I think the difference is that what you are referring to are the beginnings of the MOTU brand. Concepts and story lines were changed along the way as marketing and manufacturing decisions were made and honestly comparing the comic book to the cartoon is a moot point. Most all comic adaptations in the 80's were vastly different from the cartoons and the toys. Star Wars comics were maybe the least affected, but they did have differences to the source material. The Transformers comics were majorly different, GI Joe comics were different, Thundercats comics were different, etc etc. There were obvious character redesigns between toys and cartoons as needed as well that only served the purpose of either making animation easier or making characters more discernible from one another. Can you imagine the Transformers cartoon with accurate depictions of G1 Ironhide and Ratchet toys. Blegghh! Now we are going on 40 years of an established brand and changing things at this point is bound to spark at the very least conversation and at the most controversy. Especially when the upcoming series is billed as a direct continuation of the original cartoon series. I want this series to be good and am going into it with a completely open mind, but I must admit that it gives me some trepidation when I hear Kevin Smith continually make it sound like he has been a He-Man fan since day one. I still remember him saying on the Comic Book Men show back in the day that he "Had no love for He-Man" although he did recognize that it is something that people do like and that there is room in pop culture for different tastes. And I'm not saying that he couldn't have become a fan later in life, but he has really been representing himself as an "OG" MOTU fan since the series was announced. I have nothing against Kevin Smith either as he has made some films that are absolute bangers in pop culture, but over the past few years he has really started to feel more like he represents the corporate side of Hollywood rather than the creative side of Hollywood.

@@rez6541 There's noting to recover from, it's not like the brand just up and died again like it did in the late 80's/early 90's. MOTU was dead in the water for years up until 200X and Classics breathed life back into it and made it more than just a fondly remembered piece of 80's pop culture. MOTU is arguably in the best place it's been in years with not one but THREE main toylines, two of which have animated shows backing them, and toys in a wide variety of other form factors like those Mega Construx sets, the Eternia Minis, Fisher Price toys, UNO cards. Nevermind that several movies over the last few years, in addition to a lot of what Marvel and DC are pushing, are proving that whole "get woke, go broke" thing. It certainly seems like it's a vocal extreme minority pushing for inclusiveness and representation. And that minority rarely actually follows through to consume the product they're asking for.
@thecthuloser8763 жыл бұрын
@@williamzebub3252 I feel trying to bring the "get woke, go broke" argument in comic books is sort of a weird take, considering comic books have always sort of been "woke". And while both modern Marvel and DC put out some stinkers, some of the stuff that people complain about makes sense in context. That weird "I Am Not Starfire" thing? It's not designed for mainstream comic book fans, but the people that bought DC's Young Adult graphic novels, like the one with Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle dating in high school, or with the teenage Victor and Nora. Which apparently sell, since DC makes them... And DC is pretty quick to drop things that don't sell.
@williamzebub32523 жыл бұрын
@@thecthuloser876 They've been left of moderate for a while, sure. But Marvel flat out said years ago that the diverse books weren't selling and the signs were pointing to the fans wanting the classic versions of the characters back, (ie, the white guys). And now we're getting such wonders as the "woke" New Warriors debacle that got such bad feedback that the book was quietly swept under the rug and never even printed. Or the Red Skull quoting Jordan Peterson. And I haven't heard anything about the Hellfire Gala since it started, so I don't know where that went. I Am Not Starfire and You Brought Me the Ocean are definitely catered to a very particular audience, but they're also so far out of mainstream DC that one would think they're stand alone stories that won't do much to get readers to pick up other titles. Though it's not all bad, because imho, the Harley Quinn animated series is brilliant. But the show has always known what it was, and never tried to say otherwise. Compared to the silliness online with the new MotU show and Kevin Smith's conflicting statements about what the show is about. Now I could be wrong, but it sounds like the new show would be like if CW came out with a new show called Legends of the Dark Knight, and used Batman heavily in the promotional material, but the show is actually about Barbara Gordon realizing she's been a lesbian all along, and bulking up to look like Rhea Ripley to fight crime while she tries to figure out what happened to Bruce.
@CoryTheRaven3 жыл бұрын
@@thecthuloser876 there's a difference between "woke" and "liberal." An example I like to use is X-Men... When I was collecting X-Men in the 1990's, it was a very organically liberal, multicultural concept. The entire book was about the struggle of mutants for acceptance in a world that hates them, with a globally diverse cast where the introduction of new characters was an ongoing part of the lore. That was a world away from now, where comics are pushing inorganic messaging through a very narrow range of tropes, mainly through race and gender-swapping characters, pinkwashing, deeply unlikable Mary Sues, and villainizing of whole demographic groups. Storm being a co-leader of the X-Men is a very different thing from She-Thor clubbing a token misogynist villain with her hamfists or the X-Men being an allegory for minorities from Iceman being turned gay to fill quota.

The changes you’re talking about that were made in the beginning were “growing pains” changes to make the characters and story BETTER for the mythos of He-Man. These changes felt natural, Which is why people fell in love with the brand. The NEW CHANGES that are being made are unnecessary and feels unnatural. It does nothing to further the story of He-Man. These types of new changes are more for political reasons and goes deeper than just providing fun. Anyone with common sense can see that it’s not natural for the art of story

The original concept vs Filmation is a bit like GI Joe where you have the cartoon vs the comics which depict the characters differently. I get there were a lot of changes in the original incarnation of MOTU. He-Man being a barbarian, Zodac Evil before being neutral etc, the two halves of the sword etc. That was while the brand was being formed which is a bit different to using something already established. The 2002 series changed Zodac and introduced King Grayskull and other characters like Dekker. Whether the Revelations series changes work is yet to be seen.

@bobastu3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Good explanation. Comic and cartoon worlds frequently don't mesh well together. The cartoon saw, for the most part, consistency. It's like Hawk and Duke in the GI Joe toy line, the comic and the cartoon. Hawk was released first, blonde hair, same head-sculpt as Flash, featured in the first comic. Duke did not turn up until 23 with Roadblock. In the cartoon we never saw Hawk as a blonde. Scarlett was interested in Duke not Snake Eyes. Fans broadly accept "comic/cartoon differing universe" syndrome. Fans have trouble accepting change that goes against established character traits. In essence, changing a character to fit an unrealistic vision of who the character should become. For example: Teela is an adult. She finds out she has not been included in a secret, that not even the King knew. Her first response is not loyalty to the king, nor is it loyalty to the kingdom. Her first response is anger and selfishness. She throws a temper tantrum, and leaves her sense of loyalty to king and kingdom behind. Because it's all about Teela going all teen angst. It goes against her character model as presented in years of the cartoon. Loyalty to king and kingdom. You speak of evolutionary changes in the story as the writers discover the characters. This is not an evolutionary change for Teela, this is a knee jerk reaction to being the only one not in on the secret, like she is 12.

Hi Spector!! As always awesome vid. Now changes during initial development are OK since they are considered growing pains. But once you established the history is really hard to change characteristics, traits and attributes for characters specially if they are Main Characters. an example of an horrible change is what was done to Luke Skywalker on the Last Jedi. Yes we are not the owners of such franchise but we are certainly the gate keepers since we dictate if the line survive or not. Also.. Movie Bob? Really?

Good perspective. I’m giving the new one a chance and letting news go out the other ear. I remember as a kid. I liked background characters you never really knew about. Starwars was a perfect example of this. All the characters you might from the cantina could become different villains etc in your imagination. Possibly why Boba was such a popular figure. He looked cool and left the imagination up to u to create stories around him because we didn’t know much about him. Original 12” GIJoe Adventure Team was the same way for me. @Spector Creative That original green lady character is called "The Sorceress", not "The Goddess." It was originally Teela who was known as a goddess, but then that aspect of her was moved, and placed with the Sorceress, whose skin was then turned to a human colour. Then she was called "The Goddess" and Teela was said to be a clone of her in the minicomics. This was so the Teela figure could work as both Teela and the Goddess (Who used to be called The Sorceress when she was green.) Back in the original "Lords of Power" days, there were plans for 2 figures. 1) Tee-La (Warrior goddess) and 2) Sorceress (Cobra).

I have to disagree. To me the major factor for the adult MotU fan is escapism. When you grow up life gets more and more serious and more and more complicated. But no matter how much the adversities of life kick you in the face you can always imagine somewhere out in space there's this planet where a brave hero with a magical sword together with his loyal companions defends a mystical castle steeped in legend against an evil miscreant and his henchmen. On Eternia everything is still as simple as it was when we were kids and it always will be. That's the appeal.
@oansun3 жыл бұрын
the appeal is "having the power." That's pretty clear, the lore created for a show is what it is but the appeal of MOTU was always a pretty loose basis to engage in your own play. Every person that is really into MOTU has their own idea of what things are, that's the true appeal. There is room for plenty of complication, the show has it more than I think your memory is allowing to come forth. Watch the series. Also read the mini comics, the Sunday strips, the golden books, the UK comics, the DC comics, the new DC series...theres a lot involved beyond a passing memory of a show you watched and had some toys of and then the pandemic allowed you to get back into a toy hobby a little. I've been with MOTU forever and never left it, its ok if you did but there is always a complication to it

I'm glad they changed stuff, too many people (especially others on KZbin) are riling up people to hate the show for being "political", as if paying off Teela's SUPER IMPORTANT backstory is a bad idea. We're getting first animated appearances of many characters who were only toys, and some that were only in the comics. It's a spiritual sequel to Filmation because SOMEONE owns the rights to the Filmation stuff and it can't be 1 for 1, and different versions of characters means different versions to turn into toys (Seriously, if anyone for 'some reason' dislikes Black King Grayskull, they'll probably use the same mold to make the traditional white one, if a new toy comes out at all)! This is the show being made to appease us old fans, so we don't obsess over and bully children for liking the cgi show coming out later... but this way of hating a show before it even airs is why we get less and less stuff aimed at old fans. Kids don't care if nearly 40 years of very loose lore is exactly canon to whatever, they might just appreciate He-Man riding around on Battle Cat and giving Skeletor a hard time.

I think the problem here stems from that fact that we were told it was continuation of the Filmation series, and it would build off that lore. So fans were expecting things to be like the original show, but with better animation and different voice talents. When more things start to change, people get nervous. Growing up I always was confused why the comics didn't match the cartoon, as I much preferred the cartoon, but its kind of a multiverse now isn't it? The way I see it is that this is one "possible" continuation from the Filmation cartoon. The other being She-Ra POP of course. I don't think She-Ra is in Revelation or even mentioned, but yeah, that was the continuation of the original series. This is just an alternate version of what could be. All in all I just say, lets wait and see. I'm not going to judge Revelation until it comes out and I have seen it.

The difference between the changes done by Mattel pre-Filmmation and what was done by Kevin Smith is simple. Mattel’s changes were done for a brand/ marketing standpoint that would help their brand survive. Kevin Smith’s changes were done solely because he wanted to be the next Ryan Johnson (brutally killing off beloved characters and what not to replace new one) and plus he wanted to address and issue that was never there to begin with in regards to Teela’s involvement in the original show. Not to mention that Kevin Smith also lied to save his own skin from scrutiny after the leaks were put out and his disdain for the brand, even lying about when he watched the show! Lots of characters go through lots of change before they settle into the form that becomes their most popular. At that point certain aspects of the character or world lock into place. People then lock onto and associate how that setup is. Others will add to and make slight variations to those worlds and stories but normally it isn't a big change that shifts ot away from what the fan base would accept. Almost every time they make big world shifts in the property they almost always have to change ot back. So saying it's always been a brand of change is almost misleading because every property especially in comics goes through these shifts until it reaches its form. Batman... Evil Lyn was the "evil warrior goddess" and she wasn't two people. Even in the first mini comic Skeletor calls Teela the warrior goddess.

The biggest issue I've heard (that's been consistent across various groups I interact with) isn't Teela's hair, or King Grayskull being black, but the rumor that Teela WILL replace He-Man and become He-Man or He-Woman AND also become the sorceress. It's just a rumor, but the fact that the main focus and character of the recent trailer is NOT He-Man, but Teela, has lead many to believe that the rumors are true. If for argument's sake, that's what happens ... Wouldn't you agree that this change would be a bridge too far for fans? Considering that the target audience are those who grew up with He-Man in the 80's (Mostly boys now grown men) you can understand why there's a reluctance to accept this change. Again assuming the rumors are true. I personally hope that she's instrumental in bringing He-man back and that the second part (because only Part 1 is coming out on Friday) will be more He-Man focused.
@MungkaeX3 жыл бұрын
Target audience or not, He-Man bridged across the gender divide and was integrated into the play pattern of young girls as well as young boys in the 80’s. That’s actually the reason why She-Ra was originally created in the first place to lean further into this seemingly untapped and previously ignored market.

I do agree. He-Man should be the main character no matter what

Here's the thing though, the trailer and comic seem to be setting up a story where Adam stops relying on He-Man, and steps up to be a hero. Adam is show fighting alongside Teela, and there is a shot of Adam surrounded with the He-Men of Legend.

Constantly changing canon and characters muddies the waters and dilutes the brand making the whole thing an unapproachable mess to outsiders. It would be as if Superman was both born on Krypton and was also somehow born on Earth but got powers from Krypton. People would say "what???" Classics cleaned us the messy past by creating the "He-Men" concept. The Savage He-Man who walked out of a village became Oo-lar a predecessor to the real He-Man. The one true He-Man as you sometimes call him was Prince Adam.

Love the video but I don't think it's a retooling of a character that is the issue with some fans. There are people who are concerned with the type of changes that may happen in the new show. Honestly, I'm more concerned with the quality of the story. If the story is good, makes sense, and honors the core of the characters, I will be very happy with this new incarnation. As much as I love having a new show with the old characters, I would like to see them create a whole new hero in the MOTU universe that will benefit this generation of kids and how they watch their entertainment.

Great video about the changes of this line. As for the show, what is the point of bringing back He-Man when you change around the whole story? I would have rather them make a new series set far off in the future so they could have avoided all this hate from the fans. As an 80s kid, I want to see more "weak guy" becomes strong guy and saves the day vs strong guy becomes weak guy and needs the help of his diverse friends to save the day. Thank goodness, Japanese anime still delivers that out of date but fun to watch stories today.

I’ve always been intrigued by the notion that the original Teela figure was supposed to be played with as two separate toys / characters. Was that ever explicitly told to kids and parents via packaging or in commercials, beyond the title under her name? Otherwise, it’s such a weird (and a little pathetic) stretch. Did any other figures in the line ever do anything similar? Seems more consistent if, like Adam and Cringer, you were supposed to have Teela hold up her snake staff and transform magically into snake armor. Anyhoo…wondering if Mattel ever actually tried to communicate this play pattern of a two-characters-in-one toy.
