I liked this even before you saved me $300 on Fusion - ordering the dongle via your link! As always, your video is extremely accessible, provides valuable lessons clearly, and throws in some added tips and trivia. Also, I think it's just so great that you provide tutorials anyone can follow for *free* before deciding to go all-in on software purchases. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and wisdom.

Awww, thank you, Joe!! I am so glad you like it. You basically break down my content strategy lol. It is hard to learn dry knowledge and 3D is not the easily to learn - I hope with my little effort - it makes this amazing medium / creator tool access to more people and more people can create VR180 or just VR for headset this years - so more audiences we have and everyone win :)

Hey welcome to the VR180 world - I am currently shooting 2 music video in VR180 with Z Cam K2Pro (if you follow me on Instagram and see the BTS stories) - and this is with artist with 5 million monthly listeners in Spotify and for Oculus TV / Oculus Venue. So VR180 is going to be push by major VR platform as it is easier to make and high resolution - you should see more content from major artist coming this year or next :) It is time to learn for sure and I will do my best to break down the technical difficult and work with blackmagic / adobe to make our life a little bit more easier lol.

I'm new to this 180 VR filming and am watching as many of your videos as I can. They're all excellent. I remember seeing in one video where you addressed the jittery playback in Davinci with 8K Canon RAW and how hard and frustrating it is to edit. I cannot find that video again. Can you point me in the direction of which video? I think you suggested how to set it up for smooth playback to edit it. I'm at the point where I'm editing and as you said, very frustrating. Again, much appreciation for all your tips, tricks and opinions.

Hey Hugh, thanks for all your videos, very informative! Do you know if there is a workflow that allows the insertion of text into Stereoscopic LR 180, 200 FOV Fisheye using the Free version of Da Vinci Resolve? I don't have Studio, and it seems in the years since you made this video, many of the VR tools and options such as the Stereo modes in the Spherical Camera node and the Stack options in the 3D Renderer node are no longer available in the free version (along with things like the Splitter and Combiner nodes). If there is already a vid showing this, could you please point me in the right direction? Many thanks!

Still not in the free version but the studio version workflow still the same as this video. No major update in the world of Stereo post production - what I learned 10 years ago in my Hollywood 3D career still apply these days. Do hope there is an easier one or even a free one but not right now. Premiere is pretty easy and kind free if your have the subscription

This is very helpful. I am a huge fan of 3D VR, going back 13+ years. However, some experts are saying that there is no user interest in 3D and most viewers prefer 360/2D because using an HMD is not mandatory with 360 and you can use your laptop or smartphone. To appreciate 3D, the viewer needs to wear a headset which many are reluctant to do. Do you agree with this comment from these experts? Thanks again for all your work.
@hughhou
@hughhou 4 жыл бұрын
First, are they real experts? I won't call myself expert in 360VR industry b/c the industry is only like 6 years old? I am one of the OG guy been creating content in the space. Many people copy my style along the way and have some great success - prob even way more than me. Here is how you approach the question - creating VR is a lot harder than 360 - lots of "experts" simply just don't know how. So by lack of knowledge, they talk down the entire industry which is where the future is heading. Oculus Quest sold out again. More headset is coming into the market and 5G network make delivery over the net possible. Yes 360 get more views and can be view in mobile no doubt about it. But VR has immersion like never before for storytelling. Have those "experts" won any international film award with their VR piece? Make people cry in a VR headset and pull viewers heart string? Have they made any lasting impact and using VR for good (or bad like scary VR movie)? Have they work with clients like Google / Facebook / Intel / World Bank / BMW or other bigger bands that are ordering their VR experience? Virtual Reality is a movement and it is slowly become consumer friendly - we as storytellers are at the edge of revolution. Some will stay behind and become irreverent - some will leap forward and face the risk and unknown. Yes there is no saying VR will survive as an industry. It can go under just like 3D but it can be just like mobile phone or KZbin, the next big thing. Think about how many people making fun of KZbin content creators 10 years ago?

Hi Hugh, you are saving me many headaches. Thank you so so much for your hard work. During my editing I noticed that putting the Convergence to 250, my text or 3d elements tend to break in some points. For example a straight line creates a step and then continues. Watching carefully your video, I noticed that this happens on your text too. Did you or someone found a solution to this issue? If I keep the Convergence to the default value of 1.5 it solves the problem but it gets me cross eyes even if the object is clearly in the foreground when looking in the 3d view. I hope my problem is clear enough. Thank you!

If not, can you please share advice? Thank you!!

This one kinda show it - it is basic image removal - you can just remove the tripod as shown here with the Mic. Or you can use the image insert workflow but instead of a 3D TEXT , you insert just a flat 3D plate and position it on the leg. Same idea

A question Sir Hugh regarding 360 3D, 6400x6400 files shot with the Insta360 Pro; why does Davinci Resolve 16 display my mp4 H.264 video files stitched using Insta360 Stitcher as being only 29.97 when I used optical flow interpolation in Stitcher to make them 59.94? VLC and Windows File Explorer say the files are 59.94, but MediaInfo lists a Frame Rate of 59.97 and an "original frame rate" of 29.97. Who is right? Will this make the frame rate in my final edited project in Resolve only 29.97? A big thanks and I love your videos!

Yes. VR360 is easier - so just take out all the crop and resize and extra steps on this video - Resolve Fusion natively support 360VR. I am working on a more indepth and more difficult tutorial focus on VR360 to cover things that I did not cover in the pervious 3 tutorials - but will take me a while to finish them. Hugh, thank you very much for this video. I am using an Insta360 EVO and full Resolve, and trying to make a demonstration of an Altair 8800 computer. The settings you provided seemed to work well. The one tricky thing is getting the 3D text right. On my first attempt, the text was almost unreadable because of double vision. I thought that maybe it was a size vs distance issue, and made the text smaller but brought it in closer. It seemed to get better, but I am still getting some double vision on the 'ter' in Computer. Do you think it's just a mismatch between my 3D video and the 3D text orientation/sizing? I was also wondering if you would know how to insert some captured video in the scene. I would like to show a close-up of my computer screen on a large inserted 3D screen. Should I replace Text3D1 in fusion with MediaIn from my captured desktop footage? Hugh thanks a lot for these videos. Super useful, professional and at times also very entertaining. I have been experimenting with Resolve 16 having no experience with video editing other than the GoPro Quik app. With your videos I'm getting up to speed quickly and just ordered the license version (just before I saw your recommendation to get the dongle - oops, is Fusion 16 different from Resolve Fusion?). Where I am getting stuck is getting to appear text as flat in my 360 video. It still has that curve that you don't like either in the final video. Around the 18:17 mark in your video the 3D renderer is showing your text bent the other way around to compensate for the spherical effect. I am probably missing a setting, but I've created all the same nodes and my 3D render of the text still looks as normal text that will be messed up in 360 spherical view. Any help on what I am missing would be highly appreciated.

Interesting. Did the tutorial but resolve fell over on the final render; my data was from a Vuze XR via ProRes btw. I had to remove motion blur since my machine (although built for mathematical modelling, FEA) would have taken hours to do a render of just a few minutes. The animation of text reminded me of Flash animation, back in the day. Nonetheless, this is interesting and inspiring stuff. If it looks like VR is taking off, and the Quest 2 (with, I hate too say this, Facebook) may just make that happen; if and when this starts to happen, I'll get into this big style and build a machine accordingly. In the meantime, I aim to get acquainted with the 3D 180° (not bothered about 360°) VR.

I tried to repeat all the actions for you, but in the middle I got confused, because my image did not quite repeat yours. I’ll understand, but I’m afraid that for a long time I won’t be able to do anything without your prompting.

If you are good with Premiere stay with Premiere - this provide pretty advanced alternative to do thing that Premiere can not do. What I will do is still edit in Premiere and when you have complicated insert like what I show here or you need to remove object in 180 - use Resolve as I show here. Use the best of both world. You can still stay in Premiere to do most of the work. To others, Premiere is just too expensive.

at 31:9 I noticed the vertical pillars on the building on the pillars are wavey/wobbly, same with some of the horizontals. Check the white flag pole also. Do you know what is causing this? In fact I have not seen a 180 VR stereoscopic video that does not display this behaviour. DEO VR does exactly the same thing, but looks fine in premiere or other offline viewers

Yes - the problem of side by side setup - as corner a bended and unbended during stitching. Lens characteristic might reduce that error - but if you want that gone completely - using a circle rig like Insta360 Pro 2 and your only option. Not many people notice this problem but it is there.

Unfortunately - that is only on paid version (most 3D does in the new update). The alternative is trying Adobe Premiere and After Effects (which is free for 3 months now) or Boris FX which is also not free. I think Adobe would be your best bet. And other solution is get Fusion 9 (not 16) - most of the stuffs teach on this tutorial work on standalone Fusion 9. Fusion 9 should be free before Blackmagic buy them.

the big question here, with DaVinci, do u still need mistika VR to import footage from custom VR rigs? Mistika have now changed their payment plan so you need their professional version for simple VR180 editing and exporting. So, here in Canada we're talking about $1100 each and every year forever. I would gladly make a one time payment but recurring payments that are 3 times more than the entire Adobe Suite is outrageous :( Is there still no program available that does what mistika does?? Thanks and love your vids!

VR180 what camera? Most of the VR180 camera you do not need Mistika VR. You can actually calibrate stereo lens with Fusion - there is a macro for it - just not for VR180 yet. I am learning it myself as well - Fusion 3D engine is powerful but also ridiculously complicated. But if I can figure it out, I will share. Now I am on some big VR project on Premiere pipeline. Far as I can tell what you do in this video cannot be followed along with in the free version of Davinci. Which has led to an incredibly frustrating night for me as I found this video difficult enough to follow as is without things not working like you show. For example - The spherical camera nodes only option is mono - it will not allow me to select anything else in the drop down menu. In the renderer3d1 node if I try to select anything other than Mono for the "eye" value it tells me I have reached the limitation of the free version. Same thing if I try to add a splitter or combiner which is around where I gave up as it's not possible. So after several hours of now wasted time thats about as far as I got and that makes me an angry panda. Thanks for effort but I'd prefer less jokes and glitz and more accurate info - far as I can tell this is a fail and I'm afraid gets a thumbs down from me.
