I wish we could see some love for the B-24 Liberator rather than solely focus on the Flying Fortress.
@jamesstewartwilliams7 ай бұрын
I have to agree with you. The B-24 was arguably the superior aircraft (when compared to the B-17). It cruised faster than the B-17 and carried a more extensive payload than the B-17 over a longer distance. The Flying Fortress, however, flew higher than its stablemate; and could also take an extremely vicious beating. The B-17 was far more orthodox and forgiving to its young pilots (while being less modern - technologically speaking) than the liberator. That was an extremely important factor to consider back when slow training times for aircrewmen would have threatened the USAAF’s ability to wage war. Despite all of this, less Boeing B-17’s were ultimately produced for the war effort than Consolidated B-24’s. In conclusion, both types were amazing heavy bombers that had different strengths and weaknesses. History does seem to have favoured the B-17 nonetheless (in strict terms of stardom). The supermarine spitfire outshone the hawker hurricane, despite the latter earning more aerial victories during the Battle of Britain. The p-47 thunderbolt was eventually upstaged by the p-51 mustang. There are more examples I could give too. In terms of modern day high profile representations within Hollywood, the film unbroken did feature the liberator. I’m not aware of other major productions featuring it though. The B-17 has enjoyed numerous appearances in Hollywood including Memphis Belle, MotA, Red Tails, Closing the Ring, etc. Anyways, thank you for commenting.

I read in his book the stories the bravery and courage ..it truly reflects how great of a country we are, and what we would be willing to do in the cause of freedom. In his book he talks about his first day in England, as he was being escorted to his quarters and his assigned bunk he told the sargent,"looks like somone is already sleeping here The sargent replied there was yesterday."

@@jamesstewartwilliams "American bombing in the summer of 1943 had limited the planned expansion of the Luftwaffe's forces. This expansion had begun in mid-1941 when Goring ordered Milch to increase aircraft production sufficiently to quadruple front-line strength. Hitler accelerated the effort with additional demands for greater aircraft production in 1942. Milch merged existing factories into larger complexes in order to increase production. Though efficiency of scale helped raise output, it also made the American bombing effort easier by concentrating production in a few large complexes. Eighth's bombing efforts in the first half of 1943 were small by later standards, but they forced the Air Ministry to request the dispersal of Germany's aircraft manufacturing industry in May 1943. Little was done until Hitler gave Minister for War Production Albert Speer power to order plant dispersal in August 1943. This dispersal and American bombing caused output to lag in the fall of 1943. Speer and Milch planned to reach a production level of 2000 fighters per month by the summer of 1944, but the intensity of the Blitz Week attacks of late July 1943 convinced Milch to try to reach a production level of 2,000 per month by the end of 1943. Continued bombing frustrated Milch's venture and he reduced his production goals to 1,000 Bf 1O9s per month by December 1943 and 1,000 FW 190s per month by March or April 1944. -- "To Command the Sky" pp. 121-22 by Stephen McFarland and Wesley Newton

I read a book years ago by Martin Caiden entitled "Flying Forts." He covered the B-17 from design through the war. Yes, the B-24 was faster, carried a heavier load, and had greater range. But its high, thin and relatively narrow wings could not take the battle damage, which many fortresses endured. Thus, the B-17 was more durable and brought its crews home more effectively.
