GW: What were Randy’s main influences? Rudy Sarzo: His influences were late-’60s, early-’70s English rock guitar players. He didn’t have any R&B influence or anything, so it’s totally English. And classical music because of his schooling. His mother had a lot to do with that, teaching him and influencing him with classical music. So by the time he got to England, he was not like a typical American guitar player who had had the influence of R&B music and country music, because he’d never played that. GW: Were there any particular players he admired? Rudy Sarzo: Yeah, let me tell you who they were. He really admired Gary Moore and Eddie Van Halen. Those were the top two guys he really, really admired.

Back then there were not a lot of options. Pretty much Fenders or Gibsons unless you got something custom, which is was expensive for his club days. When he went to Ozzy and made some money he got his Custom V and Jackson. But Randy's LP was a 72 so the neck wasn't too thick. Pretty much the '68 profile, which kind of slim.

At around 0:25 Eddie Van Halen would’ve had both hands on the fretboard but for Randy it was unnecessary. Randy must’ve had really long fingers and playing in a standard way - left hand on the fretboard and picking with the right - has huge advantages. But this is where I disagree with Eddie as Eddie thought he was the greatest thing since sliced bread, while technically Randy was better. My opinion. (If you play classical guitar - I did for quite a few years - you have to be very disciplined. Randy was a very disciplined player so it was easier for Randy to transition to classical where Eddie would’ve had a harder time.)

This had to be when he was playing for Quiet Riot. I think not long afterwards he was recruited by Ozzy Osbourne, which ironically might’ve been the worst thing to ever happen to Randy Rhoads. But perhaps if Randy does something else he might still be alive. But it was a double-edged sword because Randy became famous but then he died in short order after that.

I clearly remember when I was a youngster, how I like to hear these "prodigy" guitar guys doing their solos and boasting about supposedly being very good. Now, this really annoys me. Boring stuff. Nothing like find out how good a guitarist is when its playing, together with the playing of the other guys, make a song legendary or at least pretty good. Many guitarists could and can do what Randy was doing there but very few could consistently be part of the making of legendary songs or at least a temporary hits.
