Contestants were so humble and genuine back then. Now everyone is a amateur performer vying for the spotlight. Then they talk about their families and where they’re from, now they brag about things like zip lining in Costa Rica.

At 13:43 , Gene mentions sorry we are giving away to the opposition CBS which aired the soap opera The Edge of Night until November of 1975. At this time when this Match Game episode aired, The Edge of Night had already moved to ABC in December 1975.
@libertubey21994 жыл бұрын
Though this is MG76, these were taped in advance. Judging from Gene and Brett's hairdo, these episodes may have been taped very late 1975, around the time that "Edge of Night" was leaving CBS for ABC.

H/H match update: ... Today's action: A new champion earns a trip to the Super Match round. Today's audience match question: "________ of Night" The celebs: Betty (Edge), Brett (Dead), and Marcia (Middle - after acknowledging the lack of the "the") The choice: Edge The answers: Dark, Dead, The Edge Our new champ gets off to a good start. Now who will he choose for the $5000 H/H match? I bet it won't be Richard, since he didn't even call on him for a suggestion. Instead, he called on the three women panelists. If I had to bet, I'd say he picks Betty, although from backstage he must have witnessed Brett's successful match two days ago... He does pick Betty. She's a good choice statistically, with a better track record than Richard or Brett, but not as good as Gary's (although Gary's data is limited to only 6 attempts). This is Betty's 33rd attempt at the head-to-head match - the last time she played was episode 555 (she didn't match that time), so it's been a while. Today's H/H question: " ________ Pass" I think this is a hard one. A lot of possibilities without a single standout. Hall pass, free pass... Betty looks off into the distance for a moment before coming up with an answer. Watching her write, it looked like at least 5 letters or so. The contestant has a big smile on his face, as if he's thought of the perfect answer. The contestant confidently answers "forward." It received a tepid response from the audience. I hadn't thought of that possibility. Betty did seem to have written a longish response (too long to be hall or free), but I kind of doubt she thought of forward. Betty looks glum. She may be acting, but it feels like she didn't match. OMG! That has got to be one of the top ten H/H match fake-outs of all time. Betty honestly seemed to be apologizing (reminding the audience that they didn't like the contestant's answer either) and even said she was "a baseball fan" (forward pass is a football term), and then she pulls out her card: Forward! Is the woman psychic? Betty scores her 16th H/H match today! This puts Betty back ahead of Charles and a bit behind Fannie as far as accuracy. For total number of wins, she's still #4, after Richard, Charles, and Brett. Here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Fannie - 52.6% (10 wins in 19 attempts). Betty - 48.5% (16 wins in 33 attempts). Charles - 47.7% (21 wins in 44 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Richard - 40.3% (147 wins in 365 attempts). Brett - 38.5% (20 wins in 52 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 643, excluding the lost/missing episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

Good grief, Brett's just joking around, and she was friends with Betty and Allen. One of the earlier episodes with Allen sitting in the #1 chair included a tender moment when he kissed Brett very sweetly on the lips. They clearly had affection for each other and he was well accustomed to (and not offended) by Brett's catty remarks.

@@proud_brettsomersfanclub8687You're not in charge. People can write whatever they want about about Brett chasing Jack Klugman off. Even after he got her all these side acting jobs. Neither were saints. It's well known they didn't live together for years before Klugman dumped her in 1977.

At 18:58 (after the contestant has given her answer), is it my imagination or does Ed Asner write a new answer, slip it into the slot above his old answer, which he then folds up and discards. It certainly looks like that’s what he did, but if he did, it was in front of Gene and on camera, so I’d be surprised if they’d let him get away with it. On the other hand, if that’s not what he did, what was he doing?
@garfield24392 жыл бұрын
Sure looks like he did but he still didn't match. Maybe he didn't want to

That really was weird! It did totally look like he changed his answer right in front of Gene, but who knows? If that's what happened, Gene wisely decidedly to address it off camera...

Nice fake out, Betty! I really thought she didn't have "forward pass." He's lucky he didn't go with Brett, who hates sports, and wouldn't know a forward pass from a hole in the ground. I also thought of "weekend pass," but I didn't think he was a military man.
