I had a Clarinet tutor at lunchtime in Primary School who (80's era) clearly didn't think boys shouldn't play woodwind instruments and he never thought me that blowing trick! Different instrument. Possibly different techniques for woodwind instruments! But great video. Hope you make another trombone video next year or six months later to show where you've since gotten along with the trombone

Although it wasn't going to give Tricky Sam Nanton a run for his money, you sounded way better than I would have expected! You got a big sound of that instrument! PS: Ravel's "Bolero", that has that fantastic trombone moment on it! Next time have Basil play that one! PSS: Duke Ellington, "Blue Cellophane" has a great trombone solo. And "Carnegie Blues" has a gorgeous trombone section playing together. The 1940s recordings of those songs. Ellington had an amazing trombone section in the 30s and 40s.

Hey Caroline - you got some good sounds out of that trombone! Admittedly, not sounds that Beethoven would have recognised, but full marks for effort nonetheless! On one occasion when David Bowie was stuck for inspiration in the studio, he had his band members swap instruments and the resulting slightly unhinged, off-kilter sounds proved very fruitful. Oh, and may I suggest you try the vibraphone and/or glockenspiel? 🙂

I chuckled for quite a while, but, Caroline....."you can do eeet!" You'll never know unless you try. Well done on the experiment. I'm a classically trained pianist and thought I'd be able to do everything well. I also play guitar and violin. So, I spent a crap-load of money on a saxophone and found that woodwind was not my friend. However, I persevered and was able to play it with a certain level of "competence". I won't say I mastered it by any means, though...

I was actually impressed you played an actual note on your first attempt. Most people have more difficulty getting the lip "buzz" needed to play. I was never great on any wind instrument and especially brass. I did almost by accident play the French horn at my own high school graduation because my high school only had two players and one was sick that day. I was in the orchestra and they asked if anyone could play Pomp and Circumstance so I said I would give it a try. The biggest challenge I had is that there were 600+ kids in out graduating class so we had to keep playing it over and over as they all entered.

Too funny - and brave! Trombone was the first instrument I learned, in 5th grade (1963!), and while I played it through high school, my career as a performer (at least on trombone) ended there. What a fun video, and I hope you make it a series with other instruments, to which I'd propose: string bass (aka bass viol), bassoon (very challenging!), and, oh, maybe shakuhachi!

The trombone is one of those instruments that seems easier than it is to play, because it's basically a shaped elongated metal tube with a mouthpiece and slide, as opposed to much more complex looking ones like the piano, harp or bassoon. Of course it's not, no instrument is. I tried learning to play the trumpet in college, and while it was fun it was a lot of work and I ended up giving it up (it's also a challenging instrument to learn because it's so loud and neighbors don't exactly appreciate the noise). But I think the keys to mastering any instrument, or anything really, is one, endless practice, obviously, and two, having fun with it. Well, at least you checked off one of them. 😂

I must say even though you showed your inexperience on the instrument you did better than I ever could. I'm a musician but played stringed instrument and percussive instruments and sing. But I could never play wind instruments. You were actually making noise and had a ballpark grasp of the instrument. You would just need time and practice and someday I think you could play well. Most of us would probably get a barely audible whooshing noise and basically make music only a dog could here. So dont feel bad, though you showed your lack of skills on the trombone with time and practice you probably could play OK and after much time and practice you probably could be pretty good. Nice work and fun video. I definitely enjoyed this video and all your others. Keep enjoying yourself and spreading the love of music.

Of all the instruments you could have picked, the trombone had to be one of the hardest. No valves so the tones had to come from your lips and the proper position of the slide. Had to be tough, but you get an A+ for effort, plus it looked like you had fun doing it. I know I had fun watching the video. The only sound I would have been to get out a trombone would be percussion when I tossed it to the floor, but at least it would have been a sound.
