the more one watches these matchgame shows the more one is impressed with gene rayborn's skill as a host. his interaction with the panelists, contestants, and audience are what makes the show.

@@donofon101 Strange reason to watch a show you know? Most would have stopped watching by now if they didn't like the show, I would and is probably why I have never watched the newer ver that is currently on tv. I guess the game you like to keep you watching. Believe it or not but Gene was for equal rights for women, blacks, gays and all colors of the rainbow.. And I still say Gene knew who he could and couldn't just from watching he did and didn't.. ;0)

He is so tuned in (and patient when needed) to the panelists and tv audience for the time. I only saw clips and thought he was smarmy (but he didn't write em). I was wrong. He's very kind in a hectic, spinning plates job.

@@donofon101 you might be surprised that i agree with you about rayburn's forced sexual advances. the man was married, i don't know how his wife dealt with it, i think they separated once during the show... but the guy was a predator in his own right, i remember one panelist (maybe elaine joyce) giving in and saying out loud, "but no tongue!" my comment about his talent as a host can be separated from his creepiness, also, there was a lot of drinking going on between shows, i'm sure that added to a lot of his "bravado."

The very best answer to the kinky piano player question was a synonym for "inebriated" that starts with the letter "p" and would have been censored immediately. The writers had to have known that, so were thay purposely pushing the envelope on that one? Pretty cool that cultured Bobby Van came up with "Liszt", though!

H/H match update: ... The new champion chose Richard. (Yes, I know, what a shock!) This means Richard has played 12 of the last 13 H/H matches (and now he's matched 5 of those 12 times). "Donald _________" They're just giving money away today! (Even Gene made a little joke about how easy that question was: "Who was buried in Grant's tomb?") (Remember, this was 1975, so one response that would come to mind today wouldn't have been thought of then.) Richard scores his 118th H/H match. Here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Fannie - 50% (9 wins in 18 attempts). Betty - 48.4% (15 wins in 31 attempts). Charles - 45.2% (19 wins in 42 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Richard - 38.9% (118 wins in 303 attempts). Brett - 38.3% (18 wins in 47 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 552, excluding the lost/missing episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

I saw the show with Helen and Gene Rayburn. They are a good match. Both are strong personalities and really enjoy each other's company. The only matched about 50 percent of the time but they seemed to really enjoy each others company. It was a good window into Gene's background.
