One of the most hilarious game shows ever! The fact that the FCC was so strict with "off-color" remarks is what made these old game shows so funny: the innuendo and double entendras only worked so brilliantly BECAUSE of the censors! Now, I'm all for free speech, but you have to admit, this contestant's answer wouldn't cause anyone to bat an eye, let alone laugh so hysterically today. MATCH GAME, Bob Eubank's NEWLYWED GAME, and Richard Dawson's FAMILY FUED: classic comedic humor!

Some people may not know it but Gene was referencing his time as an announcer on The Tonight Show when Steve Allen was the host of it in the mid 1950s in New York. Gene was a very talented man who was always laughing and certainly was the perfect host for Match Game (in both incarnations of it).

I think the "walkout" was inspired by an incident on the Tonight Show in the late 60's. Johnny Carson made a fairly innocent off-color remark to Debbie Reynolds and, as a joke, she faked outrage and walked off the set, immediately followed by the rest of the guests and Ed McMahon, leaving Johnny by himself. It was a funny, spontaneous moment and for many years was included in the Tonight Show's anniversary clips.

The only regulars on the Match Game that ever did anything else on TV was Charles Nelson Reilly and Richard Dawson. With all the other regulars, they were making tons of money on this game show because they were married to rich, influential Hollywood guys who got them on permanently. That always pissed me off. It was great to see someone from a current (meaning 70s) or 60s TV show be on the panel once in a while.

Used to watch this after school and loved it. A comedian (can't recall name) who used to occasionally appear on the show, was being interviewed once and claimed that after each taping, (5 shows/day), they would meet in the commissary and have drinks. He said, to the effect, "by the time Wednesday's show was on, we were bombed..." Today this would be scripted, but back then, the drinks took care of that. Love the ashtrays. Just like ma & pa's parties long ago. Everything today is so uptight.

I think you're right, to a point. I don't know if the panel game show would work these days, because the "personalities" are outrageous in a way that isn't funny like this was. The best that could possibly happen is that Match Game '10 would be trying to get Stewart, or Colbert, or Letterman, or Conan to do fifteen-second show segments at a time for each question.
