About the camera angles, I wanted to add that the fixed camera heavily added to the feeling of the characters being watched/stalked. A lot of them are set up as if we're the creature/"psycho killer" peeking at them from behind corners or trees and I love when horror media does that.

Not a big of fan of Until Dawn so take it for what it is: fixed camera angles absolutely work in creating an eerie atmosphere. You can see that in most classic horror games. However, the big issue here is that fixed camera angles only work with a tank control scheme which is something that, to my knowledge, the original does not have. And thus, it suffers because fixed camera angles just do not work with a regular control scheme, which makes you accidentally move your character in the wrong direction once the camera changes. The over the shoulder fixes that gameplay issue. However it loses on atmosphere. The remake should have simply added a clean, polished tank control scheme and that was it. Hell, even the original should have gotten a tank control scheme update.

If it isn’t broke, DON’T fix it. I’m so tired of remakes viewing every original choice as a mistake and feeling the need to “fix” them. The score, the color palette, the dynamic camera angles, the overall sound design-these were all INTENTIONAL decisions that were integral to the overall experience. Altering them alters the very identity of the game. And why? Why did we need to change the Wendigo’s screech? Why did we need to completely overhaul the iconic score? Why did we need to get rid of “O’ Death” in the title sequence, when it’s practically become the Until Dawn theme song? I was down for a little upgrade of this game, even if it wasn’t necessary, but my god, they should’ve left well enough alone.

This is how I feel about Mass Effect Legendary Edition. I'm happy that so many new people were introduced to Mass Effect, one of the greatest RPGs (games) of all-time... but it's so clear that the team that made the remake didn't make the original, and thus didn't understand so many creative decisions. And they just ran roughshod over all those decisions, clumsily going "oh, this is cooler" and breaking things.

A good number of remasters and remakes just don't get it. The only time something should be removed is if it really does not work and you fail to find a good replacement. Otherwise, just leave it alone. Instead of using this very basic logic, they cannot leave any stone left unturned for some reason, changing stuff for the sake of "justifying the price tag".

It was memorable for so many reasons and the remake took away elements that made it a classic in the first place.

I can excuse a LOT for the remake, truly I can, but the thing that makes me the most angry is the change to Sam's character. Having her sit on the couch alone and not actively look for Hannah to prevent the prank DRASTICALLY changes her personality. The game calling her "brave" is now ironic instead of genuine. She succumbs to peer pressure and lets them do that to her BEST FRIEND and warns her only after she's been humiliated. OG Sam tried to stop it, actively went looking around the lodge for Hannah and wanted to keep her from participating. Knowing Hayden came back for the new end scene, I would have tried getting Hannah's actress back and actually have Sam try to talk Hannah out of it, ending with Hannah not believing her and going anyway. It would add to both characters, make Hannah less innocent and Sam more so. Instead, they change Sam from a good friend who got there too late to a participant by inaction. Getting the twins' actress back would also be beneficial to get more transformation scenes as Hannah (like an addition to the Events of the Past you get if you collect all the hunger totems) and more footage for Beth. I wanted to get to know Beth more, hear her opinions on people, learn about her personality. I was so sad to find that we couldn't explore her bedroom in the remake as it is the PERFECT new location to add with more collectibles. I appreciate a lot of the new visuals and I'm glad more people can play it on different platforms, but I still think the original is better.

You're absolutely correct on all points. Personally the horrendous lighting and removal of the fixed camera angles in the remake are what disappointed me the most. In their quest to make the game "more realistic", they stripped away the game's cinematic qualities and visual identity. The original had a clear and distinctive visual identity that was consistent throughout the game that clearly was paying homage to horror cinema. The remake strips all this away, resulting in a game that looks wildly inconsistent, from half the scenes being too dark to even see and appreciate what's going on, to the others varying so wildly that it's hard to belive they're all from the same game. For example, the money shots of Handigo at the end if the game were just abysmal in the remake compared to the original - they removed all of the stylistic lighting from the scene in favor of realism, so you can barely even see what's going on half of the time, and even when you can the scenes still look far less detailed and impressive compared to the original. It doesn't matter how much they improve the graphical fidelity of the models and environments if they can't even be seen half the time. While modders should be able to fully restore the soundtrack and sound effects of the original game, fixing the lighting and restoring the fixed camera angles will likely prove far more difficult, assuming it's even possible at all. Guess we'll just have to wait and see. At least we'll always have the original 😅

I recently watched someone play the Remake and all the comments were trashing the new soundtrack. As someone who never played Until Dawn (Only watched videos when it first came out, going back whenever I feel a horror itch like going back to watch a familiar horror movie when you're in the mood), I was confused. Like, I was also missing O'Death, but the comments were talking about the rest of the music in the game and not just O'Death. It sounded fine to me. But hearing it back to back as you showed... My geez, that was definitely a downgrade. It's hard to appreciate just how much the music is neutered unless you really hear it back to back (For those of us that aren't as familiar with the original's music). I figured I wasn't as creeped out when watching the remake because I was already familiar with the story. Nope. Definitely the music. As for the changes to the Wendigo screeches, it sounded like they removed the "echo-y" sound from the original to make it maybe more like an animal screech? Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the characters originally confuse the wendigos for animals at first? That's the only reason I can see for them messing with the perfect monster sound. With Ashley, just... Hate that change. Her being that level of petty made her more interesting as a character. I love to hate Ashley and I'm an Emily apologist. As for the Josh ending, that's really just the best thing out of this. Josh really didn't deserve the endings he got in the original. Even if you hate Josh, his actions really just come back around to: "It was just a prank, Han!" His prank was meant to mirror the prank against Hannah. Something that was "stupid fun" mixed with a little bit of "petty revenge" against a perceived slight. The prank against Hannah unintentionally led to the deaths of Hannah and Beth, just as Josh's prank unintentionally can lead to the deaths of all his friends (Assuming Hannah wendigo wouldn't have tried picking them off one by one anyway). In Josh's mind, no one would actually get hurt, they'd just be scared. Sure, he doesn't have the mental capacity to understand that he is putting them through massive trauma, but he's viewing it like a horror movie. And horror movies are fun, ya know? Chris is his bro, so Chris would obviously love to star in his own horror movie. Pair him up with Ashley because Chris has a crush on Ashley. Make Sam the damsel in distress "final girl" because she's hot and Josh maybe has a thing for her. We don't get to see what his plans were for Emily/Matt and Mike/Jessica because everything goes wrong on their ends for reasons unrelated to Josh. Emily and Matt were SUPPOSED to come back to the lodge, but they never did, so Josh never had a chance to kidnap them. And I can see Jessica and Mike's "punishment" for the prank boiling down to being exiled to the ratty old cabin without heating other than the fireplace and not being allowed to star in Josh's super awesome gonna make 'em all famous horror movie. I might be a Josh apologist too.

My theory is that Sony wanted to capitalize on the RE remake style (over the shoulder) and GoW reboots (over the shoulder) and they gave this remake project to a bunch of rookies and interns that are now working at the studio. That or the devs had like 5 months to make this. There's a crippling lack of narrative understanding and media literacy in the creative fields right now. It seems nobody understand why certain choices are made for an art piece. It's treated either like utter mystery, or the understanding is surface level. It's about iconography. Like, there are many Star Wars fans who think you can't have Star Wars without lightsabers. This leads to the devs of the remake: I think they are talented devs, but they absolutely did not understand any of the artistic choices made. They instead wanted to do "their take", but their take is a shallow misinterpretation. It's like they're trying to do things for the sake of it, rather than having some sort of a vision or a vibe.

The music/sound change is probably the worst part of the remake for me. The original was soooo much more unsettling, creepy and flowed perfectly in every part. Just goes to show you can’t improve what’s already great!

The only thing I don't like about until dawn, is that the final act isn't as flexible. It only depend on two characters (Sam and Mike), and those two characters also can only die at the end, with one of them (Mike) even depend on the other to survive. If there's something to fix about Until Dawn is probably that, and maybe give Jess more scene to play, and then leave everything else alone.

My family member recently watched a lets play of Until Dawn remake and while they liked it, they were not really scared by the experience. I think with the original they also would hold a similar opinion about its jump scares, but like you pointed out, the tension in those scenes work much better and create a really unnerving atmosphere. It was still fun to hear about their opinion, but I wish they experienced the original instead because I think they would be more impacted by it.

Regarding the sound design and soundtrack, I think you make excellent points. An important factor about the horror genre is that it's an (and apologies if this isn't the correct word for it, I've only ever heard it from Norwegian) is that it's text external, meaning that it's defined by getting a specific reaction from the audience, which in this case would be having them be scared. This, of course, makes horror such a diverse genre with a lot of sub-genres. The sound design is so important for this, because it tells you _how_ to feel about what you're seeing. In movies such as _Us_ or _Midsommar_ , there is stuff happening during daylight, and in a non-horror movie, one wouldn't bat an eye at any of the locations or what was happening. But with an eerie soundtrack, the audience starts feeling uneasy even though there's nothing visual on screen that should make you feel uneasy. In the examples you showed, the removal of the tense music truly does ruin a lot of the feeling one is supposed to have in those moments

This feels like when Atlus made the emulator port for Persona 3 available on game pass and steam and everyone collectively hated it for being lazily pieced together with the sound quality actively being worse than the original game. Except when that happened everyone excused it, hoping a full remake was on the way. And it delivered on all fronts. Wish that this remake would have done the same
@justmundane6 күн бұрын
Honestly P3R has a lot of the same issues that the Until Dawn remake has and I wouldn't say it delivered on all fronts. It simplified the gameplay style from the original to make it easy and like P5, lighting in certain scenes was bad which changed the tone of important scenes (especially in the dorm) toned down a lot of artistic choices and sensitized/censored them like the shadow makoto scene or even making important scenes that were animated in FES 3d in P3R which lessened the impact. I would actually be content with all these issues if P3F was available on modern platforms so everyone is able to experience it, but it isn't and Reload is clearly trying to replace it, so it just makes it more problematic.

The one scene I wish had the most improvements was the scene when Sam and Mike open the door to where Josh is at the end and the water rushes through with the heads of their friends and the flamethrower guy. The scene never changed depending on whose bodies were actually present in the scene. If you had everyone still alive then Sam and Mike would react the same way seeing the random guy they met less than an hour ago then they would seeing their friends of years decapitated and hanging from the ceiling.. If I remember correctly the remake took away Sam's initial reaction where she would move her head and eyes to look at ''all'' the heads floating out the door despite on my first playthrough having only the flamethrower guy. Its the one scene in the original they really took me out of the action and kind of spoiled the ending. It felt like it was canonical to have all the heads float out. Just a weird thing but still bugs me to this day 😂

the remake happened too soon, ff7 and the older re's make sense to me because of being on older consoles that people can't get easily with "outdated" controls and emulators can only go so far depending on how they were ported (they did not need to make ff7 3 games tho remake felt hella dragged out at times) until dawn's graphics age so well which is really hard for games that try to look realistic and I'm sorry but why am I gonna drop $75 on the shinier version when I can find the original at gamestop for $18. if it was just made to get hype for until dawn 2 then they should of just done until dawn 2, they could of still had josh be alive and make it a mystery on how he lived for players (like if he was found before he fully turned or something idk)

To me the remake felt a bit like the rerelease of the OG Star Wars triology, where they edited new things in. It's completely enjoyable on it's own but it's very clear it was made after the original and somehow feels specifically because they tried to improve it. Another example is the Ghost in the Shell 2.0 release. It just isn't the same and the original feels like it was made within it's own limits in mind, therefore coming up with creative solutions making it look the best, while the remake is not.

Almost everything in the story additions segment that you complimented was bad. The prank scene was like something out of Bollywood, and the fate of Josh was vital to the game's significance; the moment to save Josh through choices and actions occurred before the game began.

Another problem with the opening credits/song is that they put it after the first session with Dr. Hill, instead of after Hannah and Beth fall. Having "O Death" play while the players are processing what just happened does so much to set the tone and build hype for the rest of the game. Going from the fall to "you can't change what happened last year" kills the momentum.

My biggest gripe of the remake was the soundtack, expecially as a music person. The second i loaded up the game and found out that o' death was gone, I was heartbroken. The downgrade of the soundrack litterally hurt my soul. I may be biased since im an orchestra kid, and grew up on string instruments, but i whole heatedly believe that the og soundtrack that relied heavily on string instruments, drums, and deep horns fit insainely good with the vibe of until dawn. The new soundrack sounds like it was designed for a generic up and comming horror movie. The interrogation scene with the new music was weird since some outcomes have mike talking about how he shot Emily with the bass dropping in the background. Its just all weird and unfitting. I also want to talk about the ambiance in the begining of the game where Chris is searching for the deodorant can. In the original i felt so terrified while looking through the lodge. There were whispers and it was such an ominous vibe. The ambiance in the remake with that scene is so unscary compared to the orginal its almost laughable. I just end up forgeting im in a scarey game at all and start looking for all the clues during that time. Its not as immersive as the original. And then the sound effects! When matt had a flashack to mike and em i was litterally ctfu with how dramatic that flashback sound was compared to the actual situation. As the game kept going on, i felt more and more less immersed. Dont even get me started on how goofy that psycho punch sound effect was.

The loss off fixed camera angles looks like cost cutting to me. As it is a lot of work to find the right angle in every "scene". Same goes for the soundtrack the comparisons you showed make the remake seem less dynamic (using less instruments). The missing sound effects also make it feel rushed. That is just my two cents

Ballistic Moon/Sony 100% remade this because of, in the eyes of the pulblic Until Dawn will always be Supermassives. For a Playstation exclusive, no one really says it's a sony product but rather a game made by Supermassive only funded by Sony (which is objectively true) Sony/Ballistic Moon: Removed all of Supermassive's music, removed tons of different interactions, redid mostly of all the dialogue, and completely shifted the entire aesthetic of the game into their *own*. With the nail in the coffin being them removing ALL of Supermassive's credit from the original game (which is something every remake is being called out for now recently) They wanted it to be a "Sony" game not a "Supermassive" game anymore, and they failed extremely hard

Im also sick of remakes, and ive been disappointed that so many games this generation have been remakes ...HOWEVER, and this js not me defending corpos, besides tje obvious reason (money) i think from a developer standpoint, remakes tend to take less time to make currently compared to regular games at the moment, i don't know how long this remake took, but the last of us remake took about one year to make, and part 2 took 7 years ro make, i think a part of the problem is modern games extremely long development times and crunch, whereas when you remake a game you're essentially copying someome elses or even your own older work and just redoing it for modern hardware, you're not starting from scratch like you are with development for a new game, therefore it takes less time to make. Im not defending the onslaught of remakes lately but i do think there's a more labour related reason to them besides just "haha money im going to make these gamers buy this game TWICE AHAHAHAHAHA"! even though that is the point on the business side of things
@thechugg437216 күн бұрын
Another thing you have to take into account with remakes is that they almost always dumb them down so it takes EVEN LESS TIME to make. For example the fixed camera angles in Until Dawn, it's a PAIN making good fixed camera angles, it takes a lot of time and artistry. Slapping an over the shoulder camera is wayyyy easier and faster to optimize dev time.

EDIT: By the way... when the development team says something on the lines of: "We did this to get the remake it's own identity"... the translation to that is: "We hated the original and are changing it, cause F You." Alternatively, it could also be (if using a new engine, which they are): "We have no clue how to do the stuff we did in this engine architecture so we had to do workarounds/changes" I feel this is either a Mix of the two or the former. ================== Yet another example that "Remakes" and "Remasters" are more "Demakes" and "Demasters"... half-effprt, creatively bankrupt cash grabs because nothing new they make is good or they can't make anything new to begin with (or both). This industry is such a clown show...you can tell people who don't love video games run it at this stage.

I can not call myself a die-hard Until Dawn fan, so you could probably brush my opinion aside, but I kinda loved the remake. Since I haven't had a PS4 back in 2014, I was limited to KZbin playthroughs, and I liked the game and the plot. After that I kinda forgot about the game (except the O Death song, that has been added to the playlist ever since) and just yesterday played it on PC. I didn't even know it was a remake until I noticed new things in prologue. I think the remake is good at returning you to the same plot you distantly remember, it just felt really natural, like I was playing that same game that had been released back in 2014. Maybe in some sort of direct comparison, remake has several downslides, but I still admire the work that had been done. Fixed camera is good, but feels outdated. Evening setting for first chapter is a better choice imo. The only unforgivable crime is removing O Death ofc.

I agree with most of the points, especially the audio changes. However, I actually dislike the change they made to Ashley’s involvement in Chris’ death. I feel that giving Ashley this dark scene where the events of the evening finally make her snap made her one of the more interesting characters. Yes, it’s petty on her part, but it makes sense for her given her behaviors leading up to it. Ashley constantly fought with Chris about not wanting to venture further and how scared she was. Chris was always the moral compass leading them deeper into the hotel in search of Sam. I think in the same way that we all love Mike for the changes his character went through over the course of the evening, Ashley should have been allowed to keep the original sequence in which she kind of goes through the opposite development from Mike. She gives into her fear and turns on those around her. So much more interesting and nuanced in my opinion
