and I have to do this a lot more in competitions as my pony can't consentrate with everything happening around him 😹 another explenation would be to slow down without changing tempo , trainers use it a lot in jumping as well😹

half halt = adjustment

so half halt would mean just awareness of your horse and small corrections to how they move and the "half halt!" would mean to be more aware? do you use any specific aids before eg. making a transition? or do you just start doing small corrections and that gets the attention?

Great question here! Half halt - yes, very loosely it is being more aware. But it is actually physical adjustments. When your horse is younger, the adjustments might be centimeters - the left shoulder might be way out and the right hind leg is drifting miles in - so your half halt adjustments might be to make fairly large significant changes. As you go up through the training scale, the half halt adjustments are still there, the adjustments are just much, much smaller - even microscopic adjustments of the shoulder. By simply riding an 'invisible half pass' - that means you are in a pirouette line and you feel like the horse's ribcage is every so slightly big - we don't visibly bend the horse, but for our own riding you pretend like you are about to ride half pass, and the way that adjusts the body and makes the horse sit better, can make the horse go from a 6 pirouette to a 9 pirouette just like that. There is so much more depth of knowledge required here, and this is what people get wrong. Dressage is not an x + y = z, it is an understanding, a working knowledge of the dressage training scale - and if you understand the dressage training scale, these questions don't arise. my horse falls in round corners at canter....I .must tighten the girth in future.. my horse wont stay still at halt...I must not ride him on a bouncy castle or ice rink
