I’ve never seen that before where a contestant couldn’t come up with any answer at all. But in fairness to her it took Richard an awfully long time to write something down also.

H/H match update: ... Today's action: Three games was the limit for our reigning champion, but at least she matched in the head-to-head yesterday with Fannie before being defeated. She departs with a smile and $6,800. A brand-new champion takes her place beside Gene in center stage, with visions of winning "over $5,000." Today's audience match question: "Glen________ " (My thoughts: Canyon, Campbell?? -- Names, yuck) The celebs: Richard (Campbell), Patty (Ford), and Brett (Miller) The choice: Campbell The answers: Miller, Ford, Campbell -- The celebs got them all, and in the right order too! It seems pretty clear that our new champion is an enthusiastic member of the Richard Dawson fan club. Let's see... After one day off from his head-to-head duties, Richard finds himself back in play. In fact, he's played all but four of the past 35 H/H questions. And, he's matched five of his ten most recent attempts, so he's still on hot streak too. Today's H/H question: "_______ Cap" (A few good answers come to mind. Bottle cap. Baseball cap. Thinking cap. Salary cap. I'm going to say bottle cap because I remember collecting them as a kid.) It looks like the contestant doesn't have an immediate answer in mind. The camera cuts to Richard who likewise is pondering instead of writing. When he finally writes his answer, it looks like several letters, at least six. When Gene calls on the contestant, she's fidgeting and has no answer yet. Gene stalls with a lot of prattle, and shows her the card. She still doesn't have an answer. She's talking about cap guns. Gene sits down on the stage to give her a little extra time. She asks for a commercial. "I'm really sorry," she finally says, without giving an answer. Oh my gosh, I feel so bad for her. I've said it before several times, how difficult it must be to think up there in front of the cameras, the audience, the celebs, the lights... Wow. They finally sound the "time's up" buzzer. I've been watching every episode from the start and that has never happened before. Richard mentions "dunce" cap (yikes!) and Gene mentions "night" cap. (There really were a lot of possible answers.) Richard wrote "Baseball." No match today. Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Charles - 51.0% (27 wins in 53 attempts). TIE: Betty - 50.0% (18 wins in 36 attempts). TIE: Fannie - 50.0% (12 wins in 24 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Richard - 41.6% (195 wins in 469 attempts). Brett - 41.3% (26 wins in 63 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 782, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

It hits the perfect sweet-spot of having been edgy and experimental for its day, and yet is now locked in its time. I watched the Late Night With David Letterman Anniversary Special from whichever year that he did it at Radio City (I think it was his eighth) and it strummed that same chord in me so effectively that it choked me up a little. Here's totally-dark-edgy-Dave, proving to us how dark and edgy he was by having three boarder collies herd a bunch of sheep into a taxi cab.
