I wish to God I could go back to 1978 and be watching this with my mum and dad again. cherish your loved ones now because before you know if they'll be gone. tell your children every day that you love them, and leave them in no doubt no one is loved more than they are. because you will be next. The thing I love about L.S. Lowry is he kept on doing what he loved. He certainly didn't let Southerners dictate terms. Lowry's success gave countless Northern Artists of all kinds 'permission' to take no notice of the posh Art World, and go for it anyway.

He painted Salford's smokey tops On cardboard boxes from the shops And parts of ancoats where I used to play I'm sure he once walked down our street 'Cause he painted kids who had nowt on their feet The clothes we wore had all seen better days Now they said his works of art were dull No room all round, the walls are full But Lowry didn't care much anyway They said he just paints cats and dogs And matchstalk men in boots and clogs And Lowry said that's just the way they'll stay And he painted matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs He painted kids on the corner of the street that were sparking clogs Now he takes his brush and he waits Outside them factory gates To paint his matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs Now canvas and brushes were wearing thin When London started calling him To come on down and wear the old flat cap They said tell us all about your ways And all about them Salford days Is it true you're just an ordinary chap? And he painted matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs He painted kids on the corner of the street that were sparking clogs Now he takes his brush and he waits Outside them factory gates To paint his matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs Now Lowry's hang upon the wall Beside the greatest of them all And even the Mona Lisa takes a bow This tired old man with hair like snow Told northern folk it's time to go The fever came and the good lord mopped his brow And he left us matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs He left us kids on the corner of the street that were sparking clogs Now he takes his brush and he waits Outside them pearly gates To paint his matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs And he left us matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs He left us kids on the corner of the street that were sparking clogs Now he takes his brush and he waits Outside them pearly gates To paint his matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs And he left us matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs He left us kids on the corner of the street that were sparking clogs Now he takes his brush and he waits Outside them pearly gates To paint his matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs And he left us matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs He left us kids on the corner of the street that were sparking clogs Now he takes his brush and he waits Outside them pearly gates To paint his matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs

I remember watching this on Top of the Pops as an eight year old, not having a clue what the song was about but loving the tune and melody and then it became popular with our school in Plymouth Devon and so our teachers then educated us on the Artist L.S.Lowry and his significance. Wonderful song. I've been in awe of it ever since I heard it on the BBC. You may not know, but in Russia there is such a genre - the author's song. Music is not so important, poetry means more. It is usually sung with a guitar. This is a real Russian author's song. In English. Okudzhava is higher, but here the level is absolutely incredible.

You should check out an artist called Ren, his story telling and guitar are phenomenal but he switches genre so he also has rap songs but for an amazing story told while doing amazing things with a classical guitar I recommend you start with The tale of Jenny & Screech. Just played this to my 16 y/o daughter… it made me cry! I was eight when this was released and I watched it on TOTP and sang it in the streets with my friends… I moved from Salford when I was 18, now they may say you can take the girl out of Salford, but you can’t take Salford out of the girl! A 1,001 memories came back from my childhood and playing on ‘bomb sites’ and ‘crofts’! Making Sloopy-do-dah from mud and wrapping it up in discarded plastic trays from the chippy, then wrapping it up in yesterday day’s newspaper! Going to find wood for the ‘bonnie’; making the best guy (using our mams American tan tights 🙈 for his head) and getting to all the best puds first at just the right time and asking ‘hey mister, got a penny for our guy’?… We’d go off and buy sweets and chocolate with the money we’d made … Best time of our lives our childhood’s and we don’t even know it, nor believed it when anyone said so… now approaching mid 50’s, I’d definitely say… stay young no matter your age! 🥰

I could have sworn this came out in '77. Left Lancs Dec 1977. Love this song. Might be Manchester which was once LANCASHIRE!

Yes, you are quite right, the record was released on November 25th 1977, but didn't make the charts until the end of February 1978.
