I remember back in the 90’s playing local gigs and the whole shred is dead. I never let it affect me. I kept ripping, dive bombing, Squealing, tapping and doing what I like. People always seemed to enjoy it. It’s safe to say that to this day I’m still doing the same thing. lol. They wanted shred to die but I think it held up as good as any other fake news in the 90’s. For Blind Melon to say that about Nuno is quite hilarious. They couldn’t change his strings. Great interview as usual.

I lived in a recording studio in Palmdale CA, in 1988, Russ Parrish was up there recording something with Jeff from Racer X and some other people. He is one of the best players I have ever seen in person. He is SO much better than he is perceived to be. Absolutely SICK player.

I was taking lessons from Joel back in 93. Great guy. Great teacher. Amazing guitar player. What is more amazing is that although he plays the guitar righty, he writes with his left hand.

I have this magazine, and like many, couldn't believe what a disservice it was to any aspiring guitarist who wanted to excel. But the interviews with Satriani and Scorpions were well worth keeping the magazine. I believe that Soldano ad featured Hot 100 amps, and if so they were very affordable at the time. Hosono Guitar Works shut down in the mid or late 90's. Tak Hosono now heads the Ibanez custom shop in Los Angeles.

I remember Shrapnel Records as signing 'Shred Metal' artists and I loved it. Shred, to me, was playing super fast and clean. I used to say, 'I want to be able to shred some day.' So, no, for me and my circle of friends, shred was a badge earned from many hours in shred shed. Some people hated it, but that didnt make it an insult. SHAME: Fire and Ice: Loved it. No idea what the guy is talking about. Fresh sound for YJM. Nitro: I think they were supposed to be somewhat tongue and cheek, with their tall wigs, triple neck guitars, etc. Still, vocalist was as insane as Angelo-Batio. Poison: Poor CC. He tried so hard. Still they had some great hits. Whitesnake: To this day I dont even know if I like that album. It went a weird direction away from hard rock and more towards the Led Zepplin era of rock.

I’m a 90’s guy. Grew up on grunge, nu metal, pop punk, and guitar solos were not cool when i was a teenager learning guitar. We considered shredders to be stuck in the 80’s and i never understood the obsession with playing fast

I would take that “bad mouthing” part of the magazine with a grain of salt. It reads more like editorial trying to create some controversy and trying to angsty. Most media was immature did whatever they could to attract readership. I’m sure guitar mags were hurting in sales by that year. I still ate all those magazines up though! Loved browsing them over and over. Miss them!

You found a thing…..get these cats to peruse these old guitar mags. Remember, before the internet, guitar magazines were super important. That can’t be overstated.

I was born in 1985. I started playing guitar in 1997 or so, during the apex (or maybe the nadir) of the post-grunge/nu-metal era. And yknow what? it SUCKED! You couldn't turn on rock radio and hear really great guitar playing from new bands- even the concept of a guitar solo was seen as tasteless (pretty incredible, considering how much tasteless crap that movement embraced wholeheartedly)! Shred wasn't dead, but it was certainly in a coma- and you'd think that a guitar rag would MOURN that instead of celebrating it. Lots of great guitar playing and great rock music in the 90s, for sure, but both at the time and today, I spent way more time listening to Steve Vai and Van Halen. Also, Slip of the Tongue is an underrated masterpiece, unfairly maligned by nearly everyone. Vai plays like his hair is on fire the whole album, and it's the first use of a 7 string guitar on a rock album!!!! HISTORIC!
@MastersofShredКүн бұрын
Well said man! You hit the nail on the head! 👏 I dug some of the Nu-Metal stuff but like you said, Shred was in a Coma during that time. Especially in mainstream music. I think Avenged Sevenfold changed that when Bat Country broke out 😯👍🎸🎸🎸

Yes, I remember 1993. If you played an Ibanez people looked down on you. I'm more of a blues guy. I loved the Jeff Healey band. The Feel this album came out in 1993 and I think it's great! I'm also a big Richie Sambora fan. Bon Jovi's keep the Faith is one of their best albums. All in my very humble opinion. :)

You can thank that craptastic corporate buttrock (glam) for ruining the landscape for shred. The conglomerate exploited that formula until it was burning from both ends. Luckily, for those of us who were actually educated about music and didn't need MTV / radio, there were some great players that hardly get any credit. The early to mid 90s was a pretty damn good time for actual Metal. Rand Burkey Paul Masvidal Jason Gobel Michael Romeo Tommy Vetterli Chuck Shuldiner Rocky George Jim Matheos {and quite a few more that I'm forgetting}
