Federer, who hadn't lost in 24 finals, was beaten 6-7 (7-4), 6-7 (13-11), 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) for only his fourth defeat this year. Nalbandian ended Federer's 35-match winning streak and his bid to equal John McEnroe's 21-year-old mark of 82-3 for the best winning percentage in a season in the Open era.

I jumped out on my chair when Federer broke Nalbandian to 6-5, then when it was 30-0, I thought that there's no way Roger will lose this match but then, unbelievable And while Federer rallied back from 0-3, my hope rose again but finally...

This was one of the best matches in tennis. The variety and the shot-making shown by both players was sublime. You don't see this type of tennis with the slowing down of surfaces today. Yes, Fed was coming back from injury, but that's not the reason he lost. This same Federer had beaten the same Nalbandian in a tough 3-setter in the RR stages. In this match, Nalbandian simply took the match away from Fed. He came storming back from 2 sets down, and then managed to break back to send the final set to a tiebreak. Not to mention, Nalbandian was always a tough opponent for Fed. Their H2H is the closest compared to anyone else in Fed's era.

Inolvidable final!

Better tennis has N E V E R been played. I could go on and on and on about the otherworldly talent of Nalbandian. There is no metaphor in human language that properly defines the greatness of this match, and Nalbandian's skill altogether. It actually makes me tear up. The feeling I got when I saw this match for the first time is the same feeling I got when I had strawberries for the first time. This is the match I refer to when somebody asks me which match is the greatest of all time.

jbobbster I beg to differ. That's like comparing across eras, which doesn't make sense at all because of the differences in racquet technology and Tour restrictions,. That's why Federer can never be considered the GOAT, because he dominated only in a small 4 year window, out of the last 100 something years of tennis. (Not even considering Royal Tennis from which Tennis, Squash and most of the racquet sports today have originated from. Might as well call some British monarch the greatest tennis player before the 20th Century) I don't even think Federer is the greatest player of the last decade considering Nadal grabbing many more tougher slams in this tougher physical era, with an equally great opponent in Djokovic. Nadal and Djokovic have their own worth to tennis, whose ATP organisers which had made a unanimous decision -a long, long time ago- to have slower courts that produce long rallies, after the time of Sampras. Their worth is in their unique style and they've been reared on these slow courts, and have dominated them. There's no logic in making them out to have an 'inferior' style just because you haven't gotten used to the new era. Every older connoisseur tends to turn into a curmudgeon, and maybe you should accept the present.
@jbobbster

Caleb Pereira If you like watching five hour grindfests on slow hardcourts where two guys just rally until the other misses, be my guest. I, like other true tennis fans, will enjoy tennis filled with great shots making on fast courts that give the advantage to everyone, not just a select few. Not to mention, nobody other than Fed can say they won 3 out of 4 GS 3 times in 4 years. Djokovic could do it once, and so could Nadal. But neither could maintain that level in successive years, let alone 4 straight years.
@CalebPereira9123
@CalebPereira9123 10 жыл бұрын
_"True tennis fan"_ I'm skeptical of your hasty self-styling. A true tennis fan would be open to all styles. A true tennis fan wouldn't make a hegemony like you just did. And it doesn't give the advantage to a select few. That's complete and utter bullshit. The ones who are at the top take it out of their foresight, conditioning, and hard work. Should I say Federer was given the advantage post-2002 when they gradually slowed down courts so that Roddick's serve lost some of it's potency and that Nalbandian couldn't physically keep up with the slower baseline game? No. I don't. Because he took it from them. Hewitt, Safin, Nalbandian, Roddick and Davydenko put together have won less than Djokovic alone. It shows how much tougher Nadal has had it, because he had a GREAT rival. Unlike Federer in those 3-slam years. Nadal and Djokovic have had each other, so no one's ever gonna mistake their era as an easy one. I don't think the same can be said of Federer's 2003-2007 era. Federer's 4 year domination period was weak. Period.
@jbobbster
@jbobbster 10 жыл бұрын
Caleb Pereira How nice, you have to swear to try to get your point across. How funny. I AM a fan of all styles. But unfortunately court speeds at major tournaments only favor baseline grinders. PLAYERS have to be baseline grinders to win GS these days. Wimbledon grass is painfully slow. IW is the slowest HC on both tours. Martina Navratilova said it's useless trying to hit great volleys at IW, because the opponent has enough time to get a sandwich and still get to the ball. The Paris Masters, once the fastest indoor tournament, has slowed significantly. Prime example is the first year Paris went from carpet to HCs. Nadal and Nalbandian both made the final. It's not BS. When Pete was on top, players didn't have to just be serve and volleyers to win. Players didn't just have to be big hitters. Players didn't just have to be grinders. Whoever could adapt their specific playing style to the given court surface could win. That's what made that era better than this current slow-court era. And once again, you prove you're another person who mistakes dominance for a weak era. Roddick would have won more GS had Fed not been there. Davydenko would have won multiple GS had it not been for Fed. Nalbandian could have won multiple GS had he focused better. It didn't mean they were week opponents. Federer was just that much better. Just like Serena today, as well as Martina and Chrissie in the 80s. Dominance does NOT mean a weak era. And the slowing of courts didn't cause Roddick's serve to lose its potency against Fed. Fed perfected the block return, as well as he read Roddick's serve as good as anyone. Even on fast courts, Roddick's serve wasn't that overpowering the Federer. And as Roddick got older, he chose to get a higher-percentage of first serves in play. So, in turn, he took 10mph off, himself. His serve wasn't neutralized that much by slow surfaces. Tell Nadal and Djokovic to try to dominate on FAST Wimbledon grass. Tell them to try to win the Paris Masters on indoor carpet courts. No doubt, they benefitted from the slowing of surfaces. Like I said, this match, with great shot-making, was better than any Nadal-Djokovic grandest, like the the 2012 AO final. You could also include the Fed-Safin AO SF match, or the Roddick-Fed 09 Wimbledon final.

i think nalbandian, at his best, can match federer shot for shot- can match him in the finesse dept; in the courtcraft dept; baseline and forecourt. i reckon the most amazing feature of this match is that the rallies are so long but it's an indoor court, so decisions have to be made at lightning speed, and they both make the right ones again and again. djoco cant volley like this, nadal aint got nalbandy's backhand, neither have his imagination... would love to see a santoro vs nalbandian match.

Man this is fuckin tennis. The two most talented players. Look at those angles, those drop-shots, volleys... Everything is there. This is pure Tennis, the skills of both players is incredible. Compare that to fuckin never ending boring 50 shots rallies we have now thanks to fuckin ATP making courts slower, which allowed the emergence of players like Nadal, Novak, and Murray. Boring to death, hitting the ball back forever until the opponents breaks. Tennis was a sport rewarding intelligence & technique over sheer power and the physical aspect. Now it's the other way around. It has changed so much as a sport. Novak wouldn't win a single slam during Sampras' era, and Sampras would probably not win neither in our era.

@PestoSpeciale

@theone225 I would like to correct you...the best match on the tour (if not best at all) is Federer vs Nadal final Rome 2006...then it was played best-of-5-sets and it was drama till an end(all decided in tie break). The best one mainly because of quallity of the match, quallity of groundstrokes. Federer played much better than at Wimbledon 2008 and Nadal was also on the top of his game.

There were some great rallies in that match, and it did go to 9-7 in the 5th, but the reason why people rave about it is because of the already built rivalry they had, Nadal was closing the gap to Federer, there were lots of rain delays, darkness was falling, and it's Wimbledon. It's like there are several intriguing factors like that, that you don't see in the stats and the overall play.

and that you cannot do, i remember that Fed said to the doctor: "i have nothing left in my legs" or something like that, and after that the roger´s final set comeback came and he played like the first two sets again. That´s something i hate about tennis players because allmost every player do it, but is not common in guys like Federer or Nalbandian, usually when they stop is because is serious. Anyway i think is the only time i saw Roger doing that thing that is so common on Nadal or Djokovic

guys Nalbandian wasn´t even training when he was called on the last minute to play this tournament, he was on vacation, he went there with no preparation at all and not in a good physical shape either, so don´t try to use Fed´s foot problem as an excuse. Both players made it to the final and played their very best. One thing i didn´t liked about this match is that Roger being down at the final set called the tournament doctor and stopped the match for some minutes because he was tired

@DuchDoby I wouldn't go that far, but it was fabulous. I wouldn't put it up there with Wimbledon 2008 and 2009 simply because Federer's level dropped off so much after winning the first two sets while Nalbandian stayed consistently great the entire match. The first two sets were absolutely unbelievable. If they'd kept playing like that and it had gone five sets--woof--it would have to go up there with the best all-time.

2005 had some of the best matches ever, at least of the decade! The Coria Nadal match in Rome, Safin Federer in Australia, Agassi Blake in New York and Federer Nalbandian in Shanghai.

@GALEfz In Nadal and Djokovic's defense, they play a much more athletic game than Federer so they probably do hurt themsleves or tire themselves more, plus they are more prone to injuries because of this so I am sure they are just being cautious. Not saying that they do not call for help when not needed or cry wolf so to speak, but it probably isn't as bad as you think.

@IvanAndreevich People really need to learn to appreciate other tennis players than Federer and Nadal... Nalbandian is a top player, or at least he was. And why do you say that Federer isn't playing "normally" there, do you really think he is holding back in the Masters Cup Final?

Not to take anything away from Nalbandian but did people know that Federer was on crutches for 4 weeks prior to this tournament in Shanghai? He had to come into this tournament pretty much without any sort of preperation.

Has gaudio won roger? Roger has never been defeated by David Ferrar. but, Djoko and Nadal of the heyday are already defeated by the old player David Ferrer. what reason Everyone knows that Roger has already declined of age. Especially his footwork decline. And, he and all other players has the slump of sick or injury Anyone understands the difference in the level of the play of Djoko of last year and this year. You are not Roger's fan and anti rather. There is not what I tell to you any more

The present heyday player is always making the excuse. their fan is always going to justify them. All the players have the injury and sick slump I accept Roger's defeat. David also has injuries. that time was their best or not. game of gaudio and federer is the relationship of their style. level of Federer's play had fallen more in the final. It is not easy to continue a game. And present Roger's play has further fallen. A lot of easy mistake more. A decline of age is serious like an injury

However, he did not perform it. sorry for his

@bjarktron Can you see his ankle brace? Can you see the poor movement? Obviously Nalby played a good match, but there is no way he could ever come back from 0-2 sets against a healthy Federer. Just look how Fed tanked the second set. Never would Federer tank a set unless he was struggling physically.
