Same. I love MG but there’s always something missing when Richard isn’t there. Even in his later episodes where his interest is gone there’s just something more complete with his presence on this show. It’s like watching Hollywood Squares without Paul Lynde. It can be fun but there’s definitely something missing that just makes it classic.

Believe it or not, I met Pat Finley. She graduated from Olympia High School, Olympia WA, and I was on the school newspaper. She came back to town to do a show, and I interviewed her. What a bitch! No, I'm kidding, she was gracious and funny and wonderful, giving her time to some dumb high school kid. I loved her!

H/H match update: Orson Bean is back (100% accuracy in the H/H match so far). This is his 9th week on the show out of 16 total. He will appear on the next-to-last week prior to the show's cancellation in 1979. Joyce Bulifant is back (75% accuracy in the H/H match so far). This is her 12th week out of 38 total. Her final Match Game '7x appearance will be in episode 1430 in 1979. This is Pat Finley's one and only week on the MG stage. And we have our beloved regulars, of course. Who will the winning contestants choose this week? ...and we kick off the week much as we did the prior week. The returning champion chose Richard for the sixth time (quelle surprise), but this time they weren't on the same wavelength. (My first thought at hearing the question was "fifty cents", so I matched no one.) Even with this miss, Richard holds onto the slimmest of leads over Brett... Here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: Orson Bean - 100% (3 wins in 3 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Fannie - 50% (9 wins in 18 attempts). Betty - 48.4% (15 wins in 31 attempts). Charles - 47.4% (18 wins in 38 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Richard - 37.9% (108 wins in 285 attempts). Brett - 37.8% (17 wins in 45 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 526, excluding the lost/missing episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

Thanks. Really cool info. At what point did Richard get the reputation for being the best at the head to head and was it deserved or an illusion?
@kevansf Жыл бұрын
@@presto709 Interesting questions. Thanks for your comment. It's hard to say when Richard's rep really kicks into high gear. I'd say if not already, soon. By about episode 700-ish certainly. I'm up to 1147 as of today, and Richard has been chosen about 86% of the time over the past 85 weeks. Does he deserve his reputation? Not based on the stats. He remains in a virtual tie with Brett after all this time. She has actually spent more weeks ahead of him than vice versa, but they've traded places perhaps two dozen times. Richard remains well below everyone else (except Bert). One thing I've noticed is that a champion will stick with Richard even after 3, 4, or even 5 consecutive times not matching. Generally, after just one time of not matching they'll abandon any other celeb (and turn to Richard instead). Another thing I've noticed is that often when Richard scores a H/H match, people will comment about how he seems to be "psychic" and how he's the best (even though his cumulative matching score is lower than Brett's and everyone else's!). At the same time, when Brett is chosen and doesn't match, people often comment about how the contestant was stupid to choose her and deserved to lose the money "because Brett never matches." (Even if she had matched a slightly higher percentage of times than Richard at that point.) I'm looking forward to see how the numbers develop, especially once the Star Wheel is introduced and a greater variety of stars get to play more often.

@@kevansf You should write a paper on cognitive bias. People think Richard is the best so he gets a lot of credit when he's right but hardly any notice when he's wrong. Is there a playlist where I can watch all episodes in order? Is matchgame unique in not always ending a game and continuing to the next show? I'm sure it's due to the very loose format. It does make it frustrating to watch random shows. You seem to be an expert. What is your story?
@kevansf Жыл бұрын
@@presto709 You hit it on the head about MG being unique. I believe the secret to its success (and its lingering popularity) lies in the fact that it wasn't a strict game show. The game aspect often takes second stage to the fun/party aspect of the show. There were better, more exciting *games* out there (like Password or Pyramid), but I would never want to sit and watch them all again now, because it's just a lot of random people playing the game over and over. Not too exciting 40 or 50 years later. MG on the other hand is more about the stars - we feel like we get to know them over the years, like they're friends or family. I think that really kept people watching back in the 1970s and helps keep the show enjoyable today. MG Productions has some playlists. Or you can simply search in KZbin for "Match Game episode x" and save episodes into a watch later list which is easily arranged, and then delete episodes once you've seen them and add new ones gradually. I watched a few shows when I was a kid in the 1970s (I loved Brett and Charles even back then), and during the pandemic I watched a random show or two and quickly decided to go to the beginning and watch them all in order. After a few months I noticed how (most) everyone was raving about Richard and dissing Brett and I began to wonder what the real stats were, so I went back to the beginning and started keeping records of all the H/H matches (and gradually more info) and decided why not share it? Most people won't be interested, but I enjoy doing it, and it helps me slow down and enjoy the episodes more. I generally do one a day now.

@@kevansf You sound like me. Sometimes I get really into organizing something like for example getting all my Beatles albums including bootlegs organized in Itunes. I had to use a 3rd party program to edit all the tags with the correct dates etc. It can be tedious but rewarding in the end. I do like watching the old Passwords. Almost as much as a Match Game. They had their own more erudite comedy and great guests. My mm instilled in me a love of words. She's over 80 but we still play Scrabble on weekends and she usually wins. Thanks again for the stats. Did you ever notice that Bret obsessively tears up and folds her cards after showing them?

I think a lot of the contemporary distaste for Richard Dawson among those who didn't grow up during that era is mainly due to his touchy-feeling and now-questionable behavior on Family Feud, and I have to say looking back it is does come off as a bit cringeworthy. You really do have to go back to these Match Game episodes to really understand his appeal and his often-brilliant wit.

Richard Dawson was one of the greats from Hogan's Heroes back in the 1960s. He was a fan favorite then and it carried over to the 1970s. He was frustrated that he couldn't break out of the game show circuit, tried his hand at hosting a really awful game show but then got the Family Feud hosting job where he became the king - until Steve Harvey surpassed him in popularity many years later.
