Ahhhh, so important - unless we are in an anechoic chamber, everything we hear has some reflections - thus the need for even a tiny bit of ambience on everything to place in in the mix.

Sorry, I am a bit late to the party with this excellent workshop series. I hope I can still get an answer here as this "consolidation/normalization" thing has been bothering me for a while... So, at 24:20, James says to "grab any plugin and stick it at the end (of your FX chain)" Then freeze/flatten. This will allow you to consolidate individual samples without normalization occuring as it does when consolidate sounds. Ok cool, but does he literally mean any plugin? He chose Utility in his instance. Is there any reason he didn't select a limiter or auto filter for example? I don't understand why the plugins he already had on the chain in the example would not have been sufficient? Did I miss something? kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJq2e3-Xa9poZqc

Hi... How can i get in contact with James Wiltshire? I have a house track and i would like him to take a look for mix and mastering. Thank you!
@DANNYFIGDESIGNS8 жыл бұрын
Lol. I was trying to figure out how the hell did he put arrows (14:17) on his Open HiHat track. I'll let you figure out why it's funny. By the way... fantastic video! Thanks. Going to experiment more with parallel compression/effects. Quick question. First off... I have issues committing. I'm always worried that if I render my track and not save all the midi and effect setups, that I will have an issue down the road. For instance, I had rendered a track and later found that my delays were not right. Couldn't fix it, because I did not save the original setup. I noticed that James renders and the original is gone. Sorry for the long intro to my question. So here it is: What is your suggestion regarding commitment? I'm guessing just get it right the first time if your not going to save the original setup?
@VimDoozy8 жыл бұрын
Danny Figueroa It's probably easier to commit when you have a lot of experience and you're better able to anticipate the likelihood of needing to modify it later. Plus in tutorials like this, it's easy to commit because the tutor doesn't really care much about the track. If it was their own release I doubt they'd be so quick to commit and move on.
@alexhormann89318 жыл бұрын
Very interesting, James! Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge! But I've missed the point of grouping the compressor. It has a dry/wet control. I've even compared both versions, yours at -6db and the normal one at 50% wet via phase reverse. Perfect silence! Is there any other benefit of the grouped version?
@klanggenerator29188 жыл бұрын
5:30 - couldn't he just have used the dry/wet control of the comp to achieve the same result? I mean that's what it's there for or not (parallel compression)...
@drekofficial8 жыл бұрын
+Nick Jacholson well yes its the same but, if we want to add other stuff in the chain, like EQ to boost the lows. some saturation. well whatever you want really, i know he didnt do nothing of that on the video but its normal to do it, at least an EQ. and for that you need another chain instead of dry wet :) he is probably so used to do this way
@nikitayermak4 жыл бұрын
Sooo helpful and clear! Thank you!
@daze1587 жыл бұрын
What was the saturaation plugin that he used on the clap?
@LaymensLament8 жыл бұрын
Eh. What is the difference between a gate "sidechained by itself" vs just a gate on the track? Isn't it the same? I'm getting so confused trying to think about it.
@JonnyPoy6 жыл бұрын
He is sidechaining the reverb effect to the sound itself. You will hear a reverb effect on the sound, but it won't have a tail since it will be muted when the sound is finished playing.

Why does he put in the Utility before flattening the track? How does that stop it from normalizing the clip? can't he just flatten it without adding the plugin and still get the same result?

I really respect this guy for all his knowledge and experience. However, I do wonder with a lot of dance music whether it is overproduced and squashed with compression & limiting! Not only that, but James's mixes appear to be very busy and there seems to be little breathing space in them. I think that is because of the strict demands of the genres he is working in.
@diwr8 жыл бұрын
can someone explain to me why he does parallel compression using two tracks rather than just using the dry/wet knob to control the signals...??

ohh I see he's EQing the two signals differently. makes sense now.

it does seem like he's over-analyzing the sounds despite his brilliant ear... I kinda think the layperson cares more about the energy communicated through dynamics and progression of the arrangement rather than the absolute frequencies of the sounds produced... thoughts people?

Talk about over-engineering! I wonder if James Wiltshire shows us all this fiddling just for demonstration's sake or because that's how modern music is made. I mean, he's trying to teach us how to recreate music that was originally just a monosynth and a drum machine - and maybe an AKAI sampler.
