For the first time, I feel like I'm actually working WITH the tools, instead of against them. I'm good at recording, but not so good at mixing. This series has really stepped up my mix, I can already tell at this step that I''m going to be a lot happier with my final mix!

I feel that too. It's such a rewarding feeling!

Colin, you are so full of GarageBand! I won't be surprised that you'd be having constant dreams of GarageBand😀. You are a great blessing to me, helping me to know how to go about this job of working with audio.

Hey, Colin! Just for clarification as this is the first time I've heard you mention this point. When we uncheck the 'export projects at full volume' box in preferences, we never turn this back on in another step, correct? Thank you!

With mixing I’ve never zeroed all the volumes and moved them up but usually have left the vocals around the 0 position or just below and then moved everything else down until all sounds balanced. But I’ve never done master bus processing in the mixing stage, but I see how it can help pull everything together so will start to do that from now on. Your videos are really excellent and you have the gift of being able to teach - some people have knowledge but don’t know how to get it across but you have both. Also I like how you explain why you do each step. Thank you!! This is all really helpful!

Colin, your videos are the best explanation of GB and mixing I've ever watched. Thank you! Using this technique on my mixes now and it helps a ton!

Thanks for all the hints, man! My surgery recovery time was consumed with mixing and mastering. I followed all your steps and am more than happy with my results, although they may not be quite perfect. My songs have been mainly acoustic, with some basic percussion, ac guitar, other string instruments, harmonica and some electric licks and fills.. 16 songs in all was quite a task. I did have to backtrack and address some earlier steps which did not seem to turn out satisfactorily. The results have motivated me to seek inspiration to write more material. Thanks once again, I firmly believe you are the real deal.

I've only learned about BUSTERse recently and it's love at first listen. Another great Analog Obsession plugin. There are videos out there with blind test comparison with the Waves SSL bus compressor and frankly in most cases BUSTERse sounds better. As with many other processing tasks less is more.

The amount of effort you put into all this is amazing. I have been working off of your content and the guide. I am getting ready to release my first song. Its insanely overwhelming and I haven't even gotten into drums yet. Very simple songs with very few tracks. I seem to be taking two steps forward and 3 steps back but like you said after all this is over it should help me move on more seamlessly with the next release. I don't have any plans to work on anything other than Garage band. I am very impatient and constantly second guessing myself. "will I ever make this song, or when will this song start sounding good enough to pair next to a reference track or make it on to a spotify playlist?" "Perhaps I should give this up since I am not catching on very quickly" "perhaps turning to a life of crime will help fund paying you to mix and master it for me?" These are some of the thoughts I am wrestling with. Thank you for all you have done to help Indie Artists like myself!

Following along as you go with my own project. Got to be honest though I can't her much difference, if any, when you were adding EQ and comp. Even in my own project, I have to make much more dramatic changes before I notice a difference. Too many loud gigs as a teenager and playing in bands has possibly numbed my lugs to subtlety.

Couple of things about BUSTERse worth knowing. One is for some reason the meter showing the amount of compression doubles what it's actually doing (lot of side by side comparisons with big name pay for master bus compressors show this clearly) and the other is in the top right clicking on Analog Obsession lets one set it to 2x oversampling which improves the quality. When it's on Analogue Obsession is in red.

Question: When you run the master eq, should your visual line (of music) stay below the 0 line (as it looks like it does, except for the low end stuff)? I hope someone can answer this for me. Thanks, great resource here!

Hey Colin, thanks for all the info you share! Quick question: Are you sending emails about a Mixing Course? If it's you, the link is not working. If not... check your accounts...
@TheBandGuide2 жыл бұрын
Hey Rafael- I am! It's called The Ultimate GarageBand Mixing course- is that what you're receiving emails about? Could you respond to the email with the broken link? I think I figured out which one it was, but want to be sure. Looks like it was just the bottom link in my email on Monday?

@@TheBandGuide Yes, that's the series of emails. I've already reply to that email.

A question I have and maybe a input video would be eq and compression on midi tracks. They come preset so do I or should I still eq and compress them?

Im confused: so after you master the whole song woth EQ and Compression, you back and put EQ and compression on each track?

I’ve been having issues with mixing GarageBand iOS. If I set the volume to low on my tracks to a certain point that when I merge all my tracks together it’ll come up in a blank audio wave and you can’t hear anything else I have my tracks at a certain volume but my 808s and everything are loud at that point.
