The direct competitor is the DMG Audio Limitless, and the aim is to outperform it. The 26 bands are also very CPU hungry, but it is also possible to work reasonably with 12 bands. According to my tests, the limiter is really excellent but not necessarily better than Limitless. I would currently see this order: 1. Limitless, 2. Elevate, 3. Pro-L2
@jesussaddle3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you really get it! I just "upgraded" to DMG Limitless from Elevate last night. But I only recently got Elevate, and I still like it, as a runner up. I agree with your rating - although there are probably some other Limiters that are fit more the console emulation role that I would turn to for a particular feel. (To those who haven't tried Limitless, I must say that the experience I had with it was way beyond what I expected; and perfect for what I do. I tested I like to be inspired and hear things the way they will sound when mastered. With Limitless this seemed to happen. Its not ONLY a limiter, but actually accomplishes something as powerful as Gulfoss, without even stating that it is doing so. Adjusting its dynamic EQ aspect is so transparent and organic that I will probably use it for a good portion of my EQ'ing. I sometimes turned to console emulations when trying to add "sheen" for instance, but Limitless blew me away with its ability to adjust its color (using its 6 bands of curve). Because I was so impressed with the natural sounding sheen it added I next had to see what it could do for portions of bass - and I was equally impressed. Meanwhile, for those instruments in my mix that had nice compression (kicks, bass guitar) Limitless seemed to make these parts of the track more noticeable and even to stereo-ize them. I know that some producers will need to stick to keeping the sound much the same as intended by the artist - for me Limitless can do that if you watch the 20 minutes of their instruction videos, but the bang for the buck for me is its creative and enhancing potential, making things pop as you like on a mix bus without spending tedious minutes with EQ's on multiple tracks. You can of course save the preset, and load it onto individual tracks for producing stems.

This is the first plug-in that I HAD to read the documentation to truly get the most value out of it. At first I was uncertain about what changes it was making until, while mixing on headphones, I thought some of the instruments and vocals were in the room! It gives a nice professional, “warm” sound that sounds better across more listening platforms. It sounded better on quality speakers and also on my phone. That sold me.

I've had it for nearly a year and has become my go to mastering limiter. It's deep but once you understand it's feature set you'll never look back.....probably. It's in a league of its own. Many sales available throughout the the year make it a no brainer, although you'll need one to take advantage of its capability. Also, you failed to mention, Elevate is part of a suite! Those are also worthy of a review. Especially 'Saturate' which is IMO better than the new clipper 'Flatline' everyone is raving about. Try the demo, but don't be lazy. There is some serious MODERN power in this design.

This is my current favorite limiter. I use the EQ and transient shapers just a tiny bit in the low end or if there's some obvious place elsewhere in the frequency spectrum. But, then, usually the right thing to do there is to go back in the mix and fix the issue there. The other limiter that I absolutely love is the TC Electric MD4. It's amazing and you can get that "radio pop" sound very easily. TC Electric plugins are underrated, IMHO; the reverbs are also amazing. Definitely get this plugin during the sales, and also get the suite with the separate EQ, transient shaper, and the saturator (clipper).

Cool that you finally review some real plugins again! Too bad though that you didnt even get into this plugin , the way you should have! The Main interesting factor is the frequency bands that are modeled on a melodic frequency scale, that imitates the way your ear recognizes music. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel_scale , also that you can change those bands manually and all the adaptive transient functionalities to it. Good to have you review its,a bit sad that you didnt really get or showed what its really about.

I know you know what you‘re doing but at 2:10 you say why make music so loud when it‘s getting turned down anyways. But why are professional mixes often at like -9 to -6 lufs? Eg when you upload a track mastered to say -12lufs and upload it to KZbin it will get turned down 2db and if you upload the same track mastered to -7 lufs it will get turned down 7db. Both play at -14lufs but the one mastered to -7lufs feels a lot.... a very lot louder. Why and do you do this? For me it‘s kinda like there‘s still loudness war cause of this
@jorykevinberger70474 жыл бұрын
It’s louder because as the low end gets pushed into the peak, the midrange is still able to get louder, and the midrange is really where our ear is drawn in being able to identify what is louder or quieter. So on one hand there is a loss of dynamics, but on the other, the quieter parts are indeed louder once level matched. So. The average at -14lufs for a -14lufs master does not have the same average level in the midrange as a -8lufs played back at -14lufs. The -8 is being turned down, it’s not adding dynamics back, and since the -14 never got pushed passed -14, again, when level matched, the -8 will “feel” perceivably louder. That’s why the war still exists. Hope that helps.
@vincevangoat14 жыл бұрын
@@jorykevinberger7047 yes thank you that helps a lot. But if I would just hard compress it from the start and kill the dynamics could i achieve the same perceived loudness at -14lufs right away? probably yes right? why don‘t people just do this instead? But thanks ur comment was really helpful
@jorykevinberger70474 жыл бұрын
@@vincevangoat1 sadly no. you would think it's that simple, but that's why mixing and mastering is so different and why you don't slam a compressor or limiter all over the place. What is a limiter but just a brick walled compressor? Too much 1176 hitting hard will yeild squeezed and terrible resutls. Don't rely on "make up" gain to compensate, you will surpass -14LUFS super fast. For example. You could try this. Belt into a mic, and then sing some soft parts. Then use a compressor to even it all out. Then watch the LUFS meter in the belting section. Watch it go from -12 to -5LUFS and hold there until the compressor lets go. That's just one track capable of bringing down the entire mix. You will wonder why your track is hitting -8LUFS and it still isn't loud, and there's no more headroom inside of the mix to boost the level without severely distorting it. That's the fine balance. If you did this throughout an entire mix, you will have something so lifeless, there won't be a chance for perceived loudness. A compressor is always a clamp. People often mistake that because they can use make up gain, it's making it louder. What you want to use to get perceived loudness is: Saturation. Download free (if you have not already) Softube saturation knob. Put it on a snare track. Bypass it, and turn the knob to 11 o clock. Check your snare track meter level. Let's say it's peaking at -3db, okay? Now enable the saturation knob. Watch it stay at -3db, or even go to -3.5db peak, as the snare comes to life, with a boat load of perceived loudness. Why? Saturation adds harmonics. Play with the saturation knob. Use it sparingly. 11 o clock is a lot of saturation. Now, the key is to use a compressor, not compressing too much at all, slow attack, fast release (unless you're mixing metal with fast transients) and follow it up with a saturator like the saturation knob. Saturation is what is happening in a clean amp versus a direct electric. It's still clean but has more body, weight, perceived texture. It's adding harmonics. The extent of saturation is a heavy distorted guitar. And if you put a direct guitar track next to it's distorted amped track, at the same peak level, which one seems much much louder? Saturation. By the time you get to mastering though, your mix should sound how you want it, at that point you're not looking to color it more with compression or saturation. Obviously you can, but the idea of the limiter at this point is that you will have a created a really nice crest factor while mixing that it won't take much to limit to -14 LUFS, you may already be there, and it may already be perceivably loud. But the work is done, and it doesn't feel squashed, so pushing into -8LUFS at that point won't destroy the mix. It makes mastering much easier. While compressing is also saturation, you want to be careful how much life you squeeze out attempting to use make up gain to get it back. Anyhow, hope that helps you further. :) Cheers.

I picked this up on their holiday sale - still fully wrapping my brain / ears around it, but it’s def a nice complement / different flavor to Ozone. Really enjoying it, and not just for mastering. @Aaronbeaumontmusic4 жыл бұрын
It’s not necessarily “better” but I’ve found myself incorporating it pretty much immediately for tunes where I want “louder” punchier masters - it has a different tone / saturation than Ozone to my ear, maybe slightly less “sheeny”? I like the built in EQ / multi band transient shaper for finessing during mastering stage, things that I’d probably normally dip back into the mix session to dial in. I’ve been A/B-ing vs Ozone every time and sometimes I’ll leave in Ozone’s dyn EQ before Elevate, but I’ve been leaning toward Elevate for the end of chain pretty consistently. Btw I waited for it to go on sale, and snagged the bundle for $70-ish at Plugin Discounts so the sales are great whenever they happen.

I must admit.. I prefer the combination of invisible limiter and fabfilter pro L... or for soft clipping frontier from d16 into pro L.... You'd be surprised at how good that really is. This plugin.. sounds compressed from the get go. Like its cool. But it sounds.. squashed in a not so pleasing way if I'm comparing to a commercial track. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just.. not.. as good as the other limiters. I mean.. I'd take soothe, into a touch of frontier, into pro L.

Tried their awesome eq plugins and decided I don't have the proper room acoustics for this type of mastering. So I stick to my great AKG cans when I'm not able to do proper (non EDM) mastering

I think it would be cool if you could go through some presets of some of the plugins, especially the ones that are more complex and take more time to really learn. So you would also could possibly take a listen to some of the more dramatic effects when more parameters are tweaked.

Actually this is a very clever tool, but is it only for EDM and heavy styles, Dubstep - or can it work well for for acoustic, gentler music? I'm tempted to buy it, as it's got to be useful for demos at the very least? I mean it won't just refuse because it doesn't like gentle music? Brain and all ;-) It's made by a good company, Eventide I believe - but will I ever understand it? I thing no is the safe answer, but It's going to stretch my brain trying

Not sure I'd use this on mixes but it could be cool live or for radio on the master to make different mastered music similar volume and similar eq especially with amatuear stuff.

much too complicated but schepps relies on it so...it might be for super-duper-pros only :D i now use the ozone maximizer in combination with flatline.

It is not limiter plugin. It is fantastic!

You've completely missed out on the adaptive features. Loads of tweaking but the limiter is worth it for sure.

I wouldn't mind a cheap limiting plugin turning into a robotic vacuum, could save you lots of money! EDIT: Just saw the price, must be a good robotic vacuum to beat a regular one!
