Actually a lot of positional moves get played with 0 calc if you KNOW that there are no tactics in the position worth checking but if you are not that strong its advisable that you test out every move with great caution

I think it's crazy how quickly you recognize the material difference. It's maybe a weird take away from this video but man I have no clue how you see you're down in exchange in less than a second. It takes me at least 5-10 seconds to look through the position and count it all up lol
@MrJustin-MiniLessons
@MrJustin-MiniLessons 7 ай бұрын
One trick is just to count the pieces, without noticing what they are (pieces being knights, bishops and rooks, in this case, since that's where the material imbalance usually lies). Then, if # of pieces are equal but side A has one rook and side B has 2, then it is clear that side A is down an exchange. At least that's how I usually do it, at a glance. :)

At around Puzzle 40 Danya saying ‘I should notice that 9 moves down the road I have checkmate’ like its as simple as 2+2=4… is basically like me looking at my cat and saying he should explain quantum physics to me. Its just not gonna happen bro. But i love your faith in us :)
@animeup1412
@animeup1412 7 ай бұрын
Not really, you don't look at the position and see checkmate in 9 in an instant. It's just that you look for forcing moves which your opponent has to react to, and rule out the other moves via calculating a bit afterwards and pattern recognition. Almost all of the puzzles where pretty easily solvable for me, and I'm not even a titled player. You'll get there eventually just by playing a lot and maybe watching someone like Danya once in a while, trust me. :D

28:32 is spot on that 53-54 onwards is a lot more calculation and less simple to explain. My current survival personal best is 54. I need to practice my calculation some more. I can calculate when I need to, but a lot of the time I navigate highly by intuition and at these higher puzzles, it really just becomes a matter of exact calculating ability.

I'm an average intermediate player with a puzzle rush survival best of 46. I find once you get to 40, things get very tough. Be interesting to know how 'most people' really score on average.

Has anyone seen Encino Man? It's a movie where a couple of knuckleheads thaw out a caveman and explain the 80s to him. Hilarity ensues. Daniel's video is like if I found Encino Man and as soon as he had thawed out, I placed him in front of a computer, opened up an "adult" film site and then started explaining exactly what was going to happen based on the thumbnails. He wouldn't even know what a washing machine is, let alone the implication of a loved one being stuck in one.

Twitch didn't sound interesting until now. Danya, when do you stream on Twitch? In your 1 hr KZbin videos that come out once every few days, every so often you let it slip, "it's late, it's been a 6-hour stream..." what??!! Yet here on KZbin, we are busy refreshing KZbin every hour hoping that you have posted a thirty minute clip..." if it makes it on KZbin". It's decided. I'm reactivating my Twitch for one reason and one reason only: to have greater access to Danya's Chess University - The GOAT online chess University.

Daniel i would like to hear your consideration on a rule. I always find all chess rules really logic, even tho there is one that intuitively i always miss to spot: the fact that a piece pinned to your king can contribute do deliver checkmate to the other king. I see the point on that; still my unconscious can't grasp that and a part of me thinks it's the least "solid" chess rule and, in "another of the possible worlds", this rule could be illegal or lead to a draw. Am i tripping too much? Am i the only one struggling to figure that rule out?
@mouriran3906
@mouriran3906 7 ай бұрын
Not Danya. But, here's my answer. I think you are seeing the win condition in chess as somehow killing/capturing the king. Hence, you are feeling strange that a pinned piece can't capture and a pinned piece can contribute to checkmate by covering an escape square or by protecting the checked piece. But the win condition is to check the king and not let it escape to any square. Metaphorically, it can be similar to capturing the king by a net.
@Talos4444
@Talos4444 7 ай бұрын
@@mouriran3906 thanks a lot, i am trying to learn it. Because intuitively i always miss it. The checkmate net makes a lot of sense. In my mind, even tho it's not how it ends, i always immagine the bishop in this case travelling square where the king is to "kill" him; so it makes sense that it's a draw, even tho it also makes sense that the piece who pinned the bishop, after his king dies, does have no interest to checkmate enemy king. But still it's a rule i believe it's not necessary in a strong form, i can immagine in a parallele universe the same chess game with same rules but just this difference

Would you have advice about translating tactics learned from puzzles into regular gameplay? I love puzzles and tactics have reached a 2700 puzzle rating so far. but when I play regular games, i frequently have blind spots that cause me to miss or blunder, and I have been kind of stuck at only 1200 rapid rating for a little while now. I feel I have the ability to play at close to the 1600-2000 rating sort of gameplay when I play good games, but that is not consistent, and the losses from my bad games keeps my rating where it is. is there anything I can focus on to get better at not making mistakes so often and falling into the habit playing moves without properly thinking about them?

You're more likely to succeed with the attitude of "I can do this". Obviously Naroditsky can do it quicker than we can. It's worth noticing the things he notices. What's the material? If we're way down, probably have to find mate. Does the opponent have dangerous threats? Which pieces are looking at what other pieces? By vocalising the most significant thoughts, you get to see that he doesn't just insta-see the solution.
