Match Fishing Southfield Reservoir NuFish Feeder King Q7 July 2020

This week sees me heading back to DDAA Southfield Reservoir, match fishing in the NuFish Feeder King Qualifier 7. Although still out of sorts, the reservoir had been starting to produce a few skimmers and bream in the DDAA matches leading up to the event.
There aren't many options when it comes to the Feeder King at Southfield Reservoir, the rules dictate, feeder fishing only with natural baits and long hooklengths so all you can do is pick 2 or 3 lines and hope some fish are in front of you.
I opt for a 48m line long range feeder fishing for bream, a medium line at 30m and a short backup line at 18m just in case the wind brought the fish close in.
With 60 anglers fishing each of the 10 qualifiers of the Feeder King, Southfield Reservoir is split into 3 zones of 20 anglers with the winner of each zone qualifying for the final in October. Would I get a decent draw on some fish? Would the bream be willing to feed again? Watch on to find out.

Unlucky John, Always frustrating and you never know on that venue, it does the very best heads in :) Still interesting watch and picked a couple of things up to try as I was lucky enough to get through on a very tight first qualifier. Good luck on the rest of the qualifiers and thanks for giving me some interest back to river fishing with the vids. Soon as I am able healthwise I am going to get out on them!

Great vid again , I felt ya pain with the crack off . Looks a tough venue when it’s blowing like that people don’t realise until they actually sit and fish in those conditions.🎣👍🏻

Yes it's hard work setting up in that wind. After the crack off the braid blew into the rocks and got stuck, I had all on to get it out. Worst thing was having to fish a long hooklength into a facing wind, it kept blowing at me and catching on everything, frustrating most of the time but rewarding when you get amongst them.

Great video. A frustrating match on a huge wild water. I was willing that tip to pull right round nice n' slow, and to see a big slab on the end to give you a much needed lift. A good effort on a rock hard day.

Great that as always John just need to land on a few better stamp fish because it's not that you need loads like these divy commercials to win. Ha. That was a roach bream hybrid just had more bream than roach I've got Ide bream hybrids in lake now but don't tell kev Wincup will have me locked up in looney bin says it's not possible. Ha. 🎣👍💪

Get yourself a Casio G-shock watch with vibrate function - saves you messing about with a stopwatch They have a one button press countdown function that you set to your interval time and cos it vibrates on your wrist no alarms to annoy anyone. They are very robust watches ideal for angling.

I have a Garmin Fenix that will do that, I just prefer to keep the stopwatch visible on my bait tray and adjust my timings as I see fit.

It was bloody hard fishing on that day. Poxy weather , enjoyable to watch , the only thing i would add is i would have used particle baits not meal.

Always a tough choice to know what to use for the best. I don't think anything was working for the best part of this "summer" though. Just hard fishing every session.

Hi Jim. The long range rod I use a Browning black viper fd850 reel with 0.10 matrix submerge braid. The other reels were a Shimano Stradic 3000 GTM RC and an old Shimano Exage 2500 on the short rod, both of those on Browning cenex 5lb feeder mono. I like the smaller reels for balance on my sphere rods and to be honest I could probably throw 50m no problem on the 12ft coupled with the Stradic.

Hello John just wanted to ask why do you think you was getting line twists on your leader when it appears you were using two swivels on your rig,what are your thoughts on this ? Thankyou.

At what point in the video was that? My opinion on line twist is either the swivels aren't free enough, the line is so supple it gets affected more than a stiffer line - I might try flourocarbon hooklengths in future and the speed of the long retrieve with a high gear ratio reel without a fish on will all contribute. It's virtually impossible to eliminate completely, just like all these anti tangle rigs, they're only so-so effective. The heli-rig probably works best of all.

Hey John it was when you lost the rig,thanks for your reply. I've never understood the role of a swivel on a running feeder rig cos the line revolves within the swivel! I agree with the helicopter rig but not allowed on many waters,for me it's the hooklentgh swivel that's important cos the swivel is under duress from both ends,I now use the evolution quick clips from matrix inline and they revolve on the line like the helicopter rig with no swivel

@@robertwren8878 ah ok, that hooklength was going on fresh, it hadn't been straightened off the storage spool and the wind was blowing it around, it was fine after that - I can't recall getting any line significant twists on retrieve on the day so I think my rigs were working. Interesting you use the clips, I'll look them up. I quite like matrix stuff.
