4x5 Velvia on the light table is stunning. I can’t imagine how amazing 8x10 Velvia looks.

If you want to avoid getting hooked on a new large format size: 1. Don't look at the ground glass. 2. NEVER look at a slide on the light table. I'm too far gone, but there's still hope for everyone out there watching!
@nickswisher67594 жыл бұрын
I love the last two images, you really captured what it feels like to be there with those two. It's also insane that you were able to get good exposures with that crazy lighting. Your in the field stuff always makes for a great watch!

Thanks for the kind words Nick! It's always a great feeling when slides turn out, but it's also super nerve-wracking waiting for them to come back from the lab!

I love Large Format Friday. Perhaps I was jaded by Kodachrome and Velvia 30 years ago, but I've never really been into Portra for Landscapes for the reasons you show in the first shot. But I was impressed by what it did on the rim. Thanks Matt.

Man, if it weren't for the cost and lack of a more versatile 400-speed option, all I would ever shoot is slide film. The color rendition is just so superior despite the limited dynamic range.

Thanks Nick! So it's not a slide film, but word on the street is there's going to be a fast LF color option hitting the market soon!

I was just out shooting some color 8x10 autumn color last weekend and hope to do more this weekend, too. So this was a fun watch today! I was recently gifted a Kodak 2-D 8x10 and already had a 12" Commercial Ektar for my Korona 8x10s, so I decided to make it a Kodak Trifecta and loaded up some 8x10 E100 for a Kodak/Kodak/Kodak outing. Still need to get my shots sent off for developing! Thanks, as always, for all that you do for LF, Mat!
@MatMarrash4 жыл бұрын
Hey Christopher thanks for the comment! That's a great combo you're working with! E100 is the slide film emulsion that renders exactly the way I "see" the world. Keith Canham is organizing a special order for E100 8x10 soon and I can already feel my bank account hurting!

Velvia is fun to shoot. I understand why the old timers call it “Disneychrome”. Fall is definitely my favorite time for it too. Also I just landed a drone real estate gig in Hocking Hills so I can’t wait to get back down there - it’s so beautiful.

Tricky Velvia with its low Dynamic Range haha. I shot some velvia and provia in my previous trip. Always with Grad filter (0.9) for the sky, however it is still "gone" on my final images.. Slide films on lightbox is just a wow

Agreed! Velvia sometimes makes me feel like I'm taking a final exam in a challenging college class. Always checking and double-checking those meter readings, filter factors, etc.

I am newer to 4x5 after shooting years of 35mm and medium format. I have shot black and white and Ektar 100 color negative. I’m really thinking I am going to just shoot color transparencies for color.

I am a B&W photographer but I have some Velvia and Portra sitting in my freezer which I've been reluctant to shoot because of the cost (film & development) and I don't have a way printing color anymore. However, this has been a nice kick in the butt that I need to go out and shoot it. thanks

Lovely video and beautiful photos! Those red leaves on Velvia, gorgeous! But I got mildly triggered haha. You said you could shoot something higher resolution. Higher resolution than 8x10? I assume you mean ultra-large-format then? :) I recall Ben Horne had some 8x10 Velvia 50 drum scanned and it was like 900 megapickles. I know Velvia 100 isn't the same stuff but that's still a TON of resolution. Only thing I can think of is the Hassy medium format digital system, but doesn't go up to 900 and costs as much as a luxury car. You mentioned also scanning C-41 and my scan game is also not amazing. My potential solve for that was to try out RA4. Chemicals are in the mail so I won't be giving it a go for maybe another couple of weeks, but it's something I wanted to try out. Particularly for harder to scan color emulsions (looking at you Ektar). Could be something to consider as well - 8x10 RA4 contact prints sound amazing!
@MatMarrash4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Tim! Maybe resolution wasn't the best way to describe it, but there are definitely some 100MP options that are more convenient than 8x10. In the exact right conditions 8x10 can't be beat, but there's a reason the best selling cameras out there aren't in camera stores. It's funny you mention RA-4, as I have a lot of those materials around, just haven't used them the way they're intended to...yet!
@m00dawg4 жыл бұрын
@@MatMarrash Yeah I was kinda scared away from RA4 for the longest time but, funny enough all my RA4 stuff got here today so I've been trying it for the first time this evening. It's...different :) I like it, really different way of approaching things. I'm still a black and white printer at heart but I think in the right mood, and with the right subject, yeah I kinda get the draw of it now.

Worrying about 2019 expired film and here I am shooting 2008 Portra 400NC and 2001 Velvia 50 on 8x10! I like chromes but I could never stand the purple cast on Velvia 100.
@MatMarrash4 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. The magenta can get out of hand pretty quickly, even on fresh V100. Now expired Portra NC, there's something that ages like fine wine!
@Beano_z4 жыл бұрын
8x10 slide film is just phenomenal, either on the light table or scanned! Having said that, Portra has its benefits and is it true that Portra 400 is more saturated than Portra 160?
@MatMarrash4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question and comment! While I don't think the differences are as apparent in large format, Portra 160 tends to have a softer palette than Portra 400. To get the two to look a little bit closer to each other, try shooting them both at 160 with normal C41 processing.
