Honestly I thought the fact they used this song on the genocide route much more disturbing than if they were to just use the regular battle theme but slowed down. The fact that this music is so peppy and intense almost gave me the impression that clover was getting pumped up by what they were doing. Like they truly felt that slaughtering all of these monsters was the strong heroic thing to do and they were in the midst of an epic and challenging battle. When in reality most of the monsters were harmless and just trying to escape. Really clever stuff and definitely puts you more in the shoes of clover's twisted since of justice on the genocide route.

Agreed, it was a nice detail, i still kind of wish that some of regular enemies got Tsunderplane treatment and got unique death animation though. Would've left even bigger impact imo. Also you can do betrayal kills on many normal enemies too, act until you could spare 'em just to put a hole in 'em afterwards and OHKO them. Pretty sad to watch.

Clover was no hero nor was he a villain. He was in control of his actions and chose to kill out of justice for the humans who died. Even if they weren't a threat, those who stood in his way faced judgement, and his judgement is all monsters need to be destroyed.

@der8201 He needed to get stronger so that he could serve justice to Asgore (who by the way ABSOLUTELY deserves the fate he does in the geno run). It was his only option to survive and to serve justice. What you should take from this is that Asgore sucks and all of these deaths of humans and monsters are on HIS hands, NO ONE needed to be murdered he could have left the underground with Chara's soul but he didn't because he's a coward.

@@daycejohnson There are still going to be human and monster deaths no matter what he does. Even if he took Chara's soul and went to kill humans outside of the underground that would have started another war/caused more death that he reasonably didn't want after everything he has been through. The only reason he is going with the plan to obtain 7 human souls is just to keep as much peace as he possibly can. And we know from Undertale's neutral endings that if he tried to enact a policy that made it so that monsters would have to be peaceful to humans he would have been overthrown. You can't win in his position. Also doing the genocide route absolutely ruins Clover personality wise. They lose pretty much all of their compassion and have developed severe violent tendencies. They are a child who has the ability to kamehameha anything at any given moment and also might be able to end the world. They were willing to kil completely innocent and kind-hearted monsters like Martlet when they didn't need to so who knows what terrible things they'll do on the surface. They aren't going to live a happy life after the geno route and they ruin the lives of everyone in the underground and make it impossible for future humans like Frisk to leave without killing anyone. It sucks that Clover dies in pacifist but I honestly think thats a better alternative to this.

Genocide Route spoilers 1 is pretty much the main motif of Enemy Retreating, not only does it play over and over in the form of piano backing, but because it's used in Trial By Fury, END OF THE LINE_, and Retribution. Martlet's talk dialogue in the area before East Mines on a Pacifist/Neutral Route reveals that when monsters focus on battles, melodic vibrations echo from them, which their opponent can hear too, and she wonders if humans can find their own melody if determined enough. I like to think Enemy Retreating is Clover's theme as they become more determined to bring justice upon the monsters, and that the monsters now hear this track as some sort of Clover's "boss theme", as at this point it can be argued that they're actively attacking monsters first and not the other way around.

I also had this feeling of strangeness at first but then I started to look at it from the monsters' perspective. As if this song was for them and not for us. The monsters realized that the fallen human is worse than they imagined and so they had to put more effort into their attacks. The music transitions from calm to louder.
