Had to redo this video but I'm glad I did as I think second time I explain a bit better... Using Standard Scraper are not difficult, yes they do carry different tehniques and some safety issues but if you follow few simple rules ,you should be able to use standard scraper without nasty catches.
Hope this video will help out .
Enjoy

I am no expert by any means but a small tip I learned the hard way with scraper is to take into consideration how agressive the burr/edge is on the scrapper. I was having a lot of bad catches even when the scrapper was below 90deg only to noticed I had rolled the burr so much it was lumberjack hook and would dig into the wood 😅. Still fogging my shield a little when approaching a scapper to the surface for the first time on a project.
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning

That is true and that is why I suggest when someone is starting out to use the burr straight from grinder, its much less grabby

I can't say that scraping causes me problems, but your instructed so much more theory I think it will be even smoother for me. So many instructors tell you what and how. The why is what allows you to apply the knowledge in any circumstance. Thank you for the theory. Scraping a bit above center was new to me. I'm looking forward to the scraping of the yellow heart, in my chuck and ready to go, tomorrow.

Another excellent video Tomi, thank you. I have also heard Richard talk about a very delicate touch. Is there any chance you and Richard will get together one day for a video? That would be the all time best thing on KZbin. Also, can I make a request? I have seen various people talk about how they price their work. Often going on a size of the bowl calculation. I can't see how this works as, for example, a live edge burr with a wide rim and some beads etc. may take many times longer to make than a plain bowl of the same size from a piece of free cutting plain wood. Does the wood itself make a difference to final price? A piece of spalted Plum usually being more desirable than, say, a plain piece of Sapele. A video on that subject would be very interesting.

Thanks for the video Tomislav! Do you think regulare scraper is much eficiant than negative rake one? Why don't you use negative rake scrapers?
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning 4 күн бұрын
Yes, for me they are more efficient as I don't have to sharpen them nearly as often , to me I just don't see the need for negative rake scraper.... I have only one, Steve Jones grind and I use it only to round square smaller stuff. But that doesn't mean they don't work,they are just another way of smoothing the surface and we all prefere something different.☺️

Ofcourse, I would turn forward and reverse a few times during sanding, especially if there is a raised grain like im this case. This is what I call bowl scraper,ita 25x10mm, 1inch wide by 3/8 thick
