Sounds to me like it just had the original plates put back on. HPI are a devil sometimes as you can get red alerts for the car being written off when actually it was a different car wearing the old owners private plate

Insurer wrote off the vehicle against its original plates, rather than the custom plate. Probably this was to avoid just the issue you describe; the private plate flagging the owners' next car as a write off also.

I bought a crash damaged sport car that had been professionally repaired and talked to the original owner. Eventually owned the car for eight years and sold it privately. It was a good car.)

You need to invest in a few telescoping measuring Trams so you can easily check frames and sub structures for square and check center sections for diamond. Hell of a lot better than using new parts as a measuring tool. Retired body man here, love the videos brother!

Drop the engine sump and take off one of the rod end caps. Check the bearing as it will confirm if the engine was still running (and the rod bearings are ruined) when the car crashed. Hopefully when the front crash sensor deployed the air bags the safety fuse in the battery positive supply also blew and the engine cut out immediately. Fingers crossed for you in any case Matt....

drop the sump, check the big end and main shells for scoring or damage, that will tell you if its been run for a long while with no oil! Carry on the Great Content Mat!!!

Do not shoot me as a messenger of bad news! Considering all the information you should assume the engine suffered oil starvation. You have some choices: A) Close your eyes and choose the simple way: replace the sumps, fill up the oils and run. It could be run. But you (and the future owners) will never know how long does the car runs. It could be one year, two years who knows. B) Take a deep breath and investigate the degree of the oil starvation. You have to assume the worst case. You have to remove the engine and transmission. Disassemble them completely. Check everything regarding the friction marks and burned surfaces, tolarences on the bottom, mid and the top as well, including turbos. If you are lucky than the oil starvation was light and no need to change parts. If not than do the calculation and decide whether is worth to buy an usable engine instead of replacing parts. The same procedure for the transmission. You have to disassembe the full unit including the mechatronic unit to check the damage. And this is just the engine and the trans. These checking procedures and repairs DIY only for the very advanced mechanics. Take this into consideration. I have a feeling that this car is even a deeper hole than the Mercedes C63. Be wise and know when to fold. It is not about the pride. It is about the luck: you tried and lost the bet: the sumps were broken. It happens all the time with all the people. The only people became broke who will not able to realize when to exit. Sell it and take the difference not as a loss but as a business education fee. What we learnt from it? Take the next tour with one jack, copule of wrenches, inspection camera and mechanic dress. Lift the car, get access for the camera to check the bottom of the engine and the trans. By the way if you ask permission to do this from the owner on phone and got refuesal than you have the answer what you looking for, no need to check it all. Good luck!

I have a feeling the car has been written off in 2016 and now its been written off again, what did the HPI check say? YP66YHX looks like it was the plate assigned to the vehicle at original registration and the fact than it says it was recorded as a total loss 31/10/2016 and now again on 27/02/2020 is ringing alarm bells. Maybe the previous owner assigned the private plate to try and throw people off when they HPI check the car. I would check over the rest of the car for previous repairs. Hope it works out Matt, but something doesn't add up on this one bud.

Btw with BMWs theres usually a little hex alan key screw under the car near the gearbox. If your screw it in, it puts the car in neutral and you can roll it without skates. For next time if you ever need to do it.
