This crowd had no idea what they were seeing. Rob was so nervous, this was probably close to, if not the first time he'd played in NYC. As a touring Musician from a semi-rural area who has been in this situation, NYC feels like it's going to chew you up and spit you out and forget you ever existed; and it's done just that to countless creatives. This band was special though. They had just enough of the 90s sound to be considered a 90s pop-rock band, but their live show then showed that they were much heavier than they were portrayed on record, and pulled more influence from the Seattle scene than it seemed. Rob was super unique in his writing and melody but especially delivery. He didn't need to rhyme for his stanzas to sound complete, which is super difficult. Cheers MB20, still an inspiration almost 25 years later.

This was a really good show. And Rob a bit younger but he still could really belt out those tunes. This is before he met Marisol. It's like it's was yesterday that I saw this. Higher voice here and I hope that I will always be happy and well and that I will always love you my sweet 😋 ❤ ♥ Only 25 at this time. Way to go Rob you can still do this today and I love you always so very much ❤ I hope that you will always enjoy your life and career and your love for your fans and your friends. Been following since 1996. You are the best thing that you can do for me and I'll try to make you feel so

Their first album dropped the year I was born and my mom was a super fan so naturally I am too now. This band is on a whole different level in my opinion and I am so grateful that they wrote such beautiful songs. Soundtrack of my childhood and up until right now. I get to see Rob Thomas live in a couple weeks and wow I'm just going to cry like a baby seeing my idol performing in front of me. Also his sweater is so cute!

This album help me through some very hard times. MB 20 music is still my comfort food in 2019. Myself being a born & bred Southerner, I think it's sad Rob has almost completely lost his Southern accent since moving to New York. He is one of the most talented singer songwriters ever and seems to continue to get better with every album!! Looking forward to a MB 20 tour in the year 2020 🍾🥂💖
@kierancostello21054 жыл бұрын
I do kinda agree...but he trained it out of himself. He cleaned up his voice with a voice coach (for his singing voice) - I think these songs did do a number on his voice in general. But these grungier songs are my favorite.

Its 3:02am, I can say I'm the biggest Matchbox Twenty fan ever, but I'm pretty sure so many others would fight me for that title. Whoever posted this, thank you so so much. I've been a fan from day 1, 1995. I seen them in Knoxville, TN in 1997, this was EXACTLY what I seen!! Busted, with the CB radio was the first song and I was mesmerized and freaking out. My son was 2 years old, I got his first babysitter, other than daycare,for him so I could go. When the gates opened I ran so fast to front and center. I didn't know Rob and I were the same age, to me he was such a star, an inspiration with his songs, my therapist when i didn't even know what a therapist was. My son is almost 30 now, last year i told him I was going to see Matchbox where I live in Florida. He told me his job was giving away free tickets so he entered to win, this was in Missouri. He calls to tell me he won and was going. I told him to listen to their new CD, so he did and he said every song made him feel good. My thoughts as well. Him and his girlfriend got to see them first, he called and told me he knew every song.. well of course he did, he was born hearing me playing them in the car and our house everyday. I went to see them a few weeks later, it was like I got to see them with my son, even though we are 17 hours apart. I seen them again in Fort Myers a couple months later too, they are still so amazing! Im venting right now because this video has tugged at my heart ❤️ Im watching it for the second time now. I was a single mom since the day my son was born. Matchbox Twenty filled a void in my life and could cheer me up, make me happy, make me cry, soothe my mood no matter how I felt. I never felt I would ever find a father figure good enough to be with for me and my son, so I stayed single and worked hard. I was the runaway bride, engaged several times but afraid to commit. Long story short, Matchbox Twenty was the only solid, stable, and therapeutic thing I had. This video puts me back in those days, keeping me strong, not settling for just anyone. I LOVE them all! Also every CD they've made, and every CD Rob Thomas has made. He is the most talented songwriter/front man, musician ever. He will always be my heart. I love his life, his wife, son, Sidewalk Angels... everything. If you are lucky enough to see him, tell him there is a fan in Florida that says thank you so much! These memories tonight have made me so happy. I needed to find this person, me, the 25 year old, tough, independent woman i was. Don't worry, hubby knows I stalk Rob Thomas, its a running joke around our home. 😄 😂 He's a fan too, has to be, only Matchbox CDs play in our car and most of the time in the house. This is marked a beautiful day, finding this gem. @35:00 watching this version of Busted, dang... took me back in time! ❤❤ Thank you!❤

Its sad that he was just kind of left at some point. And he seems to have nothing but positive things to say. I know Adam is a good bit older than the rest of the band and its possible he was just tired of touring.

If I were there that night that audience would have been jammin. I hope in this recording they turned the background noise down. Maybe it was a bunch of old fuddies at the birthday bash who don't appreciate good music. Rob Thomas writes beautiful music. I appreciate you!!!Love you guys.

New original music takes a little while to grow on people. It is why so many original bands struggle and ultimately give up. People are fickle and they don't connect easily or readily to music they do not know. I saw them in Feb 1997...probably around the same time this video was recorded. I saw them at this mid-sized club in Allentown, PA. It cost me $.95 (cents) cover to get in. I heard "Long Day" on the radio and dug it, so I wanted to check them out. It was a mid-week show and it had snowed that evening, so there were maybe 50-100 people in the place that probably could hold 400. A friend's band opened for them and then a band called the Guffs who was on tour with them played. I go into the men's room between my friend's band's set and the Guff's set. There are 4 dude's in the men's room just hanging out. One is wearing the most mismatched outfit I have ever seen (Red tuxedo shirt with frilly collar, black pants, and light brown slip-on, old man loafers). I have no idea who they are...I'm thinking a couple of local townies from Allentown. About a half-hour later, Matchbox takes the stage, and it is the four dudes from the bathroom. It seems I was rippin' a 1 in the men's room with Adam Gaynor, Brian Yale, Paul Doucette...and the guy in the red shirt... Rob Thomas. I stood within a few feet of the stage for their whole set..literally at Kyle's feet..I'm a guitar player...About month later "Push" was released and their rocket ride to the celebrity we all now know them to be took off.

It’s funny to think this audience was hearing these songs for the first time. Or most of them. It’s great to see them in their early days like this.

Wow. I thought I had seen matchbox 20 way back in the day when I saw them in 98 in Knoxville with Cool for August at an auditorium with fold out chairs and held maybe 800 but this is crazy old. This crowd is obviously not there for just mb20. It's some kind of charity event or comped event for radio people or something. they sound absolutely perfect with the most basic audio mix ever. they are the opening act. I really wonder who the two bands they "opened" for were. Oh and any live version of busted is priceless. What a find. How did I miss this on youtube for 2:years? It must have been buried in the algorithm.

They KILL this set, but the fact that they’re opening and don’t seem to have much fan fair leads me to believe this is mid-1996 and not 1997, because their album came out in October 96 so but his point they would have not been so seemingly unknown by the crowd
