#MavenPilot - So much to unpack! I've been looking more into Maven, since we last spoke. It's looking pretty good! A couple questions for you: 1. Do they have the ability to do orthomosaic maps with it? I haven't seen anything on their website aside from maybe doing a manual waypoint mission (kudos on your videos being on their site, btw!). 2. Are you able to (without touching the sticks) tap an icon to tell the drone to switch to a different position, during the track? The Mavic 3, for example, can be set to follow from the front and then can be switched by tapping a button around the person icon. 3. What kind of bike are you riding? I used to have a Triumph America and had some good rides out in San Bernadino County. Great stuff; thanks for sharing!

Thank you! Answers, as I understand your questions: 1. Ortho maps, in some fashion, are coming. There is a grid wizard option on the make new waypoint mission that is coming soon. I was pretty excited when the developer added my videos to his site! Thanks for noticing! 2. I am not aware of an option to reposition without using the stick but I can definitely see that being useful 3. My bike is an older, 2003 Honda Shadow ACE 750

@@WaddleAero I would LOVE the mapping option. I like Dronelink for that (they have a mission planner on the web, too, which is nice). But from what I’m seeing from your videos I like the look of Maven. I’ll do a video on the Mavic 3 follow-me function and point that out. I have a video (on the books) to do some obstacle avoidance on it. I’ve just been trying to get my Part 107 videos out, first. Your video has inspired me to bump that up the list. 😄 I was originally going to get a Shadow! It was between that and the Spirit but I ended up stumbling on the America and fell in love.

For Ortho Mapping just turn on the video camera and fly a rough grid pattern with 60% overlap, then use VLC to make interval shots from video (Or use interval Pics from Camera instead of video) then use ODM to process the data to make 3D Ortho maps and you can then measure volumes, build 3d models, contours, terrain maps etc. Darn, I just got my Mini 2 on the 16th and missed the draw. I'm really liking what I see with Maven and will be getting it soon. It will come in handy for Motorcycle Adventures on my Tenere 700 and other fun projects.

Since all of this is based on phone instrumentation and signal quality is there any difference in operation for any of the Maven app features between a Mavic Mini Gen 1 and Mavic Mini Gen 2 since the transmission types are different.

Losing GPS signal on the phone - those messages may be hard to see when riding a motorcycle. Wonder if the whole screen or a part of the screen could blink yellow or red or something, repeating until acknowledged to get one's attention. Thinking of mounting the two devices separately with a longer cable connecting - so controller could be rotated on the mount (using RAM ball and socket mounts) faced in the direction I expect the drone to be in and the phone would be facing me for monitoring. Have you had any more experience riding the bike and using Maven? If so, any issues we all should watch out for? Thanks for all these Maven videos !!!

Thank you for watching! I think the loss of signal had more to do with the location and geography than the controller orientation. There are hills to the north and high voltage power lines to the south. I have experienced gps signal issues in the area when flying from a stationary position. The biggest takeaway for me when riding is to make sure you are in open spaces without a lot of traffic. Additionally, and this is hard to do, you need to be more concerned about staying safe on the bike than about the drone. The mount I use is fairly easy to see. When I lost signal, I didn’t catch it for a while because I was focused on the bike. Safe flying and riding to you!

@@WaddleAero yeah, it is the phone gps that had issues, as you made clear. Realizing that a rider needs to be watching the road, I was thinking the app might send clearer and more easily discernible alerts that the rider could catch visually (audible to speaker inside helmet?). Easy to dream - more difficult to design and implement - especially with prioritized effort on an Android app development! Take care.

Can the relative height and distance be adjusted on the fly during follow me?

Thanks for watching! There is a difference between track and follow. “Follow Me” will follow you from behind, “Track Me” allows you to set a track angle or orbit while tracking you. In “Track Me” in know that both the relative altitude and follow distance can be adjusted on the fly. Move the right stick up to move closer and down to move father away. Use the left stick to raise or lower the altitude. I don’t off the top of my head if “Follow Me” has the same capability as “Track Me” but I would assume it does.

@@WaddleAeroI agree but it’s all about perception. I am not championing form over substance, but a more professional look would go a long way towards giving pilots confidence to buy it and fly it. For example, I spent a career translating ‘Chinese English’ and ‘Chinese Marketing Material’ in to ‘Proper English’ and I know how important this sort of thing can be when it comes to product acceptance and user confidence. Still, all things in their time. Maybe the developer will be able to focus on this aspect of the App in the future

I have had it track a 30 mph with no problem. The one time I had issues was when it was tracking with a direct 15-18mph crosswind. It did fine at lower speeds but had trouble maintaining lock if I sped up

#MavenPilot. But what I still don’t really understand, is the difference between the ‘follow me’- and the ‘track me’mode. I probably missed something? I’m dutch, maybe that’s why😉

With the follow me function the drone only performs forward and backward movements to maintain the selected distance, it does not make lateral movements and will follow you from behind. The pitch stick will change the relative distance. With Track Me active the drone not only maintains the set distance but it will also try to keep the angle between you and the drone, to do this, unlike the Follow Me, the drone moves in every direction effectively copying your every movement, this will allow you to be followed from any angle not just from behind. With Track Me active, you can use the roll stick to “select” a rotation speed, clockwise or counterclockwise. The drone will start orbiting around you. The pitch stick changes the tracking distance and consequently also the radius of the orbit.

Thank you. Have you updated the app to the latest version? I had this issue on my first attempt using the app, Mavic Air 2 - Maven Waypoint Mission First Attempt kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5_ReZdnmdtpipo. The developer recommended updating the app and rebooting my phone. Did that and have not had the problem since. If that doesn’t work, I would recommend reaching out to the developer at [e-mail] He is very good about responding to questions

One question: is it possible to zoom the camera before or in flight while I use the orbit/follow me function in the app. It will be nice if it does so as we have to fly at a safe altitude to avoid obstacles but if zoom is enabled we can get a closeup of the subject in the frame.

The Mini SE is on the list of supported drones. According to the MavenPilot.com website, “A device equipped with GPS is required for “follow / track me” functionality (note that iPads without cellular connection do not have GPS)” I am not sure if this means the device must be connected to cell service or must be CAPABLE of cell connection. I know WiFi only iPads do not have an internal gps.

Hello Waddle Aero, I tried Litchi-Hub today. It was not possible to export .csv files because I do not have the Litchi App. They request a logon from the phone app! A .kml file export for Google Earth Pro flight simulation is possible, but this cannot importet to the maven app. I tried a lot of .kml --> .csv converter, but I get always a format error from the maven app. When you make your video please attache a simple .cvs file to see the requested maven format. Thank you !

That is a good idea. I will drop the CSV into a Google Drive folder and put a link in the description. KML to CSV would not work. There are too many fields required for the mission execution that do not have a corresponding KML datapoint
