Sounds like Latvian has some similar traits with Hungarian. Perfect phonemicity, stress on first syllable, more complex grammar (though Hungarian has something like 17 to 23 cases, depending on how you count), etc. Great video. Nice to see some love for the more 'obscure' languages of Europe.

Thanks for such an interesting interview. I think Dace may get another pupil 😉. I can read/speak Latvian, though I have had no formal grammar training which is exactly what I need. More in this format please! Great for the downtime in winter when less is happening on the farm. Paldies!

Dace has been my tutor for two years. She’s very good at what she does and her online course is brilliant. Thanks for doing this interview. I’m curious to know how much Latvian you have learned in the last five years and how much you use it on a daily basis?

Great to hear! Hard to say, I have the advantage of being exposed to and using Latvian everyday because of living in the countryside and my wife's parents are here who don't speak English. I would say quite a lot of vocabulary but not so much grammar. People are always impressed when I speak even though I think there's lots of mistakes.

Latvian is a very difficult language.... some people have lived here for many (like 30-50 or even more) years but still do not have enough knowledge to pass a simple exam. Well, perhaps they did not have enough motivation to take this marathon.
