I love how Brann can be one of the best drummers without needing a drumkit as big as half the stage
@puppetmaster85513 жыл бұрын
Still true, guy is one of the sickest drummers on the planet and does it on a super small kit compared to most metal drummers
@BriskyShark Жыл бұрын
Not even two bass drums, very minimal and he somehow does more stuff than most prog bands out there, he is seriously one of my fav drummers of all time
@someoneelse1018 ай бұрын
@@BriskySharksome drummers find a double pedal easier to deal with than two bass drums and some who used two bass drums have resorted to using a double pedal as an alternative for one reason: ergonomics. Having a second bass drum moves everything too far in either direction for comfort if it's an unfamiliar set up. Especially if you don't have a bass drum attachment for the hi hat stand

Exactly. Part of what's so cool about Mastodon is that they're not "above" the fans like other bands. They're down to earth, hardworking musicians who still appreciate every screaming college student who just blew off a term paper to have the time of their life =D

How Mastodon wasn't the most successful metal band of the 2000's is beyond me. They miles ahead of all the metalcore/screamo bands from that era in terms of talent and creativity. Their sound is just so diverse too. One minute they're melting your face, next minute you're on a trip, then relaxed and back to gritty.

It's not the size of your bone, dawg...it's how you bury it. Brann Dailor is EVERY awesome guitarist's dream. He doesn't TRY to stand out and be all flashy and frivolous. I've seen Mastodon probably six times. The first time was that furnace Fest 2003 here in Birmingham. The second time was in a little dive bar the oldest rock and roll bar here in Birmingham opening for clutch. Around that time I got really into hardcore and me and my friends would drive over to Atlanta to go to The venue called the masquerade and we'd go see converge or cave in and Thursday and Brent would always be there standing in line just like any other fan. I remember you drove this white Geo Metro probably a 95 model something early. But he's always be cool to like hang out and chill and it wasn't until about 4 years later than I found out that he's actually from Birmingham and went to Mountain Brook High School and basically saw the early version of what would become Mastodon here at the Nick. So he just jumped on that and moved to Atlanta. And now watched them open up for a converge open up for metalocalypse Slayer I mean the list goes on. They were great. I have many more stories of Troy humping my leg at the Nick but those are stories I will tell in the future. By the way there wasn't any sex involved it was just him being drunk and stupid.

One of the better ways to start a show. My personal favorite is still Carparthian Forests frontman (I forgot his name) walking up, introducing the band, they start playing, him grabbing an empty pitcher and then starting shit in it, right there on stage. Had an immensely fun time though.

And Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher are just soooo in tune with each other, plus Brann Dailor on the drums is a freakin powerhouse, impressive that he makes little use of the double pedals considering the style of mussc. After these 2 Crystal skull is probs my next fave. x

And I would completely agree with you that the state of mainstream music (especially pop, modern rock, and the more post-hardcore tinged metalcore) is pretty sad. But if you dig a little deeper, you'll find that quality music is alive and kicking. I recommend Symphony X, Angra ('Temple of Shadows' is their magnum opus IMO), Between the Buried and Me, Sonata Arctica, Blind Guardian, Children of Bodom (though they're in a slump), Imperanon, Oh Sleeper, Shadow Gallery, and Dream Theater to start.

@anewt72690 i can see how they are obnoxious nowadays, but if you look at the kind of people they were in the 80s, they were the ultimate expression of true heavy metal. gritty, dirty, simple dress, partying, drinking, nothing but the music. but musically, i think its undeniable the influence metallica has had on mastodon. mastodon just took metallica's sound to a different level. And i think mastodon represents nowadays what metallica represented in the 80s and early 90s. the kings of metal.
