As an ex-tour caddy, Cavendish's histrionics, while not nice, are par for the course for many, (though by no means all), professional sportspeople. Let's face it, to be at the top of your sport requires incredible selfishness and desire, and an insatiable need to win. They get very stressed, and need to vent. Most importantly there is a psychological need to blame anyone but themselves. It keeps them mentally strong. As a caddy you have to deal with a lot of crap, bike mechanics will be the same.

Mohoric is probably too young to grok the implications of that gesture. He's grown up in a pro cycling system that's very jaded and cynical after the LA era. I recall some older cyclists who as recently as 2012 were still in denial about how extensive doping was. Younger cyclists never enjoyed the luxury of that kind of naivete. The zipped-lip gesture reads like someone using a meme incorrectly, nothing sinister. Cool to see that Pogacar kid taking on the patron role. We haven't had one of those for awhile. After anti doping raids in the past, now, when all clean, we see the power of Slovenian sportsmen. Till the big pharma science was in, Slovenians had no chance. Now, Slovenes can shine. It is pity to be suspected just becouse they are strong, willing to fight, and smart. Roglič is in Jumbo, Mohorič in Bahrain, Pogi is in UAE. To connect three men in three teams is a bit sci-fi.

Here is what happened: Bahrain Victorious were raided by the police. Mohoric won the stage. He made a gesture that meant: “Look at us, we have nothing to hide, we just are that good!” Had nothing to do with the past! Fuck Armstrong and his Omertà. You remember Georg Bennet post Giro interview, when Froome did his long solo to ride into pink (which ultimately worked because Pinot convinced Doumulin to wait for Reichenbach, but that’s another story). “Huh, he pulled a Landis.” Honestly, I am surprised Brailsford did not sue him into oblivion.

Doping control does seem to be a bit overbearing if they're going through guys photos and messages without them getting popped by a test. I know the first thing I'd do if I was doping is take photos of me doing it...
@jonoharper47293 жыл бұрын
It wasn't doping control searching, it was the police, therefore they had authority to search everything. But it seems the manner was aggressive and unfriendly. They should do better in their approach and handle the situation in a humane way, imo.

The French Police need to be reminded of the Gestapo's methods in France during the early 1940s... Pitiful. The peleton gets tested all the time and riders are now held to the most stringent of standards. Let these boys race without the added BS. Thanks for the great breakdown, once again LR :)

I agree. Seems the complaint is rooted in a rider that isn't even at the TDF. If their blood is clean, then leave them alone until the end or at least until right after Stage 20.

If Cav wanted a shot at the sprint finish, why did they never show up at the front to control or pull back the small break? So odd. They put 1 guy in a break of 26 … with a goal of what?

That move by Pog' really disappointed me. The guys want to ride, let them ride. He ain't no patron of the peloton, if he was, they would never have made that move.

If he's not doping then power to him to be honest, he has a right to be mad at people thinking he is doping. And if he's doping then my bigger problem is he is doping rather than a fucking celebration lol

Mohoric is in the clear. The gesture is a storm in a teacup. Van Aert on the other hand? Guys as heavy as him aren't supposed to win on stages with double ascents of Mont Ventoux. I'm comfortable accepting Big Mig had some help back in the day.... consider his size and weight and who he was competing with, and the era in which he was competing. But if I'm happy accepting that about Big Mig, when we fast forward 25 years and those same circumstances are repeating themselves? I'm dubious, and with good reason.

Dumb move of Mohoric. He went against system without proper reason. What he suggest? That police stop to hunt for doping? No? What then? In such cases, system may take him for sample and regularly check him.

I'm stunned by the reaction of BV. I get that a lot of the riders are too young to have remembered Armstrong's era, but get fucking educated. Know about the recent history of your sport (and your bosses). I don't know why some PR person hasn't briefed the riders and told them (assuming they are clean), just say something like 'It's a difficult situation but we understand why it's necessary... It's a shame for us that there is suspicion due to the actions of those in the past, but we are following the rules... We'll continue to race and prepare the way we always do and hopefully in the future there will no longer be suspicion thanks to clean teams like ours...' But instead it's shut-your-mouths gestures and talk of 'jealousy'. Just a really bad look for pro cycling in general. I also don't understand how people involved in doping in the past are allowed to have jobs on World Tour teams. All the time people like that are in the sport fans are going to be, rightly, skeptical about teams being clean.
