H/H match update: ... Today's action: Our champion needed four broken scales to tie the game, so when Richard revealed "Ate," it was all over, and after four victories, our now ex-champion was dispatched with a decent $6,900. (My thought for the question was "ate" too, but I thought "broke" was the better answer.) Today's (first) audience match question: "Earl ________ " (My thoughts: Grey, the Pearl, Warren -- Another darned "name" question!) The celebs: Richard (the Pearl), Greg (Butz), Charles (Hines) -- This is why I don't like the name questions -- it's tough to remember who was well-known nearly half a century ago: Earl Butz was Agriculture Secretary in the Nixon administration, and Earl Hines was a jazz pianist and bandleader. The choice: Butz (wow) The answers: Butz, the Pearl, Holliman Time for our new champion to make her all-important selection. She chose Richard for the first suggestion, but didn't take his answer. I'm wondering if she'll be tempted to choose Greg based on the idea that they seem to think alike (which didn't work out too well for the audience match, but would be ideal in the H/H). Or, like most before her, will she pick Richard? No hesitation. It's Richard. Okay. This is his sixth consecutive H/H question (he's matched one so far). Of his 27 most recent attempts, he's scored 7 matches. (25.9%) Today's (first) H/H question: "_______ and cream" (Hmm. "Cream and sugar" sounds good, but not "sugar and cream." How about cookies and cream? I'm tempted just to say sugar anyway.) (That new think music is annoying.) Richard raises his eyebrows after Gene reads the question, but he gets right to work and finishes his response in about three seconds flat. The contestant says "Peaches." That's it! That's the definitive answer I couldn't think of! Brava, new champion lady! Let's hope Richard's brain worked better than mine did. The audience gives a warm response. Richard's reaction seems to indicate he didn't match. But I've been fooled before. Richard immediately reveals his "Sugar." Wow. I've been watching Richard play too many H/H matches; I'm starting to match him too much, even with answers that don't really make a lot of sense, like this one. This is definitely one occasion where the contestant deserved to win and the celebrity picked an inferior answer. No match today. ~~~ An unusually speedy game brings our champion back to the Super-Match for her second go. Today's (second) audience match question: "Clam ________ " (My thoughts: Bake, Dip, Up) The celebs: Brett (Chowder), Fannie (Bake), Richard (Shell) The choice: Chowder The answers: Shell, Bake, Chowder Interesting that our champion mixed it up a little bit by asking (mostly) different celebs for suggestions this time. I'm curious if she'll also try a different celeb for the H/H match as well. Maybe Brett? Well, we'll have to be patient and wait until tomorrow. Stay tuned! Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Charles - 50.0% (27 wins in 54 attempts). TIE: Betty - 50.0% (18 wins in 36 attempts). TIE: Fannie - 50.0% (13 wins in 26 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Richard - 40.9% (202 wins in 494 attempts). Brett - 40.0% (26 wins in 65 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 812, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

For the honeymoon horse question, I wonder if "Bucked" would have been acceptable in 1976. Ih has the double meaning of the obvious rhyming word, but it also is close in meaning to Richard's answer: "Neighed."

Damn, I just love Fannie Flagg! It's funny, because if Patti Deautch had given that answer, "husband," I would have been annoyed. I mean, like the contestant is ever gonna say that. But for some reason, when Fanni does it, it's funny. And she was a successful writer as well. She might be my favorite in that spot, despite her Confederate flag lapses. I don't think she's racist at all. She's just... a proud Southerner.

I looked it up and a found a few other movie sequels prior to 1976. There was French Connection II, Walking Tall 2, Airport '75 and Return Of The Pink Panther. So it's possible the writers had this in mind for a "definitive answer."
