Mat Armstrong's Classic BMW E24 635 CSI - Stripping The Engine Bay & Axle - Finding More Rust!

Yorkshire Car Restoration

Жыл бұрын

We Finally fully expose that rotten chassis rail on Mat Armstrong's BMW E24 by dropping the front axle and stripping the engine bay. Safe to say we snapped quite a few bolts and uncovered yet more rust! Surprise surprise! At least we can see what rust we have to tackle on this classic BMW. We also stripped the wiring loom back to the bulkhead to get it out of the way.
Believe it or not, dropping the front subframe was a quick and easy job! We expected to be launching the sledge hammer at it. In the next episode we get to cutting the bad rust out and start of the fabrication of the chassis rail!
Check out Mat Armstrong's channel where this build began
Check out the other parts to this series where we show the extent of the rust and start stripping the car. We found tons of rust!
If you did enjoy the video, please consider subscribing and hitting that like button, it really does help us out a lot!

@@real-eyes-realise-real-lies I'd be surprised. There is going to be a huge amount of labour that goes into this, parts will be silly money as it's old. I think people restore cars like this for the enjoyment of it and not for profit. It's a shame as that is why so many are left to rust. I salute them for doing it though, love an 80's restoration!

The plain fact of the matter is that the large percentage of remaining E24s are like this. Even tidier looking examples can hide nasty rot very well. You either buy an extremely cosseted historied example - or embark on an extensive and costly rebuild. As a showcase this shoud be epic. Really looking forward to the progress on this. 👍👍

How on earth you can save this, i don't know. I think you've got a harder job on this, than Matt. I think once you've all worked your magic, this car will be beautiful. That's what i like about these types of restoration videos, people seeing value and importance in things which most people would discard. I have an Audi A4 that was nearly scrapped because of water ingress. It's an S-Line and it's beautiful. I still very very much, appreciate all of the work that went into making my car. What i don't like about your beemer, is that BMW would have known what would happen to all of the metal, but they went ahead and charged people a lot of money for it anyway. Good luck, fellas

This is going to be a great project for the channel, I am really interested to see how you get on with this. It is truly a very bad example. I personally know of two of these cars that have been scrapped for rust issues, and they were both way better than this one. I just love how you guys are not fazed by anything at all, it gives me great hope that one day I might get my 840Ci back on the road. Obviously, financially it does not compute. If it is the same deal as my E31, any parts that are still available from BMW have been inflated cost-wise to an unbelievable level, e.g. there are rubber seals around the front and rear screens, the screens are bonded in, these seals are mainly cosmetic to fill the gap between the screen and the body. My car has to have them, they are still available from BMW Germany and are £300 each. It is easy to see all the parts that will have to be replaced on your car, add that cost to your welding and fabrication costs, that is a £30K project, easy, probably before it gets painted.
