I always enjoy your chessable course including this one. Burying enemy pieces are very important concept but not mentioned clearly when we're learning chess normally. You are only the one that is clearly stating this concept and brought me to a higher chess board recognition for sure. Thanks as always!

Thanks for your great content. It helps a lot. Just got your third course. After a long plateau results seem to again improve for me. The channel is truely underrated. Maybe Can is too similar to can and the algorithm has difficulties with it. Keep it up!

Black's pawn structure is worse than white's. Both black's pieces have very few available squares and white's king is more active than black's. White wins every bishop endgame since black's bishop is stuck on g6. For instance, Rc4 Rxc4 Kxc4 is winning because after Ke7 white wins the a-pawn after Kc5 Kd7 Kb6. If Black plays f5 instead of Ke7, the bishop can be liberated, but after exf5 Bh7 Kc5 f6, the bishop can escape via g8 but the cost is to high after Kxc6. Hence, the only move for black after Rc4 is Re5, since after Rg5 f4 the rook is trapped. I first looked at Rc4 Re5 Rxc6 Re7 Rc5, which looks fine for white, but perhaps it isn't so easy to convert if black tries to play actively with the rook trying to utilise White's backrank to get to white's only weakness, the pawn on h3. But white can do better. Instead of Rxc6, white plays f4 Re7 f5 Bh7 Rxc6 and black's bishop is burried forever. After f4, black can't play Re6 to defend the pawn on c6 because f5 is then a fork. Nice topic and fun homework problem! Your previous video on the einstellung effect also was helpfull, because it made me look for other candidate moves besides Rxc6 followed by Rc5.
@Dr.CansClinic

Thank you so much for this extremely detailed response ❤️ You are spot on with your judgement - all bishop endgames are winning for White. Rc4! is objectively the best move, and ...Re5 Rxc6 gives a winning advantage - given Black's bishop is totally shut down. But I liked your improvement with f4+f5 there! White is spoiled for choice. Thanks for the feedback on the Einstellung effect! We should all watch out for that bias! ☺️

Homework: The doubled f pawns are boxing in the bishop on the kingside, so a natural plan is f4 followed by f5 to shut the bishop out completely. The only way the opponent can prevent it is by going to f5 themselves after f4, but that sacrifices a pawn (I would take back with the e pawn to avoid the bishop going to h5, from where it could get into my territory more easily and pressure the base of my pawn chain) and we could then play Bb3, so that if they ever try to get the bishop out via f7, we can trade into a rook endgame where we are a pawn up and can make a passed g pawn

f4-f5 is also a strong plan, but we can always do it later. Can we exchange Black's only active piece and leave them with an entombed bishop?

The Geller game was fascinating, thanks for analysing it so clearly. Homework. The black bishop is buried so we might adopt the Geller idea and trade the rooks by offering a rook trade R c4. However if he doesn't trade he can go R d5+, which is not nice. f4 seems good as if black goes f5 we can take exf and keep the bishop buried and open the e file. Not an easy one this as it depends on what black does after f4, it's not forcing a move but it still seems strong as it gives us options.

Thank you so much! 1 f4! is a very strong move indeed! 1. Rc4! is also great strategically. I think we should not worry too much about 1...Rd5+ as that rook won't have any activity and it will be tied down guarding c6 anyways. We can even go Rc5 and pick up the a5-pawn. :)

homework spoiler - no engine White can restrict black's doubled f-pawns and it's light-square bishop by keeping pawns on the light squares while still maintaining some activity for it's own light-square bishop. f4 f5 exf5 Bh7 Kd2 (to unpin) f3 Bb3 prevents Bg1 Taking the f-pawn with the b-pawn allows Bh5 and black to activate the bishop therefore it is a blunder.

I shall never forget this lesson with that stuffed knight. Thank you. Rc4 to kettle the Bishop on g6. The White King can hoover up the pawns on the a and c files.

This is beautiful chess. I feel the same way. A strong position is better than expecting 20 moves of calculation to work for real. I had games with similar advantages where there was no clear tactic, but the opponenf resigned at eval -2 positional crush. This is sweet to play because I never liked calculating to begin with.

For the homework position, instant f4, f5. How cool would that be. No calculation, no tricks. F5 = resign.

In the homework position i would definitely, knowing the theme, go for f4 -f5 to shut down the light squared bishop forever. We might have to play something else first though like rc4, forcing a rook trade and improving our king:)
@Dr.CansClinic
@Dr.CansClinic Жыл бұрын
The bishop on g6 is already out of play, and there is no way that it can come back to life any time soon. Thus, Rc4! is the best!

I would move to f4 which restricts the black rook. Then exchange the rook with Rc4 and advance the f-pawn to bury the light square biship.

Excellent content as always. On the homework position black's rook and bishop are very restricted. We should push f3-f4 and then exchange the rooks. With black's bishop completely shut down we should be able to win the endgame easily by promoting one of our pawns.

@@Dr.CansClinic I think yes, because his Rook will be able to escape with Re5. Of course we get the pawn on c6, but my idea was to exchange.

I like Rc4 with the idea of trading rooks and winning the queenside pawns with my king while blacks terrible bishop is stuck in the corner. If black doesn't trade rooks they have to play Re5 or Rg5 which are both very passive aquare for the rook and allow Rxc6 with ideas of advancing the king and forcing a rook trade on the 5th rank.
