I learned the Berklee program from my piano teacher years ago, and I am always looking for more information on actual application of this knowledge I have. I always struggled using this info because it was taught through the jazz lens which i never write and for whatever reason I have always had issues with the application process. I found your channel a day ago and I have to say you guys may be the best teachers I have ever seen on the internet for applying and using music theory. I saw you for the first time at Warp Academy and went through the „music hacking course“ already a while ago. It was just awesome and I learned so much in such a short amount of time. So thank you for presenting „music theory“ in such a fresh way. Hi, Revolution Harmony. I have watched a few videos and now am back to the start of this series to catch as much as possible. I don't often comment on KZbin, but just wanted to say how much I've appreciated what I'm finding on your channel. As a classically trained musician who has spent the majority of my music career post college producing in my bedroom, your approach is refreshing. I usually find music production videos too shallow and tasteless, while the classical or "serious" community does not share my same interests. Thank you for assuming the intelligence of your audience while being down to earth.
@HackMusicTheory

Wow!!! Thank you to infinity and beyond for your wonderfully kind comment, Kevin, that means everything to me, especially coming from a fellow classically trained musician! And yes indeed, I know that lonely place between the classical and popular worlds all too well, so it's a precious thing to find a friend there. That place has been my home for three decades... too classical for popular, and too popular for classical haha! On that note, you're one of the few people in the world who would appreciate the symphony I composed back in 2004. So, if you have a few spare minutes, check this out: revolutionharmony.com/album/263852 The classical world hated it cos it was too much like "three songs", and the popular world hated it cos, well, it was orchestral haha! Anyhoo, thank you sincerely once again for reaching out and connecting, it's lovely to meet you Kevin, and please stay in touch. Take care and talk soon. Ray :)

Thanks for getting back to me, Ray. It means a lot that you would. I'm listening to your symphony now and so far I think it's beautiful. I'd love to hear it performed by a full orchestra! The brass at 1 minute into II is powerful. Ever listen to Gavin Bryars, Max Richter, or Philip Glass (I'm sure you have)? Just a few to throw out there that I think bridge the gap between classical and contemporary. A chat over a beer or coffee would definitely be in order if we were close. If you'd like to check out some of my work, visit www.kevinscottdavis.net. I have recorded as Glowworm for years, and also played in Pacific UV. Cheers, Ray. I'll stay watching.

Hey hey Kevin, hope this finds you splendidly well. So sorry for my delayed reply, been non-stop here in the studio the past week. I had a listen to a few Glowworm songs, really beautiful work. I was trying to reply to some emails while listening, but it was too relaxing, so I had to stop and listen haha, so... thanks for the break! Thanks also for your kind words about my symphony, that means the world to me. And yes, I would love to hear it on real instruments too, though by the time I have the money to make that a reality, I'll have written another symphony haha! Yeah, Max Richter is one of my favourites, and I dig some Glass pieces too, though I haven't heard of Gavin Bryars, so I'll check him out, thanks for the recommendation. Where are you based? Would love a tea and a chat one day for sure, and who knows, maybe even a collaboration too, if we can make schedules work. That would be super fun! By the way, if you have a few spare minutes, check out this project of mine: RevolutionHarmony.com/album/90103 You're one of the only people I think would appreciate it, as it's kinda impossible to throw in a genre, which means most people hate it haha! Hi Ray! Sorry for the delay in my reply. This is really the first back and forth I've had on KZbin (I need to do it more). It's so nice of you to take the time to listen to my stuff and for writing me back. I'm about halfway through listening to Cre8athon tonight and I think your'e absolutely right about how hard it is to pin to a genre, though i've really enjoyed it. I'd take that as a complete compliment. We are all bogged down with trying to sound like our influences. Sounding like yourself is a sign of maturity. Anyway, dude, maybe this is not the place for it, but I'd love to continue talking. The idea of collaborating is exciting, to me. It's completely opened up my world! On next pay day I'll be buying the books! I'm not a real musician per-se, but I do like to dabble but hadn't written anything for around 7 years until this channel inspired me to go back and have a go! The only downside is that I started working on the track before watching the chord progression video, but after the bass video. The upshot of which is that the bass is the best bit of it! Going to stick with it and do the learning and for the next project actually pick a key and mode (once I learn what a mode is!). Don't know if this counts as spam, but if you are morbidly curious, the track (which is still work in progress) can be found here: soundcloud.com/robp-musicbox/the-never-happen-period . Still can't believe that I managed to do the bass! Once again - thank you for a great channel!

The Songwriting & Producing PDF builds on Part 1, and will have you understanding and using modes in no time :) Thank you in advance for supporting us by buying our books, we so appreciate it. I had a listen to your song, thanks for sharing, and yes I can totally tell that you've worked your magic on the bass line, super cool! I see that you're from Bristol, is that correct? Hey hey David! Thanks big time for watching and connecting, we truly appreciate your interest in Hack Music Theory, and we're pumped to have you in our revolution! So, because changing from verses to choruses can only be taught in the context of a whole song, it's a far more time-consuming topic, and therefore the video would be way too long (analytics show that people don't watch long videos on KZbin). But, this is exactly why we launched our online apprenticeship program. In it, our apprentices watch behind-the-scenes videos from our studio sessions where we write songs from start to finish, and teach all the theory along the way. They gain insights into every step of the songwriting process and learn our most advanced hacks, including how to change from a verse chord progression into a chorus chord progression. We also do live Q&A sessions every month to answer questions about the process. If this sounds like it would be helpful to you, then you can find out more and sign up to our apprenticeship program over on Patreon, here: www.Patreon.com/RevolutionHarmony (select Artist tier). We'd love to see you behind the scenes! Thanks again for your interest in Hack Music Theory, and until next time, take care and happy songwriting! Kate :)

Hack Music Theory Thank you. I try to do a bit of everything. Just depends on what I’m feeling for the day, or whatever comes shooting out of my brain. Haha. I have a very long line of musicians and music lovers in my family. So it’s kinda like a disease for me. Only problem for has actually been doing this more systematically, instead of just playing by what I’m hearing in my head. But I’ve taken classes etc...COULDN’T EVEN SIT DOWN TO COMPLETE them cause they were JUST SO DAMN BORING!..lol but since watching your videos I seem to have just taken ten musical leaps ahead. All the bits an pieces of knowledge some to now how a glue and direction.

Hola María, gracias por compartir! Where are you in Perú? I lived in Piura for three months and visited a few other cities, so I have a soft spot for your country! That's awesome that you are dedicated to learning the language of music, it is the only way to say what you want to say musically. Dorian is one of our favourite modes and writing out the scales and chords is awesome practice! If I may make a suggestion, I think you would find our "Hack Music Theory for Songwriting and Producing" PDF very helpful. It clearly explains the modes and how to use them to write songs with different 'vibes'. It also has a wealth of other hacks which include how to write chord progressions, bass lines, synth riffs, etc. You can download it from our website here: RevolutionHarmony.com/Books. Thank you for your support María, we're thrilled to welcome you into our Hack Music Theory revolution! Please keep in touch and let us know how you get along with your compositions. Im from Johannesburg. I love music in general, except for jazz but very fond of dance music :) I have a question for you. Im not sure if you explain this in your music theory hack books. How does one understand punctuation in music and how do you achieve it? Lots of classical theory books explain that music is a language which involves punctuation but never seem to explain how to achieve it or explain what that really is.
