Absoluelty bloody briliant to see it finished. My grandafther made 2 models of a Hetzer in his life time. He painted both light-brown. I dont know why he chose that colour scheme and I never got to ask him why (he was in one for a while) but I have never ever seen a a solid brown camo ever.

Looks great. You've a steady hand & the patience of a saint. An alternative to the wire loop for applying super glue is sewing needles. Cut the top of the thread eyelet off to create a fork for the glue. Different sizes of needles allow you to have more/less super glue. Drill a hole in a bamboo skewer and you've got a handle. To clean out the glue just burn it off with a lighter. I find it a bit more controllable.

My Opa’s unit (8th Panzer Division 43rd Abt) had a Hetzer . I could never find it on the T O and E list for the 43rd Abt Panzerjager. But they had one. My Opa spoke of it and I have a photo of it in action. Also in the book of the history of the Division it is mentioned. But what I really want to do is make a diorama of a small skirmish my Opa told me about. His crew was using the Marder 2 Sd.Kfz. 131. He was in the last Marder on the end of a defensive line. They were dug in. Opas boy hood friend was the CO of the 43rd Panzerjager Abt. His name was Capt Amsel. Opa said that when Amsel came over to check on them all he’ll broke loose. The Russians broke out of the tree line and after a bitter battle over ran the Marder. The crew of his Marder, the adjacent Marder and some Panzer Grenaders fell back along with Capt Amsel. Immediately Amsel organized a counter attack. And this is the scene I would (or someone else) I want to recreate in a diorama. Opa said they ran back to the Marder screaming like mad men. As they got to the vehicle they noticed the Russians were trying to move the vehicle out of position. Capt Amsel was the first one on the scene. (He always has a white tunic on with an officers soft hat.) Opa said it was hand to hand. Everything from guns to fist was used. They did win that skirmish and my Opa and Capt Amsel both survived. Capt Amsel received the German Cross in Gold. I think that would be a very interesting diorama. My question is what company makes the best figures for this battle scene?
@workbenchhobbies4316
@workbenchhobbies4316 10 ай бұрын
Hi Eric. I feel so privileged to have heard that story. Thank you for sharing it with me! For the figures…I seem to recall Masterbox or possibly Miniart had a couple of sets of hand to hand combat poses. But I’d say no matter what you do you may need to consider modifying the poses to suit. That would sort the soldiers, but the guys wearing the panzerjager uniforms could be a little trickier. I see Some scratch building and modification in your future😛😉 The diorama idea is fantastic, but made even more special because it means something to you. Can’t want to see it! 🙏

@@workbenchhobbies4316 If you wish to make it I feel it may come out a lot better! But I’ll give it shot. Amsel must have a white tunic on with a soft officers cap. Opa said he always had that filthy hat on cocked to one side. But for both of them to survive from 40 to 45 in the same unit is astounding. They called Opa “The old hare”

Great job. I agree with you on doing decals. I recently applied massive decals to a French AC 1914. Stressed me out the whole time. Of course, some of them folded on me, but in the end, the effort was worth it. I think, in your case, having all of the hatches open is accurate. My reason for saying that is because you did an obvious museum piece, and the museum may choose to show off the inside.

A great final result for the Hetzer Clayton! The camo and weathering are outstanding, as is your use of the airbrush. What airbrush and setup do you use for close up detail work? I don’t seem to have much success with freehand camo due to my shaky hand, so I use stencils or flexible medium to create the effects I want. I know this gives a hard edge to the result, but it works for me. I have really enjoyed this series, and looking forward to your next project. Love the channel mate. Cheers for now!

Thanks again Gary - love having you as part of the channel community. A lot of people have been asking about the airbrush, so to let you all know, its an Air Cobra from Ammo by MIG - 0.3mm. Nothing special. I just like the cup configuration on it. Easy to mix paint and then clean. Detail work and fine lines is all about the thinning of the paint and the air pressure. For detail work Im thinning to about 80:20 retarder to paint and spraying around 12-15psi. In saying that the type of paint and the environment you are spraying in will have a bearing on what that looks like... Hope that helps
@garylawless3608
@garylawless3608 Жыл бұрын
@@workbenchhobbies4316 Thanks for the reply Clayton. Considering your advice, think I may be getting the paint mix wrong with my setup. I know that different paints react differently to paint/thinner mix, as well as different air pressures, so I am trying to find the brand of paint that I find the easiest to use and then I will stick with it. I also realise that I need to get in a lot of practice with the chosen paint and airbrush that I use. I will give your recommendation regards the paint mix and air pressure a go and see if I can make it work for me. Thanks for the tip, and I will let you know how it works out. Cheers for now mate!
@workbenchhobbies4316

I can never get AK real colors to mix right, even with their special thinner. It turns out like a milk shake. Either I’ve gotten some bad batches, or it needs a massive infusion of more thinner. Tamiya paints seem so much easier to use. I’m not knocking AK. Id love to try them again. Until I can nail down this issue I can’t put it on a build. Didn’t Uncle Night Shift have a similar issue? I hope I’m not misspeaking. This builder is a genius though. He’s a great teacher.

@@workbenchhobbies4316 I use Vallejo model air but maybe it’s too thick. I will try to dilute it a bit more.

Ok…so it then becomes a question of what you are using to think you paint. Vallejo is an acrylic hence it drys a lot quicker than a lacquer and will dry in your airbrush tip. Thin with the branded Vallejo thinner, and possibly look at their flow improver. The model air range is ore-thinned, so those thinning ratios I suggested really don’t apply to that paint
