Great video. I remember when the D'Angelo album came out and playing behind the beat really came into the forefront. I agree, once you get it its hard to turn it off. I usually don't take it the extreme since I am not playing Neo Soul but it works in moderation in many other styles.

Nice lesson. Laying back makes a world of difference and is one of the untangibles between a beginner and a seasoned player. I didn't notice as much until I started getting into.recording.

I can't hear it. Can you suggest how to train your "micro time" perception?

Honestly, it takes trial and error like most things. I would say play behind to the extreme, and then begin to dial it back closer to the beat. If you look up artists in the Neo Soul, Gospel or even Jazz genres, you will come across records where this will become more evident.

It sounds more locked when it’s slightly behind almost like a whip between drum and bass. When it’s right on the beat the bass over shadows the drum and they sound separate rather than together

Very interesting concept with laying back. I feel like I’ve been playing behind the beat but need to play more on top. Thanks for the correction and the great video

Thanks for sharing. Definitely depends on the genre, but in general, even just a slight bit of laying back can make it sit differently in the pocket. Thanks for watching!

Be careful where/when you use this concept. A lot of people strictly want to hear bass on or on-top of the beat, and won't understand what you're doing or why, which can be misconstrued as having "bad time".

This is a very good insight. We definitely want to meet the need in every specific situation. My intent was to challenge the notion that it always has to be on top. Thanks for sharing.

Funny, I was told by a producer years ago I needed to play on top of the beat LOL.
