Fantastic vino-phile journey down the wine trail...!! Thank you Peter for your teaching method...!! Holy Crow ! I listened and let the wine and voice speak to me and I landed 2 out of 3...! However the CDP I did not see coming with the high, rather hot as you mentioned alcohol !! [ wine #3 ]...btw, guessed the region as well... { #3 I thought might be a Cab-Franc...}... Nonetheless, a beautiful example of how to relax and follow your senses and memory/experiences...!! 😎🍷☮

Hard to believe, after your description of the white wine I guessed Viognier. So, your description was spot on. The reds were obvious, except the village of the Syrah.

I love wine, and I try to educate my husband/wife friends about wine, since they ask. When I describe wine we drink, they look at me with blank stares. Then I realize they NEVER go on hikes, stop to smell the roses, have never taken a hike into the forest to smell the earth and woodlands. How do people like this appreciate wine if they haven’t appreciated life??

Really fascinating to watch you dissect out the wine. Can you explain a little more the phrase “new oak on the wine”?

You can age wine in oak barrels (new, old) or in inert vessels, depending on many factors such as the grape variety you are working with. If what you are looking at has been aged in oak, then it may reveal some presence of tannins (depending on the toasting level and age of the barrel), and specific aromatics (tobacco, sigar, smoke in the case it's french oak, or vanilla, baking spices in the case of american oak). When he says he doesn't "see any new oak" he implies he didn't detect the previously mentioned effects and that this must have aged either in old barrels (or more neutral ones), in stainless steel, or in cement (in some cases).

Pretty good answer. I will add to that a brand new barrel imparts 100% of it flavors (such as vanilla, chocolate, coffee, butterscotch. toast), a one year old barrel has about half of its flavor left, and a two year or older barrel does not impart any flavor into the wine. It should slao be noted that American Oak has pronounced vanilla, coconut and dill aromas and flavors (see my video on Rioja that I will post on Sunday) Thanks for watching!

Thanks so much for all three of your comments. I guess more specifically in the Costco video, with regards to the first wine(Chardonnay), Peter you mentioned it’s aged in two different oaks and something along the lines of 28% new. Can you explain that? Is the wine moved to a different barrel during aging?
