Excellent, thank you! I have been studying French for years and have wondered about this. Also thanks for your slow and careful pronunciation. It sounds really good and really does help one hear the accent and how words are formed. Merci beaucoup and may all good things come back to you! 🇫🇷🇺🇸

Hi Geraldine, i wish you explained the very first example. (Je suis toujours à la maison). When would it mean: I am "still" at home VS I am "always" at home? Wish you covered that 😞
@ZoltanOctoro
@ZoltanOctoro 3 жыл бұрын
I guess it comes from a translation issue. When I say "je suis encore à la maison" (lit.: I am "again" at home), I am referring to the fact that the situation hasn't changed yet, i.e. the situation just "repeats" itself - the situation doesn't change, it is AGAIN the same thing; hence why "encore". When it comes about "je suis toujours à la maison" (lit.: I am "always" at home), the problem is that, in English, the word "always" engages the past, the present, as well as the future. "I am always at home" would therefore mean that I used to be at home, I am at home, and I will be at home later on too. But in French, this "toujours" doesn't engage necessarily in future time, just past and present time; that is to say the situation, yet again, didn't evolve from earlier time, it is still the same - so, in this very case, we can also use the adverb "toujours" to mean this. Again, here, "toujours" doesn't engage on what will happen later, whereas the English "always" definitely does so. Hope that it will help :-)

@@ZoltanOctoro C’est bien expliqué, merci. Mais j’ai toujours une question: si quelqu’un veut me rendre visite, et il me demande, « quand est-ce que je peut passer chez toi? » et moi je réponds, « tu peux passer quand tu veux, moi, je suis toujours à la maison. ». Est-ce que c’est correct comme ça, pour indiquer que je ne sort presque jamais de la maison? Merci d’avance!
@ZoltanOctoro
@ZoltanOctoro 3 жыл бұрын
@@SuperManning11 Oui, ça se comprend très bien; et au pire, vous pouvez toujours ajouter quelque chose comme: "je suis toujours à la maison, je ne bouge jamais" pour mettre plus d'emphase. Je crois que, pour la traduction de "toujours" en "always", "ever" ou "still", c'est vraiment le contexte, la situation, qui permet de déterminer ce que cela veut dire. Et dans votre exemple, la situation se comprend très bien, donc il n'y a pas de soucis.

@2:25 Why did Geraldine remove the ne in je ne sais pas but she didn't omit it in "On ne sait jamais"? Is it an error?
@ZoltanOctoro
@ZoltanOctoro 3 жыл бұрын
Both are ok, it is just that orally speaking, we indeed drop the "ne" in the negation. But keeping it is nonetheless ok. (Actually, as a Frenchman, I didn't even notice it).

Excellent video - I notice many examples in this and other videos in this channel use the second person singular "tu" (rather than "vous") - the little bit of French I get to speak usually employs "vous" - as I do not want to risk being "overly familiar" - nobody in my family (and I am not a parent) speaks French - so it is really just with friends - but not close acquaintances - that I get to practise the French language.

The liaison between "pas" and "encore" is optional. It sounds more elegant and formal to do it, but French people usually don't do that liaison in everyday life.

Merci pour le vidéo, c'est très utile. Mais J'ai encore une question. Pourquoi pas on peut utiliser "encore" dans le phrase "Je sais pas s'il va pleuvoir, mais je vais toujours prendre un parapluie"? En Anglais on peut dit "I don't know if it's going to rain, but I'm *still* going to take my umbrella." Et "encore" est "still" en des autres cas.

Great video, but your "anchor" phonetic guide does not work if it is trying to help anglophone audiences. Anchor is pronounced Ann-core in most dialects of English. The English word anchor would only be pronounced like "encore" in French if said by someone with a French accent, like yourself for instance.
