The judges made a mistake matching whale with fish. A whale is not a fish. It's a mammal. Also, they're still vacillating on whether or not to match general with specific.

Gene and the judge let Suzie oust Jane by allowing her to change her ears lowered answered. Ironically Jim's answer that eliminated Suzie was ear also. Suzie made over $6,000 off her one lucky win, so she can't be too upset.

From one redhead to another, we stumble into the first week of Patti Deutsch. She was predominantly known as a voice actress, and used that nasally voice to great effect in films and television shows. She had an incredibly off-the-wall sense of humour which was reflected in her answers. While she didn't match as much as Fannie Flagg or Betty White, she still matched more than the likes of Dick Martin, Bill Daily or David Doyle. Patti clocked up 42 weeks on the CBS Match Game and one week in syndication. We'd see her husband, comedy writer Donald Ross, on the show the following year, and in 1978 we'd also see Max, her first son. Her passing in July last year at the age of 73 was mourned by the Match Game fandom. Only week of the other debut player, veteran character actor Jim Backus. He'd been the voice of Mr. Magoo (which led to a meeting between him and Marilyn Monroe), he'd been stranded on a desert island with Gilligan, he'd played James Dean's father in Rebel Without a Cause, he'd been in films with Humphrey Bogart, Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn and with all the comedy greats in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. He'd go on to travel back in time to the early 20th century to become mayor of New England coastal town Passamaquaddy when it was visited by an orphan and a funny-looking green dragon. Third week for Game Show Poet Laureate Nipsey Russell and sixth week for Betty White. Now for some technical observations (as pointed out below. Thanks Stupid Game Show Answers 2018 and Sam Mitchell for these!) - this is the first episode of Match Game to have the short end credits on the side of a rotating box. The contestants and panelists have also swapped microphones.

I love the show, but I have to disagree; Patti Deutsch, was a terrible player, worse that Brett. She only cared about coming up with her own funny answers and never showed a care about matching the contestants, you know, the purpose for the game.. giving cute answers had its time, but she never showed any care for helping the contestants.

I still like to know why Patti and Bob Barker, for that matter, were not around to do MGSynd. Bob wasn't on much during the 70's but Patti was and she only did one week of synd. I missed her after that and wish she could have been on more. I am guessing she didn't do MG/HS either..

I also wonder sometime on the super match is they are behind it loading the answers after the contestant chooses a word to determine who wins and how much.

As a game designer myself, it REALLY aggravates me that they never seem to figure out their own rules on whether a general guess by the contestant matches specific answers by the panel. So many guests were shafted in this way - especially in these early shows. Of COURSE Emmy got 6 in the first round when they were in "general matching specific mode" AND they considered a whale as a fish - SO dumb.
