The advantage grip athletes, strongmen, and rock climbers have is they don't have to focus on training their fingers. They can focus on just the wrist so it catches up to the fingers
@Bapiten-hy3lk3 ай бұрын
But mostly, no one needs separate exercises for fingers and wrist because you can't do your cupping movements properly without fingers.

To put it in anatomical terms, in armwrestling: flexion of the MTP joint (metatarsophalangeal) is more important than flexion of the IP joints (interphalangeal). In another “language”: keeping the base of the fingers at 90 degree angle to the palm is more important than moving the finger joints themselves. I would argue there are certain unique styles of pulling that do use a more traditional squeezing movement of the hand, but the base that is built on is the same as what you are talking about. Without the finger-wrist connection it’s useless.

Here's a tip. Train the whole hand including all the fingers. Most people have a weak pinky and ring finger because when u workout, let's say hammer curls...u only need the thumb, index finger and middle finger to hold the weight. Most people forget about the pinky and ring finger which would give the hand soo much more grip power if all 5 fingers were engaged.

It is important to note though that depending on what style someone is good at personally, then a move that involves squeezing via the fingers can be extremely effective. The first people that come to mind for me is Travis Bagent & RVJ (RVJ seems to rely on crushing with the bottom 3 fingers, pinky-ring-etc.).

I would argue that pinch strength does have its place in a training regimen, since you're using the muscles of the hand to keep the fingers static, not flexing the fingers, plus the thumb is trained which can cause growth and a thick thumb and thumb pad is useful for armwrestling. I wouldn't do exclusively pinch training, obviously, but a little bit here and there is definitely worthwhile. Sure, the wrist might not be straight or bent in, but the finger/hand position IS armwrestling position like with a flat handle.

Ray, when doing containment I get a lot of discomfort on the ulnar side of my wrist. Only happens on my right hand which leads me to believe I've hurt it at some point since it's usually my stronger hand. The joint feels very unstable when I get all the way out on my fingertips aswell - do you have any experience with this?
@ChimpFlipperJr3 ай бұрын
Yes, I have had the same thing off and on. It means you have a mild injury there, you might be able to work around it by adjusting your hand placement. Imagine you’re holding a containment handle, you can hold it in the center or more at the front or more at the back. Hold it where more of the handle is protruding from the thumb side, not the pinky side. This will reduce the stress on the ulnar side of your wrist.
