Can I ask you just one question , someone told Me about if I do knee down on motorbike , the air from the tire has to be cut down a little bit let say 35 psi cut down to maybe 30 psi ?!!! As like you are the professional , may you share a little bit more information to Me ?!!!

Learning how to get your knee down is extremely beneficial for street riding, even though it’s 100% unnecessary for street riding. If I do move my body on the street, it’s only my upper body, I don’t move my lower body at all, there’s no need. This is what I mean. In order to get your knee down, you go through the process of learning how much your bike can lean by taking higher level courses. Your vision must be really good, your timing, body position, and speed... you learn smooth throttle control, to stay relaxed...you learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable. You learn what you and your bike are capable of. If you learn how to get your knee down, you know how much lean angle there is for your bike, therefore on the street, if you go into a corner a bit too fast or need to lean more, you know where the limit is. You know what it feels like all the way over. You’re not wondering or guessing what your bike can do, you’ve spent the time exploring it. It’s only the people who say “it’s pointless” who can’t do it, therefore don’t know what it takes to actually do it. It’s a combination of many things coming together in perfect unison. Additionally, is also fun as hell! Plus if you can’t do this easily less than 30mph in a big safe environment, why in the world should you try on the track at faster speeds? Learn to master this at slower speeds where the risk is minimal so when you’re doubling the speed on the track, that’s the last thing to worry about. Hey man, great video. There's a plethora of videos out there about getting your knee down, but not one of them is as instructive as this one. I love that you do it at 15-20mph as well.... skills!!

Great video, thank you! 35 min and I had my first knee down. Far from perfect but it motivated me to spend a lot more time practicing it and everything else. And as you say it gives you tons of confidence in what your bike is capable of when you one day need it.

Just bought a pair of knee protector with slider to put over my trouser few weeks ago. Got in empty parking area, clean little rocks and began to make circle at 35km/h with a video camera to see my posture. I do less than 5 circle and watch video. Step by step I put more lean angle to get almost 45°, but my knee was still 20cm above ground. I locked that lean angle and try to modify my posture to get knee down. After few tries, I managed to drag knee very smoothly with 40° lean. Video make a huge difference. At the beginning, you think you put some good lean but the reality is far from your perception ! And only video will help you. It’s incredible how a tire can have some grip. Doing this at low speed requires good balance and throttle control. If you apply Eddy’s advices, you’ll get it 100% and it will become natural. You just need to practise at least once a week.

By watching your videos, I learned how to turn my bike in curvy roads, doing sharp turns from complete stop. Now it's time to drag my knee. Great video as always!

Man your videos helped me finally get my knee down, I did a track day not once could I do it then. I did what you said if I can't do it in parking lot how do I expect to get it on a track going even faster. Just watched vids about traction, led meto browse this...eeeexcellent. i been getting my knee down closer for first time ever after 2years riding. 70mph hit corner felt amazing. looking forward to getting it all slow now and applying to fast. Big love bro

I can't believe you do that on a GS. That thing is massive and heavy! I've been riding for 16 years, all sport bikes, and I've tried many times to get the knee down. Alas, I am very petite for a male at 56kg and 177cm tall so with somewhat "regular" sized legs it has often been a case of feeling the edge tyre grip starting to go before manage to get the knee to the pavement. You seem to be big and tall enough for the GS. I would never attempt riding one of those. I watched your U-turn videos also, as my pet hate is doing them in tight turns for fear of dropping the bike. You have some great advice, I've learnt to adapt many forms of advice now because some riding schools here in Australia recommend a complete stop, then U-turn in a tight 6 meters with full lock. I've practiced with the riding schools bikes thankfully, as I did on one occasion stall the bike and drop it. All part of learning. Keep up the great work Eddie, thanks again for the advice and you've made another subscriber!

It can be done on any bike, once you get the technique down, I've done it on sport bikes, Harley's, everything. Bike doesn't matter. I'm 5'9" and my friend is 5'6" and she can do everything I can do and she's on the same bike I have! It's all the technique!

I ve seen knee down for light bikes and i asked if i need to do counter steering and you answered no,and then i ve seen this video with knee down and you told us to do counter steering,i m sorry sir if you re thinking i m stupid ,i m a little counfused , but just i want to be sure,cause i m just learning from your video i dont have money for courses.Thank so much.

It all happens as you get everything set up...just go practice and see what works. You're never going go learn how to do anything unless you go and try.

Great tutorial video thanks. I always thought you had to be at a higher speed for your knee down! I’m also learning counter steering as well at the ripe old age of 50. I’d like to get out more on the bike but the British weather is rubbish(trash)

Hi Eddie, another question, when you enter a corner, do you lean your body first, then apply pressure on the inner bar, or do you counter-steer into the corner first, then just hold your body there? From what I can tell in my current riding, I just lean into the corner with my body and just apply pressure to the inner bar naturally when needed. Is this the correct technique?

Today I accidentally scraped my foot on the ground on my ZX10R (bas foot positioning) and realised I have no lean angle awareness. Sadly the experience spooked me as when it happened I believe I lurched a bit and it kinda felt like the rear stepped out (it didn't, I just jumped a bit). Thankfully, this guy here is super full of info and I'll be practicing body positioning etc in the carpark for a bit before jumping back up the MTN.

I am new to riding on 2 wheels, and I didn't know that people lean, just to make bike lean less, so to make it safer. I always thought they lean for balance or some other reason. Good advice, thanks for that!

under90seconds you’re welcome! The motorcycle must lean to turn...here’s a good way to think about this, I’ve heard many other people say this and it’s true. More lean = more risk. The more you lean, the riskier it gets. Getting your body to the inside like this, and you don’t have to put your knee out there, allows the bike to remain more upright...keep in mind, this is all for faster turns, not slow u-turns or simply taking a right at a stop sign. This is for higher speed turning out riding at the local track or on your favorite roads.

I saw a video from simon crafar with motovudu and he said its better to sit closer to the tank (race track conditions tho). The reason behind this was so that there was more weight on the front end and its aparently safer to stear this way. If you sit back you get less weight on the front and its easier to wash out the front tire. As i said this was in race track conditions and he did have to accelerate out of the corner to. I've only touched my knee once and i'm no expert, but i like information like this. Keep up the work :D

Great explanation. Thank you. I do have a question not necessarily about getting my knee down, but it is related. I have found that moving my lower body on the street has helped my confidence and feel tremendously (I ride a sport bike if that is relevant). However, after watching several of your videos concerning body position, you seem to say that it is unnecessary (and even unwise?) for the street. I dont have the same feel for what the bike is doing by just moving my upper body. I would greatly appreciate your correction and/or clarification. Thanks for all that you do.

I don't think lower body movement is necessary for street riding...too many people try to do too much...just master the basics. Vision, throttle control, the brakes, and counter steering. Body position is a tool, doesn't mean you need it every corner at every speed for every ride. If you want to practice it all the time, go for it, but I don't think lower body is needed for the streets.

In fact, it seems to help my vision, braking, etc. Without moving my lower body, I approach some turns with more trepidation than when I move my lower body. Perhaps it is a mental thing.Thanks again.

you're welcome. If it seems to help those other aspects, then it's all mental. Practice each individually then merge them altogether...therefore you'll be able to use or switch out any tool you want instantaneously, even mid-turn depending the traction, pace, etc.

Thanks Eddie, great video. My bike drags mufflers in the canyons petty often, so I need to learn how to keep it more upright in the turns (though I don't necessarily have to drag a knee) and this video looks like a good start in learning.

So to get the bike to lean you counter steer? And as soon as it does you let it turn the right way? In the video you are steering the same way you rotate when you have your knee down.. I learned to only counter steer for a short moment to let physics move you in the right direction. Nice video, body position helps a lot!

I'll be doing my second track day next month, and I'm not going to worry at all about getting my knee down. I'm going to concentrate on other stuff you talk about like body position, vision, smooth control etc. I've watched KZbin videos of track day riders dragging a knee while ignoring the position of the rest of their body. I might try it in the nice little car park I've found though, some time in the future (I'm a white belt!).

Knee down happens naturally when a bunch of variables come together...and if you have good grip and good traction and good body position and your knee isn't touching, you're over-slowing your corner entry.

When the pilot road 2 tires came out, There where a bunch of people saying you couldnt drag knee with them. So I went out and did exactly this in a parking lot. Its never the tires, its the rider. I got to where I could get my knee down under 8 MPH. It became a contest for me. To see how slow I could go. At those speeds the body position has to change big time to compensate for not having the centrifugal force. not to mention you cant counter steer either.

I love your videos and how you break it down simply into steps of progression. That being said, when 1st learning this, I would watch how easy it looks on video and get frustrated. Once you get that 1st feel for being on the actual side of the tire it all comes together

I admire your passion for motorcycling, and your will to share knowledge about it, but I don't understand why is so great to get the knee down... I'm quite new in riding and I ride for pleasure and as a necessity in a city with crowded traffic. I train weekly to improve my riding skills, but I feel no need or whish to put effort and time in practicing just to do something I don't enjoy.

What’s the point of learning how to get your knee down? First and foremost, it’s extremely fun to do…that alone is reason enough. But for knee down itself, it certainly isn’t necessary on the street but that doesn’t mean it should be ignored completely…all the secondary benefits you gain by learning how to do it are helpful to your overall riding ability. Learning to get your knee down is all about being in full control of your motorcycle. Same could be said about tight figure 8’s or full lock turns. Do you “do that” on the street? Well no, but it does elevate your overall riding ability. Learning and practicing full body position will give you confidence with yourself and your bike. This is a great way to practice your vision, staying relaxed, you’ll learn how the timing of when and how much you move your body makes a difference with how the bike handles and how quickly. You’ll discover where your fear threshold is and how to get past it, where to place your weight, what’s most comfortable for you based on your body shape, flexibility, and type of bike you have, it’s a great way to explore higher lean angles and practice smooth inputs on the throttle and handlebars, you’ll learn what speed & radius turns makes it easier or more challenging, etc. etc. If you never learn how to do this or even attempt it, you’ll never understand the difficulty and benefits it provides. Side note, if you ride on the track, learning full body position at slower speeds is much less risky and will ease a bit of anxiety when going faster. To start, set up a 40-50ft diameter circle in a clean environment, ensure you’re wearing appropriate gear, warm up your tires and give it a try. If you’re solely focusing on trying to get your knee down, you could crash and possibly get hurt. So the focus is on your body position, timing, vision, throttle control, staying relaxed and your speed. If all those come together with proper technique, warm tires and good grip, knee down will happen.

Learning how to knee drag helps a lot especially for riders who aren’t good on corners. Tips for beginners, try practicing it using underbone MCs. You can develop your skills from there before getting to ride higher CC’s which has sports mode.

For beginners, if you have the determination, trust in yourself and your bike.. it shouldn’t be taking more than a minute to learn how to drag your knees. My simple advice put an object at the center and keep looking at it as your guide while leaning make a half butt sitting position and start learning to control your throttle so you won’t crash or overshoot then start from your left knee before practicing your right during doughnut runs and track runs. You can do it too guys 🔥👍

Using this technique it would also be possible with dual sport or knobbly tyres which are more akin to an adventure motorcycle. Useful to explore the scope of these tyres on the road.

@@MotoJitsu The tyres and the bike - no. But your instruction shows people how beneficial hanging off a motorcycle - and at least assuming the body position can be. And actually dragging the knee, if clearance permits, is much safer that an inline position and trying to scape the pegs.

Depends on the tire...I would never attempt knee down on full knobby tires but if they're more dual sport you could and I have....but this has nothing to do with street riding, I don't move much at all on the street, nor have I ever scrapped the pegs on the street.

@@MotoJitsu I think your video has great benefit for those new to street riding, particularly in terms of positioning - but as you say, most definitely depends on the bike and tyres. Even if you simply practice this at low speed in a parking lot as you are doing, it helps understand both the motorcycle, the tyres and posture.

I'm not made out of money, so I'm always trying to save the bike. I need to reach the place of commitment where I'm not concerned about replacing damaged parts on the bike if I drop it during practice. If I can get to that place, I'm sure the skill level will rapidly go up.

Once I learned how to do it when I took the Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic Level 1, I would spend 2-3 hours, 4-5 times a week practicing figures 8's knee dragging for months and months...and that was 4 years ago and I still practice for hours! Now I can do it on any bike!

I have watched many videos from professional to amateur, I also practiced many hours but my skill is still very low and dangerous. I think all the teachers here are missing one very important element. It's the individual body. Regardless of the mind/scare.. as I guess we all understand the risk and ready to take some. The muscle strength/build is very different between us. Twisting the body in a lean angle requires massive strength from legs, spine, bell muscles.. I'm an endurant athlete but I can do this well at all. It's a very different set of muscle to running, cycling... so when I enter the turn i can't hold my upper body very well, I therefore abuse the handle bar. This is very risky! So: thanks to all teachers, they're right, but each of us need to do these things before try their methods and I'm sure we will succeed and enjoy our ride to our favorite. 1. set your bike to your fit (rearset height, handle bar, tyre...)2. Train the body at the posture of the corner to make sure you can free you hands at a full lean. 3. Start practice in reality combining with throttle control and brake.

ok...when i "master" this on parking, hot to train lean angle/kne down on street where is much greater speed? i was always in scare because i think that bike will drop or tires will loose grip and go in slide.

You first have to learn how to get your knee down...don't get ahead of yourself. IF you learn how to do this consistently less than 25mph, it doesn't matter how fast you go because you already know how to do it. And I don't move my body much at all for the street nor do I recommend knee dragging on the street.

@@MotoJitsu is it on market any good protection for bike protection if bike drop in this exercise? i have s1000rr and have 2 days this training behind me. i can on parking and safety bike lean up to 50 degree but when i am on my bike without safety wheels i am scary. one digression for better videos. buy rode wireless go video mic...with this you wont have wind noise, reverb from room etc...

Hello Eddie, great videos. I have learned a lot from them. Please could you make video on "advanced knee down" ? I ve been riding for half a year and I go to race track every week for a few hours. I ve been able to get the knee down but I would like to get more deep into the technique of doing it. For example, can I somehow estimate how much more I can lean the bike? I still dont feel that..will it come with time? I hope you get what I am asking here...:) thanks

yes they were scrapping a few times...I do have yamaha mt-07 (I think its called fz 07 in the US) so I guess they are quite low so they start scrapping earlier then for example on a sport bike right? So once I get comfortable with lean angle on a level that my footpegs are scrapping, what would you recommend next? How can I assess that the lean angle is enough but not too much? thanks

Are you off the bike? As in off to the inside of the bike, racer style? Do you look like Marquez? lol If you're at your bike's limits with leaning...maybe you can focus on other things, line selection, throttle control, later braking, etc.

Nice video ! One question : do you keep pushing on the handle bars while you are turning around or is it only one push at the beginning until your knee is down and then steering around ?

Chris Bosman thanks! Good question...so there’s an initial push to get the bike to tip over (lean) and continued push until you get your desired lean angle. Once you do, then you relax the push on the inside grip and the wheel then points in the direction you’re going. The technical term of this you can look up is the caster effect of trail...it’s explained really well in the book Total Control Ed 2, by Lee Park’s. To go left you push left quickly and forward until your lean is where you want then relax it slightly....the bike is built to know what to do, no need for you to do anything else but stay relaxed :) hope this helps!

Chris Bosman no problem...yes the bike (and you) can do so much more than what you think...depending on the ground clearance of your bike, it’ll lean much more , just need to slowly work up to it. I suggest taking a professional courses to learn how to do this then practice a lot.

Is knee dragging necessary for all bike types? I'm a new rider, on an adventure bike, and I rarely find myself in a tight enough curve to have my knee extended.

Super necessary! WHY LEARN & PRACTICE KNEE DOWN? #1 because it’s fun!! 🤪 don’t need any other reason but if you do want to know👇🏼 #2 Learning to do this provides a way to be comfortable being uncomfortable. It teaches you how to do something that’s challenging, which can be applied to any aspect of your life. Learning and practicing full body position gives you a lot of confidence, it teaches you what your bike is capable of, you learn various levels of grip with your tires, you’ll understand how leaning causes motorcycle to slow down, so you need to slightly increase throttle the more you lean in order to maintain your speed. This is a great way to practice your vision, staying relaxed, committing to a goal, build muscle memory-you’ll learn how the timing of when and how much you move your body makes a difference in how the bike handles. You’ll discover the limitations of yourself, where your fear threshold is, where to place your weight, what’s comfortable for you, etc. If you never learn how to do this or even attempt to, you’ll never understand the difficulty and benefits it provides. Many people simply have never tried, attended a class teaching body position, or practice therefore prematurely say it’s pointless-giving an opinion about something outside your experience is just ignorant. Go practice and see for yourself. Set up a 40ft diameter circle, wear full gear, and get to it. As a reminder, I think knee dragging or any movement with your lower body is 100% unnecessary on public roads. In fact, if you followed behind me on the street, even if we are going at a good pace, I hardly move my body at all, if anything just upper body.

Hey Eddie! When I go riding with my friend, I will try to be a bit early and take 5 to 10 minutes to do some slow speed exercises, any particular exercises you like? I have to orrible habbit of grabbing the clutch in slow speed corners. Any tips on making U turns without using the clutch?

Good for you! No, I use the clutch when doing slow speed, and for my that means less than 5 mph.

Don’t grab the clutch in slow speed corners, or you will be coasting. Part of the bikes balance is as result of the gyroscopic effect of forward drive. The bike should always be in drive with the gear engaged . It’s safer

If I try this at a low speed in a parking lot is there a big risk to somehow have the bike lose traction from me leaning even if the bike is upright? Or is it generally safe to slowly work up to the proper position and not easily wreck? If I go too slowy and start to tip could I easily correct the situation by sticking my leg out and adjut steering? And can you please clarify one thing that I hear different opinions on: When initiating a turn, do you first countersteer and then lean, or do both at the same time, or start to lean first and then countersteer. mckricks1 thanks for the question! First, I would say if it’s a huge empty parking lot with good grip and you’re FULLY gear up...the risk isn’t much. I would suggest 2nd gear on most bikes, no more than 25mph. Start with a large circle, say 40 ft diameter circle and continue going around, trying out the body position. Then go the other direction, seeing what’s comfortable for you. With the correct body position and lean angle, your knee will touch, but it takes a lot of practice. This is already assuming you’re comfortable on your bike of course. If you think you’ll just fall over, it’s highly unlikely. A tiny tiny bit of throttle will make the bike stand up if you think you’re getting sketchy. Slow Throttle control Is crucial. Counter-steering is what makes the bike lean. Once you push on the handlebar, the bike will lean in that direction. Happens at same time. It’s a firm, continuous push until you reach your desired lean to make the corner. Does that help?

Thanks for the reply. It helps, but I should have been more clear with the last part of my my question because I am still unsure. In my original question when I mentioned lean I meant lean created by body weight position adjustment, not lean created by countersteering (my fault for the misunderstanding). I know that you can either intitiate a turn with countersteer or also just by shifting your bodyweight to create lean. So if I want to do a regular turn am I first countersteering or shifting my body weight, or same time? I know for the knee drag turn you said to do adjust in order of body head bike. So in a regular slower turn would I also first start with leaning my body weight a bit to the side followed by countersteer? I know it also happens at pretty much the same time but I would just like to know more precisely. Thanks a lot!

mckricks1 anytime! Keep asking!! I gotcha...so just moving your body to the inside will make the bike start to slowly make the bike lean, but without touching the handlebars, you’ll never make the bike turn quickly. Watch Twist of the Wrist 2 on KZbin, does a good job explaining and showing body steering vs counter steering. For normal types of turns (over 20mph) if you’re going to adjust your body, get it done before you turn, so 1. Body 2. Head 3. Bike...is a good rule of thumb, you’re right. You don’t want to be leaned over then decide to bounce around upsetting the suspension with your body position. Body position before you turn, yes. Keep in mind sometimes for turns I don’t move my body at all, I just stay neutral; all depends on my speed, the camber, blind corner, if there’s gravel or good grip, etc. does that help?

then stop pushing or you'll keep leaning until you crash.
