How do you get headroom and how do you make your beat sound loud without clipping or still maintaining your head room?

The question you wanna ask is what is headroom. Headroom is the amount of level you have or space you have between the "0db line" and the loudest part of your audio. If you want a loud master prepare your mix to be loud. If you want your mix to be clean then is has to be clean in the sound design stage. That's atleast how I think. With a mastered track there usually isn't any headroom since the music is sitting around 0db after mastering. Set your levels right and we'll bellow 0db, maybe a limiter at the end just to catch the odd peak.

SIKKY maybe I haven’t been doing it wrong then! Lol. Thank you bro, this was very helpful. I usually get frustrated when it gets around 0db. Now that I know that’s what’s supposed to happen that makes it a lot better. Do you have any videos on gain staging?

@@Coleyhigdon I don't really one trick you could try is adding a plugin to your master that adds 10-15db of gain and then mixing with that plugin on. Keep an eye on your master to make sure it doesn't clip. When the mix sounds good to you. Turn of that gain plugin and everything should become a lot quieter and leave you with a bunch of headroom.

All you are doing is adding a plugin on the master to make the signal louder while you mix so that when you look at your meters everything is louder because of the plugin. Hope that makes sense. So if I've got this straight, the stages are: -Light compression, long attack, 0ms release -Light clean up EQ -Light saturation, add some dBs and fatness -Limiting to get that final gain increase I use logic pro x, so I have to figure out the equivalent plugins and settings to use to achieve the same thing lol

Attack between 15-30ms release auto The 0ms will make the mix sound small. The 15 to 30ms will bring out the transient and punch

For my mastering process, I use a submix bus which has the UAD 1176 compressor, into the FabFilter Pro MBultiband Compressor, into Slate Virtual Mix Rack with the (Mix buss Punch Preset), and on my Master Channel, I have Slate Digital FG-X compressor and limiter. Although Slate plugins are really nice, I'm considering unsubscribing since its $30/month
