My father was in the 351st Bomb Group 8AAF Flying J. Many missions in the tail gunner position, where he was wounded with flak, few in ball turret. Never spoke about it. Like many from this generation they came back and work hard and raised families and contributed to America.

My dad flew 35 missions with the 351st in early 1944. He was a bombardier. Maybe they knew each other. What great men they all were.

These guys have been my heroes my whole life. I used to go to the 8th AAF meetings with all the vets every 3rd Saturday of the month. This series is fantastic but it has really made me miss my friends. It's been real neat for me to see some of the men I knew in this series and as young men for they were all in their 70s when I 1st met them. At the reunions after a few drinks these guys would all be young men again all being quite the smart ass and flirtin with all the ladies especially the young ones haha. All a great bunch of guys. A few of them had English wives they'd married during the war. One lady I remember asking her if her husband had finished his tour before they got married. She said oh heavens no I think he still had 5 missions to go when he sent me home to meet my mother in law. I thought man sure glad he made it ok and this fella was flying with the 303rd in early 44 when losses were still pretty bad.

I'm suprised the ball trurret is not up. Was it only on the B-24 or is it because they're early models B-17?

I’m 6’3” and had trouble just moving around in a B-17. I can’t imagine trying to fight and fly in one, especially at altitude zipped up in heavy clothing. Know any teenagers or early twenties kids today who could do what those guys did?

Most teenagers or people in their early 20s today didn’t grow up in the depression. Previous generations weren’t super humans, they were products of their upbringing who rose to their occasion just like people always have and always will.
