In my opinion, Mary Wickes' answer to the lion tamer question is one of the most memorable Match Game answers ever. I would give this episode a gold star for that answer alone (and for Richard's and Joyce's reactions)!

7:39 The audience reacted to Mary’s clever (albeit suggestive) answer with more shaming shock, gasps, and disapproval than laughter. But give them infantile potty humor like “tinkle”, “boobs”, and “fannie”, and they’re falling out of their seats, unable to contain themselves. America in a nutshell.

End-of-week H/H match recap: ... ~~~Today's action: Our champion's "cup" runneth over when it comes to the panel's answers to the tie breaker, and so she returns to the Super Match for her sophomore attempt at "over five thousand dollars." Today's audience match question: "The Three _________" (My thoughts: Bears, Musketeers, Blind Mice) The celebs: Joey (Bears), Charles (Little Pigs), and Brett (Sisters) The choice: Musketeers The answers: Stooges, Bears, Musketeers Our champ goes it alone and scores the top answer on the board! Last time she called on Richard for the H/H, but they didn't match. This time??? (It would be great if they did let Earl play the H/H!) Richard redux. He's matched three of his ten most recent attempts. Today's H/H question: "Sweat _______" (Yikes. The first thing that came to my mind was "Sweat hogs," which isn't too weird considering "sweathog" actor Ron Pallilo was recently on the panel (706-710), and the show ("Welcome Back, Kotter") was popular at the time. But, I think it may be too quirky a response. The trouble is, I can't think of a super-generic answer. Sweat stains? Sweat band? I give up. I'll just say sweat hogs and roll the video...) Richard writes quickly, and it looks like his answer has too many letters to be "hogs." He glances at Joyce as he files his card. Back to the champion. "Shirt," she says. Now that I hear it, it sounds obvious. I'm hoping she matches today, and it sounds like she has a good chance! ... Oh, wow! The audience only gives a lukewarm response to "shirt," and when Gene asks what they would say, "hog/s" seems to be the overwhelming answer! So maybe I wasn't so far off after all. Still, I think our champion has a better chance of matching Richard with "shirt." Let's see... It's "Shirt"! Richard scores his 180th H/H match today. ~~~ End-of-week H/H match recap: An ordinary week when it comes to the number of H/H rounds - 5 - but only two matches this time: Brett 1/3, Richard 1/2 Brett played two weeks in a row, and with two consecutive contestants, and matched with each of them, so a noteworthy achievement in her H/H stats, and she ends the week holding a respectable full-percentage-point lead over Richard in the H/H accuracy department. Speaking of Richard, his accuracy score has been hovering around 41% for weeks and weeks now, and I'm wondering if we've gotten to the point that he's played so much that his score will basically stop fluctuating (in other words, his stats have matured to the point that additional data won't significantly affect the result). Looking back over many weeks, it seems pretty typical of him to match 2 out of 5 times a week, which is 40%, so I don't see him suddenly moving higher, unless the H/H questions become simpler in the future. Looking at the remainder of the panel, by sitting out this week, Charles obviously maintains his (roughly) 10-percentage-point lead over his two co-regulars. Joey Bishop completed his third week (leaving 2 to go). Still no H/H action for him, although I have to say he's beginning to feel more like part of the panel, and has been called on for audience match suggestions a few times now. He's also matching a lot in the regular game. Mary Wickes ends her debut week already feeling like an old friend. She really gels with the panel and with Gene and with the whole vibe of the show, and her quirkiness doesn't interfere with her good game playing. No head-to-head experience yet, but she did get her first call to contribute a suggestion for the audience match. I can't wait to see her again. ~~~Looking ahead to next week, our three regulars will be joined by: -----Semi-regular Fannie Flagg, back after a 3-week "vacation." This will be her 42nd week (of 90). She retains a slight edge over Charles for the highest H/H accuracy rate of next week's panelists. -----Bill Daily, returning for his 5th week (of 15). He last visited in episodes 631-635 and he's matched in 2 out of 3 head-to-head questions - one more match and he moves up to the big leader board! (And yes, I realize that his accuracy score of 66.7% is technically higher than Fannie's, but I don't count scores based on fewer than 3 matches.) -----Rounding out the panel, we have the Match Game debut and farewell of Bennye Gatteys, another one-week-only celebrity guest panelist. ~~~Finally, here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Fannie - 52.4% (11 wins in 21 attempts). Charles - 51.0% (27 wins in 53 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (18 wins in 36 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 41.9% (26 wins in 62 attempts). Richard - 40.9% (180 wins in 440 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 750, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

I'm not sure what the writers were after on the "pirate" question. The new pirate's dog is "weird," but none of those things are strange for a dog to do, bury it, tinkle on it, chew it. "Saw" would certainly be weird, as most dogs can't operate hand tools, but it didn't match. Lousy question, guys.

Kind of a slow week this week but Richard pulled it out at the last moment to keep his title giving away 5,000 dollars in a head to head match for the regulars. Brett won with 12 matches and giving away 2,500 dollars in a head to head and audience match match for the regulars.
