If boot was a match for foot, and horn was a match for trombone, instrument should have matched as well. Then again, it was 43 years ago.

Nope. Tying a tongue to a foot or boot will have the same result, horn was a bit iffy, but the vagueness worked for it in this case (horn section), unlike French horn, while "instrument" was too vague, it could apply to drums, grand piano, etc.
