There's a big problem with the question about landing at the North Pole. Penguins are at the SOUTH Pole, not the North Pole.

I said polar bear. 👀 Agreed no penguins are at north pole.

It was 1973. Rampant inflation, oil embargos and drugs everywhere, no one cared where penguins were from.

@@manchieros I don't think these people cared much about inflation, oil, and drugs either. They cared mostly about mugging for the camera.

5:29 I love the ridiculously-timed "audience applause"--which the folks behind the scenes glaringly made obvious was canned when they threw it in at the totally wrong time!

I wonder if the winner who selected Richard and was handed Richard's winning card is 1) still alive, 2) has family that can write an update, and 3) tell us what became of Dawson's card. Richard was always cool and always wanted the little folks to win - I miss all of these actors and actresses and I greatly miss that generation of Americans - if family reads this, please share your story - thank you!

Exactly. but way back in the 70's people weren't as worldly about things.
@dmnemaine2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnSmith-kz8yo The question writers should have been aware of that. They were obviously looking for "penguin" as the response (it's a cold climate bird, and a turkey is a bird). It would have been a simple matter to write the question with South Pole instead of North Pole.

I would have thought Bill Cullen, Loretta Swit, Richard Dawson, and Cass Elliott (not so much Jack Klugman and Brett Somers0 were smart enough to know that there are NO penguins at the North Pole. Penguins are found in Antarctica (the South Pole).

Proley-Goldstein, round 1, question B: "Okay, first off, the bodice is part of the dress, not anything underneath it, so that's what that's about. Second, in a vain attempt to clean up this show: GARTER!" (Bzzt!) Question A: "Well, rather than import a penguin all the way from Antarctica, I'm pretty sure my mother would just stuff a SEAL." (Bzzt!) Round 2, question B: "It's not so much that they don't know it, as that they don't know what it means: In the MERMAID!" (Bzzt!) Question A: "You, stew, flue, brew, crew… no, I'll stick with GLUE." (Ding!) (And now we have an interesting situation. If I were in any slot except Loretta's, we'd now have to go to a tie-breaker; if I were in Loretta's slot, Eleanor would actually win 5-4. So let's assume that the whole studio suddenly got whisked to Narnia just as Loretta was giving her STEW answer, remained there long enough for Bill to win the tie-breaker, and then returned to our world without any time having elapsed. Hey, strange things happened in the '70s.) Super Match, part 1: (if asked before Richard) VAN WINKLE (if asked after Richard) TORN Part 2: PIE Goldstein-Osborn, round 1, question B: "Well, it depends. If he's standing up, you can spelunk in it; if he's lying down, you can SWIM." (Ding!)
