Mastodon crams more outrageously brilliant music in this one song than most other bands do in their entire discography.
@LemursManLemurs1 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, this song is amazing. And you're so spot on regarding this album. This album alone outweighs what the vast majority of metal bands out there have or ever will accomplish. I also love Black Sabbath just as much as Mastodon and for similar reasons. Killing Yourself to Live, Paranoid, NIB, and Planet Caravan are my favorite Sabbath Tracks. I am fucking in love with Sabbath. Have been since I first heard them growing up. (Early 80s for reference). I got a few bands for you to check out. The two bands were heavily influence by Sabbath and are incredibly talented and unique in their own right. Both bands are fairly similar to Mastodon at times too. I put them both right up there with Sabbath honestly. That's my opinion at least. Anyway...Check out Electric Wizard and Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats. Good intro songs to them are for Electric Wizard: Funeralopolis, Electric Wizard (self-titled song off their self-titled album lol), and Saturnine. For Uncle Acid: Deaths Door, Night Creeper, and Mt Abraxas. Mind Control is Uncle Acid's Crack The Skye, and Witchcult Today or Dopethrone (hard to pick) are Electric Wizard's. But yeah. Fucking love this track and album. Hail Mastodon! Also, if you end up liking the song Funeralopolis by Wizard... You may like the band DopeThrone. They are a super heavy sludge metal band. Chameleon Witch and Riff Dealer are two fantastic songs by them. And if you don't like any of this stuff then that's cool. Just like talking Metal music.

This album still remains one of the greatest albums ever created. The lyrics, story, and musicianship are all top notch and of the highest quality. This song especially, it just sounds like epic conclusion song, whereas most albums the last song ends and you're just like "cool, good album its over". But this, this wraps up the journey and sounds like something that would play at the end of a 2 hour epic movie that just wraps up and ends in a glorious fashion so when it ends, you know the journey and story are over. Has to be one of my favorite Mastodon songs, a journey through the deepest weirdest corners of an alien world, especially Oblivion and this one always make me feel like I'm in a tiny little space ship on my way through wonders never seen before... Its that certain magic that made me fall in love with them, they later then convinced me with all their other stuff to like them even more

Bought this album in 2009 just as I bought my 1st house. I hope for those that are struggling to buy their 1st house that they get a magnificent soundtrack to enjoy the reward for all their sacrifice and commitment. Wishing you a reward for all your efforts. by the way that 8:19 change up brings tears to my ears.....this whole song is God.

This album happens to be the perfect length for a 10km run. I only run in winter (I cycle the rest of the year), and usually set off at 6am withe goal of getting to work by 7am. In the cold and darkness the roaring fire that is this album just sets the perfect feeling and pace, and keeps me going. I've probably heard the whole thing a thousand times by now. It never gets old.

One wonderful aspect of this song is that it intentionally touches and brings closure to the first four albums. You can say the same of the entire album, beginning with the cover art having all four symbols, but this song really feels like a perfect epilogue.
@topuscuatro2 жыл бұрын
Could you please explain this??
@LegionHimself2 жыл бұрын
@@topuscuatro It mentions the other three elements, for one (fires/set the world ablaze; the Sea; the Earth). There is also what sounds like nods to individual songs, like Crystal Skull. It all goes with the sense of finality of the whole song. The lyrics are about the past and going to rest, and the music sounds like mourning and warning at once.
@AxiomApe2 жыл бұрын
@@LegionHimself Yup. And this one being Air /Ether It’s how I always interpreted it anyways lol
@LegionHimself2 жыл бұрын
@@AxiomApe It’s explicitly about air/ether/the void. The first four albums are a series and after that the band retired the classic cover design with the traditional logo/font/symbols; at least until Emperor of Sand, which is also meant to be about a single element, more or less - death.

This was the first song I ever saw them play live. I know I'm a little late to the game, but these dudes are the real deal. They have a unique chemistry and have forged a new path for metal bands. There's no pretention; no bullshit. Yes, it's commercial. But so was Zeppelin, Ozzy, Megadeth, Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, all the great metal bands.

Lyrics The Last Baron I'd guess they would say We could set this world ablaze Please, please take my hand, please take my soul to rest So we can always be around It is hard to see Through all the haze at the top of the trees Hold my head on stable ground Watch as the Earth falls all around Please, please take my hand, please take my soul to rest So we can always be around Faltering footsteps, dead end path All that I need is this wise man's staff Encased in crystal, he leads the way I guess they'd say we could set the world ablaze Please, please take my hand, please take my soul to rest So we can always be around I guess they would say We can set the world ablaze Hold my head on stable ground Watch as the Earth falls all around Take my black soul Alive in the fires that burn my skin Guide my eyes all through this maze I guess they'd say we could set the world ablaze All that I have seen Standing on the edge, the foot of precipice Floating in the sea Past the king of swords, quickly to the shore The last baron The last baron Ghost of man Surrounds me in my slumber I have no fear As your wing is my shelter Cyanide he craves Coursing through his veins, providing him with strength To see this to the end Afraid of psychic eyes, faith in mystic power The last baron The last baron Will he save me? Will he save me? I was standing staring at the world And I can't see it I was standing staring at the world And I can't see it I was standing staring at the world And I can't see it I was standing staring at the world And I still can't see it I was standing staring at the world And I can't see it I was standing staring at the world And I still can't see it All that I have seen Standing on the edge, the foot of precipice Floating in the sea Past the king of swords, quickly to the shore The last baron The last baron Ghost of man Surrounds me in my slumber I have no fear As your wing is my shelter Cyanide he craves Coursing through his veins, providing him with strength To see this to the end Afraid of psychic eyes, faith in mystic power The last baron The last baron Will he save me? How this riff comes in. The complexity of Playing it properly (sorry most covers play it wrong with hammer ons and pull offs on the D string) and again the way it’s incorporated into this progressive master piece is so bizzare yet so perfect. Literally unreal.
