EDIT (This is a great tutorial) I want to add to this to say that the volume dial on the channel rack and the fader on the mixer add and remove gain in exactly the same way. This was talked about in the video. The only difference is that the channel rack volume is pre effects and the mixer fader is post effects gain. There is a lot of nonsense going around that the channel rack volume is a "pre amp" and that it sounds different to the mixer gain. It isn't. If you add 5db with the channel rack and take away 5 dB on the mixer with no effects in you chain it will sound identical. A polarity cancellation test will confirm this. Furthermore, if you use a plugin like EQ2, it doesn't matter what volume you hit it at, low or high gives an identical result when you balance the level afterward, it's not the same as the "analog modelling" plugins that need the gain to be just right. Hope that helps
@LifeStyleDidIt5 жыл бұрын
Personally haven’t seen that info going around anywhere but thanks for adding in if some users believe that. I did mention what the channel rack volume does in the video, just as you said. Again, I’m sure you were speaking to people reading comments, thanks!

Every beatmakers can make a beat, but very few really give the mixing and mastering BEATS the important it deserves, so that the sound of the song sounds like a melody whose instruments participate in the scale of sound that corresponds to it in the melody.
@diamondbee91215 жыл бұрын
That’s an amazing video ! I’m watching all your mixing videos right now! I think I now understand the gain staging process, but to be clear : whenever I put a sample, let’s say a kick in the channel rack, my goal should be to use the knob in the rack to get some headroom in the mixer, then add some effects and always come back to the initial volume to prevent from clipping with the gain knob from the Param. Eq let’s say. Then if at the end of the mix I want to increase the volume, I can always use the headroom to adjust it. What about the samples (especially kicks) that already clip and go up to 3 dB without any effect ? If I turn down the knob in the channel rack, will it still be clipping ? Sorry for my probably unclear questions, I’m not a native ^^’ but keep it up it’s so informative ! Making a good beat isn’t that difficult for me, but making a good mix is ! Thanks again
@LifeStyleDidIt5 жыл бұрын
Diamond Bee just set an initial level that leaves headroom! Don’t drive yourself mad haha! You can always use the mix fader to increase volume

Do you gain stage velocity stems for a kick drum? Does Lifestyle set his velocity stems at a default or do you pull them all the way up? If you do gain stage velocity stems, which elements of the song do you gain stage through velocity stems? Drums only? Instruments? Basically, does the velocity stems change the character of the sample i.e. clipping or making it softer?
@LifeStyleDidIt5 жыл бұрын
Christian Botello if it’s a ONE shot sample, velocity knobs are only gonna act as a volume knob. If you use a multi velocity VST or drum machine for example Superior Drummer, they have 20+ snare shots on one note so when you change the velocity , it triggers a different sample (softer hit, harder hit)

This is great, but most of the time you don't need it. Rappers don't care if your beat is gainstaged correctly or not. If it slaps it slaps. Plus nowdays quantity > quality. You'd much rather want to spend 5-10 minutes making a beat that works and make 6 of those in hour, than wasting an hour on making one beat that might not even make it. Just some thoughts for y'all.
@LifeStyleDidIt5 жыл бұрын
alangalt I wouldn’t promote that so heavy, especially since the video is towards mixing, not making the beat.

@@LifeStyleDidIt You're very welcome. I can imagine u're spammed all the time, but I'll take my chances and ask, if would have time and mood ofc, what do you think about my newest beat? (No samples) ^^ kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKiTgXukfK6blbc&ab_channel=Creame Im just starting with the channel, but the question is, am I ready or should I study and practise sound more before I enter the "big battle" on BeatStars, YT etc.? ;D Keep up the great work!
