Merci encore! :) PS- I used Google Translate to translate my English into French, so I hope it was accurate!

Have you noticed that, in general, for the citation pronunciation of a word, the pitch level of the syllables before the primary stress, if any (e.g. ab+so in absolutely), is above that of the syllables that appear after it (e.g. ly in absolutely).
@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jacob - Yes, this does indeed happen in the word "absolutely"! I can't say for sure why it happens in every word, but in "absolutely" it seems to occur because the syllables before the primary stress are earlier in the word (and "ab" has some secondary stress), so they are more likely to be at a higher pitch. The final syllable (which is directly after the primary stress) is at the end of the word, which is likely to be said at a lower pitch.

Great video. I checked Lexico and this is what I have for /ˈɛstəˌmeɪt/. What you seem to have at 3:44 is /ˈɛstəˈmeɪt/. Can a word have two primary stresses? I also checked the Oxford English Dictionary and found /ˈɛstɪmeɪt/ and it had no secondary stress. Hoping you could clear up my confusion. Thank you. 😀
@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent4 жыл бұрын
Hi Vince! Thank you so much for this question :) That was a typo on my end! I review my videos multiple times before I publish them to make sure I don't have any typos, but inevitably one slips past my eyes every now and then. Thank you for bringing this to my attention! I will try to update this video if I still have access to the raw footage. Your IPA transcription from Lexico is the one I was trying to use: /ˈɛs.təˌmeɪt/, with secondary stress on /meɪt/. I mistakenly used the primary stress symbol /ˈ/. To answer your question about primary stress: A word can only have one syllable with primary stress, but longer words may have one or more syllables with secondary stress. Thank you again for asking me about my IPA transcription for /ˈɛs.təˌmeɪt/. I understand how that would be confusing! (Ugh - typos!!)

Hi, thank you so much for helping us in our path to improve our american accent. I am having a hard time knowing about when to use a schwa sound, for instance I'd like to know if speaking in general, all weak sylabes use the schaw sound, could this be sort of a rule? and in the other hand, besides IPA :), if there a way to find out which is the secondary stressed sylable in words with more than 3 sylabes or even with 2 sylables? , for instance in the word banana I understand it has the stressed sylable and two weak sylables with the schwa sound, so no secondary stressed sylable is found in it. I hope I could made myself clear with my question. I wish you the best and I'd like to say thanks so much again for your awesome job!.

The symbol of primary stress is different from secondary, right? But how is it the same in the word “estimate” (verb) but you said the last syllable is secondary stress. Help, please! 😭
@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent Жыл бұрын
Hi Niña - Thanks so much for your question! The primary stress symbol /ˈ/ is indeed different from the secondary stress symbol /ˌ/, but I think in the video I have a typo! I'm so sorry for that confusion - I triple check my work before I publish it, but every once in a while, a mistake slips through. The IPA of "estimate" (verb) should be this: /ˈɛs.təˌmeɪt/ That is my mistake! I will try to re-edit this video so that the symbols are correct. :)
