart, and tryed to roleplay as much as a Mewtwo from the first Pokémon Movie: someone used as a pawn, now free from Bhaal's grasp and out for vengeance, learning to do the right thing, not because it's right, but as an act of defiance. I started as warlock, then, when the bard died, I multiclassed into bard and leaned always in the control aspect. It sounded cool in my head, but it's going basically as my first playthrough as far as choices are concerned. Now, for the third playthrough I have in mind, I want to embrace and follow the very helpful tips you gave us, which are interestingly close to those I got learning some Character Design, expecially when talking about colour. Since I'm able to draw, I really want to draw my new character to learn more about her. I definetively want to lean more into neutral evil to change up my experience and downloaded mods to express my imagination more. I'm sorry for the verbosity and lenght of the comment, but I really wanted to talk about my experience. Thank you again for your tips.
